Tulane fraternity suspended after alleged hazing

Published Wednesday, May 7, 2008

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — More than 10 fraternity pledges at Tulane University were burned with hot water and pepper spray during a "hell night" initiation, an attorney representing one of the pledges say.

Five members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity were arrested Tuesday and five other members were being sought, police said. The university suspended the fraternity and started its own investigation into the alleged hazing, which took place April 25-26.

"This fraternity is no longer a recognized fraternity at Tulane," the university said in a news release.

The five fraternity members who surrendered Tuesday were booked with felony aggravated second-degree battery, said Officer Garry Flot, a New Orleans police spokesman. The other five were arranging to surrender, he said.

Police and the university provided few details.

Attorney Frank D'Amico Jr., who represents one of the pledges allegedly burned, more than 10 men were burned. He said at least two pledges were severely burned and reported the attack to police. D'Amico said his client suffered second- and third-degree burns.

The aggravated second-degree battery charge carries up to 15 years in prison.

This is so STUPID!! I was in a sorority and we never did things like this. I know it is heard of more in the frats, but this is going to the extreme!! These frat boys were wrong for this and should be punished. I attended several "PIKE" parties back in my college days at N.L.U. now U.L.M. and they never did these bad things to thier pledges. WOW bet these guys are going to regret hazing thier pledges like this.

I think the whole "Greek" system is disfunctional and should be removed from all colleges and universities. They cause more harm than good. All you hear these days about the Greek organizations are deaths as a result of hazing, binge drinking or drugs. I thought it was all about higher education. Go figure!

You only hear about these hazing events because that is what is reported in the news. Greeks are about higher education as well as citizenship, friendship, committment, community awareness, and countless other great things. They raise thousands of dollars every year for charity. They work hard, and yes, they play hard. These hazing things are a few bad apples and quite the minority. I can tell you first hand that the Greeks at LSU are very involved in campus organizations and strive for excellence.

I agree pittypat55. We were made to study by our "big sis" and had to keep a certain GPA in order to participate in any activities. We also had to have so many comunity service hours each semester and hosted charity events 3-4 times a year. It was a great experience to be part of the greek life.Ofcourse that was many years ago, it looks like things have changed...what a shame.

Did you read about the Greek fraternity in yesterday's paper that is under suspension because they were running an extremely large drug operation. They even sent out text message "sale" notices. You have to admit that overall, the whole fraternity/sorority thing has been going downhill for a long while.

Just had an afterthought. Maybe it is the parenting skills that are going downhill and it is contributing to the other.
