Wood receives three life sentences
Published Wednesday, April 30, 2008
VIDALIA — Convicted teen triple-murderer Connor Wood was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences in Seventh District Judicial Court Wednesday.
The condition of the mandatory sentences handed down by Judge Leo Boothe is that they do not come with the possibility of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.
Wood was convicted April 16 by a Concordia Parish Jury for the March 14, 2007 death of his parents, John and Geraldine Wood, and 16-year-old neighbor Matthew Whittington.
Wood, who will be 17 in July, was 15 at the time of the murders.

I would assume Angola. At least to start off with.

This is very sad this boy must be ill, to have killed his parents and his best friend! Should he go to jail or a hospital?

I would think they would send him to a juvenile facility until he turns 17 (which is adult age in LA) if not then when he turns 18...

Thank GOD! Glad he won't be walking the street free.

Waterbourne & Natchez500 - What are you talking about with the Adams Co courts. Jeff Havard was sentenced to death by the Adams county court for killing that 6 month old. This Wood guy didn't get the death penalty, does that mean Concordia should take a lesson from Adams? Different trials have different verdicts, doesn't matter if in Adams or Concordia.
Posted by firered (anonymous) on April 30, 2008 at 1:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)
well, Wood wasn't eligible for the death penalty because he was a juvenile when the murders occured. Adams county doesn't really have a tendency to sentence people according to their crimes. The Havard case, yes, that was justice... but thats 1 out of how many?

Why so much generalities? Some of you are never satisfied with anything about Mississippi, Adams County or Natchez. Get a grip. All crimes do not have to be life or death, or forever in jail. Jail is not always the answer to all the problems and there is already over crowding. I believe in community service hours where applicable. And if Concordia was always so great -- they let a "trustee" escape. Where are you comments about that?
I am glad to see this young man off the streets. If he killed once he would be bound to do it again. It is sad his life is ending in jail but what about the parents who loved him and cared for him up until age 15? They are no longer with us and the young Whittington boy doesn't have the opportunity to grow up and get married and have a family of his own. This boy is a murderer regardless of his age. And, don't hand me this hospital stuff. He does not belong in a mental institution; he belongs in JAIL.

Mike, I don't mean to get off subject, but when is Havard set to be put to death, do you know? I sometimes feel on the fence when it comes to the death penalty, but NOT with that animal. I think I could kill him myself!

He does not belong in a hospital. He belongs in prison. I heard that he was thinking that he would not get life and would be able to get out in 20-30 yrs. Yea, right!

i served on the Havard case and still think death is to good for what he done to that baby. What were the reasons they could not go for death in this case? I know with Haverd we could only give it to him becase he was charged with rape and murder.

As a member of Maddy's (baby killed by Havard) family I would like to thank all of you for remembering her. It is good to know that people will not tolerate this kind of behavior. I live in Concordia Parish and I want to ask all of you to pray for the families of these violent crimes, and for the ones that don't make the papers. May God grant you Peace.

I believe it has been said he wasnt able to get the death penalty being as he was only 15 (a juvenile) at the time of the murders. So we pay for his stay for life in the pen, getting 3 free meals a day and a place to lay his head...... He will grow old there, so it will be the only life he will eventually remember........

Great job to the DA (Brad) for pushing for the sentence that he got and to Judge Boothe for handing down the mandatory sentence. I pray that this is now closure and a step in healing for all of the family and friends. I agree a hospital is not where he needs to be, maybe treatment while in prison!
Concordia Parish is a great place 'lambchop'! So they had a roll model inmate to escape, temptation pulled him in a direction that is going to keep him from being free. But, please don't down this side of the river. We really have a growing community here that many people from Natchez are moving to or bringing their children over here to go to school. I was raised in Vidalia, then moved to Natchez for about a yr. I hated it -- so moved back! So, we have some fault in out law enforcement -- who don't!

to norris_05,
God bless your family. I can only imagine the horror you all went through. I have a little girl that was almost the same age as Maddy at the time, so it really struck a nerve with me. I will ALWAYS remember your little angel. I cried many tears when I heard about it.
I do hope that you and your family have been able to find some type of peace. I wish you well, and again...God be with you all.

He didn't get the death penalty because they charged him with 2nd degree murder...which only carries a life sentence. 1st degree would have carried the death sentence. Jeff Havard is still awaiting the fulfillment of his death sentence...he appealled on the basis that lethal injection was inhumane. Haven't heard what the courts have decided in Ms. on that one.

He should FRY since he doesn't want the lethal injection (Havard). ((norris-05))Maddy is still in the minds and hearts of many of us. May God rest her little soul.

Life without the possibility of probation, suspension or parole is the ONLY SENTENCE for second degree murder.

thetruthhurts, Connor won't have a long life in prison I'm sure, depends on where he is sent to, that it will be a short lived life. I really can't see that little worm living to be an old man inside the "big house."

again he didn't get death because of the age he was when he commited the murders. it doesn't matter what he was charged with. even if the death was a choice he couldn't get it because of that reason.

he could have gotten the death penalty if he was tried as an adult...regardless of his age.
Posted by DrunkenMonkey (anonymous) on April 30, 2008 at 4:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)
He couldn't have gotten the death penalty because he was tried for second-degree murder, not first-degree.
And he was tried as an adult.

Best news I've heard in a while!!!!!
((noneya)) I thought he was tried as an adult.
I am very pleased with his sentense, but I still think he should get execution.
He will have the time of his life being everyone's "play toy"
Maybe it will have an ending like Jeffrey Daumer & the inmate saving the tax payers some money.

As far as the question about why didn't he get the death penalty, He didn't get the death penalty because he could not legally be given the death penalty in the state of Louisiana because of the fact that he was a juvenile at the time. And Yes, He was tried as an adult. The law in Louisiana allowed them to try him as an adult but would not allow them to give him the death penalty, not because of his charge, but because even though he was being charged as and adult, he was a juvenile. I didn't matter if they charged him with second degree murder or assassinating the President, at that age he could not legally be given the death penalty. And yes, he will more than likely end up in Angola or somewhere's just as bad. Angola has a few 15 and 16 year's there. They just keep them seperated from the general population until they turn 17 or 18 years old, then they put them in general population with everyone else. And you would be surprised as to the ones who make it in prison. I have seen some of the smallest guys you ever seen manage to survive prison life and I have also seen some of the biggest ones not last a month. Prison is a test on your mind. It's more about whether you are mentally fit or not instead of how big you are. No doubt in my mind that within a few months this boy will be involved in a prison house gang and then his odds of survival are better because he has protection. And as far as the inmate that escaped from over here, I bet you can name me one county, or parish that has not has an inmate escape from it at one point and time. Just because an inmate escaped from a jail or prison doesn't mean that that place doesn't know what they are doing. The guy escaped because he had just got news of his girlfriend getting beat up and it stressed him out enough to escape. But you can beat that they will catch him.

An earlier article says he was compenent to stand trial as an adult.
http://www.natchezdemocrat.com/news/2007...
This animal knew exactly what he was doing, but thought because at the time he was 15 he would get a slap on the wrist and a little therapy. LOL
Now he will have a lifetime of hard prison (if someone doesn't taken him out) to think about it.
If they try to appeal it we as concerned citizens should get petition signed. We should protect our children for this sicko.

Connor was shipped today to Wade Correctional Facility in Homer, La. where he will reside until he is 17, and then be shipped to Angola to finish serving his sentences. I wonder what he thought of that? Did he show any emotion after hearing that he will spend the rest of his life at Angola? I sure would like to ask him myself.

We lost a daughter ,Jeri,Anephew,John, Hudson a nephew that may NEVER Get over this, AND yes we have lost Conner for the rest of his life.
YES he was involved in all of this But He was not the ONLY ONE!!! The investgator said on the stand that ,after all the investagion was done he said Matt was also involved. I don'twant to say that the Wittingtons gave not suffered a HORRIBLE LOSS IN MATHEWS DEATH BUT WE are also suffering a GREATLOSS that I think we will live with for a long time. Also I am sorry that my nephew was responcible for his death. I just wish EVERBODY on here could respect all of our losses.

I'm concerned about both families. I pray for them in their losses. But I'm glad this killer is off the streets.
I've heard many stories about the goings on in prisons especially angola so I'm concerned about Conner's well-being. He has a punishment of prison for the rest of his life, which he deserves, but he does not deserve to be raped by fellow inmates.
Again, to both families, I can't even imagine what you are going through.

In the state of La, a person under the age of 16 cannot be given a death sentence even if they are tried as an adult. Woods will probably be at a juivy prison until age 21 then transfered to an adult prison.

I'm not sure what you're referring to that was downright embarassing. If it was my spelling or grammar, you are right. I have had 3 strokes, and I type with one finger. If it's anything else, let me know. As for me not being online, you ain't seen nothing yet.

I think you are screaming at the wrong crowd. If you are looking for sympathy for a murderer. If you are really so upset for Conner and his feelings. Maybe you should grieve in silence. And think about the 3 that were lost. A jail sentence for one does not out way the death of 3. So you can get as mad as you want to. But it want change peoples opinion of this masacre.

I don't think that truthseeker was trying to get sympathy for Connor, but just trying to make a point that they are in pain too. All families are hurting & in pain. Truthseeker is not saying that Connor in innocent just that he wasn't alone. Noone will ever know exactly what happened, but the way the evidence looked...well. Connor is going to get what he deserves. We all know that. I just pray for all the families involved.

Dear bear30 Thank you. You seem to be the only one that under stood what I was trying to say. John was my nephew and jerr was my niece through marriage. John was a wonderful man and Jeri was my Angel I was closser to her than I was to any of the rest of the my family. As far as thinking about them, there is not a day that goes by that I don't have a good cry lver missing them. But on the other i am not capable of hating after loving him since he was a baby..I just wanted a fair trial and all the facts to come out,and I don't think t hat it happened!! This has split so many families members apart. Thank you for understanding!!

My thoughts and prayers do go out for all the family members involved in such a horrific crime. However, I do honestly believe Connor got a fair sentence. Not so long ago one of my own family members, Allen Cupstid, was murdered right here in Concordia parish. The men who murdered him are also serving life sentences thanks to our courts. I do somewhat feel a glimmer of sorrow for Connor because he is so young, but in the same breath I am thankful that he will pay for what he did.
Posted by Lily_Dream (anonymous) on May 1, 2008 at 7:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I am sure that it is in Connor's mind over and over, his actions and the consequences. I feel strongly that there was something there that lead this young man to such insensitive actions. Many lives are affected by this tragedy. I feel for the young man. Are we that cold and evil-twisted in the mind that we can sit back and hope the worst for someone. No matter what the crime, this is a young man who is gone from society forever. This is a young man whom I am sure everyday wishes he could pick up the phone and call his parents. He knows he can't because he killed them. But at the same time, it is wrong to speak such hatred at him. One can look at his face and see that he had some serious mental issues. This appears to be a young man who was spoiled as a child. I am not at all saying that he was justified in what he did. Heaven forbid, give him a stiff jail sentence. But do we as a society of people have to rejoice? This is a young man who has divided many families, including his own. No one can imagine what is going on in his mind right now. Prison Wardens are now his Mother and Father. Have we lost sight of the fact that there are people who love him? Do we not care that the rest of his family is suffering because some want to support him, and some have turned their backs on him? Folks, I gotta tell ya', it is not a good feeling living in this world alone.
For some of you who are shouting all the insanities towards this young man, how will you react if a 15 y.o in your family snapped and went on a killing spree? Are you going to wish the death penalty or 3 life terms for your family member? Are you all that self-righteous and perfect that you have to continue to rejoice over this "witch hunt"? My God, from the way you all are cheering and jeering, one would think that you're at a Superbowl game.
Let's leave this young man alone and allow his family to grieve him as well. In an essence, he is dead already. He will be behind bars for the rest of his life. He can't hurt anyone anymore, but don't put aside the fact that HE is hurting and so is his family.
I am not at all saying I support this heinous crime, but I am saying that we should stop rejoicing. The case is over now. Connors life is over now. We built the prisons, so yes, we must care for him for the rest of his life.
Think about your own families and the young people who are in it. Don't sit back and wish the worst on someone unless you are prepared to face the same in your own family. I am certainly sure Connors family NEVER thought anything like that would come from him. Bottom line is you know yourself, and what you are capable of.
Can you say the same for the rest of your family?
