Cathedral golf wins district title
Published Thursday, April 24, 2008
The Cathedral golf team is, from left, coach John Wright, Aaron Sandifer, Trevor Farmer, assistant coach Gary Farmer, Steve Scarborough, Avery Middleton and Eliot McCann.
NATCHEZ — Led by the outstanding play of Steve Scarborough, the Cathedral golf team blew away the competition at the Region 7-1A golf tournament at Beau Pré Country Club.
Scarborough shot a 79, which was the best individual score by far, and the Green Wave had a team score of 385 to defeat Puckett by 18 strokes.
“We worked well as a team,” Cathedral coach John Wright said. “A lot of these guys have played together for a while and they got the job done today.”
But the most impressive performance was that of Scarborough, who is just a freshman.
“He is a great young player,” Wright said. “He’s put a lot of hard work and time into his game. He’s been playing with the team since the seventh grade. He’ll be a great player for years to come.”
In addition to Scarborough’s 79, Elliot McCann shot an 88 while Avery Middleton shot 99 and Aaron Sandifer shot a 119 to pace the Wave.
“As a whole they did pretty good,” Wright said. “They had a few iffy holes. But they kept their minds in the game and stayed focused.”
With the win, Cathedral now advances to the State Tournament May 15 and 16 at Bay Point Country Club in Brandon.
