School leaders trade board room for awards ceremony

Published Friday, May 9, 2008

NATCHEZ — It wasn’t your ordinary school board meeting.

The lights were off in the Braden School boardroom. Papers were left scattered on the board table, as if signifying something had pulled the movers and the shakers away.

And down the hall, in the building’s largest room, the microphone boomed and the seats were full.

The Natchez-Adams School Board strayed from the ordinary Thursday to publicly recognize close to 100 of their finest.

Superintendent Anthony Morris handed out certificates to members of the Natchez High choir, the state champion NHS powerlifting team, the district champion tennis team, 21 Mississippi Scholars, seven Parents of the Year and a few others.

And when the crowds left and the meeting returned to the same-old-same-old board members said the hour-long ceremony was time well spent.

“We had a different kind of board meeting,” Chairman Norris Edney said. “But I don’t regret the time and at all. The students were just marvelous.”

Woop-de-do... This is usually done in the Skeckler building for the community to witness. Why keep it a secret? Do you guys think this is special? Dr. Norris and Dr. Edney, please leave already.

I presume the Democrat is planning an article about the awards, with the names of the Mississippi Scholars and the Parents of the Year. NHS had an awards ceremony at 6 p.m. yesterday as well, it'd be nice to see some of those kids' names in the paper too. Hopefully NASD has sent the information to ND.

Give credit where credit is due. If potential businesses and homebuyers read how we are proud of the local school system, they just may decide to move to Natchez. Keep it up, Natchez Democrat! I'm proud of yall, too.

Congratulations to all the students for their outstanding achievement. I agree this is about the children, let's give praise to all. Despite the feeling one may have for Dr. Morris and Dr. Edney, which I might add are two of the most outstanding individuals I know, let's keep things positive. Sometimes when children hear adults being negative….
Well let's say “Children tend to model or speak what they hear”.

Why was the Honors Awards Program for academics not included in this awards program given for sports and music? I agree that all of them are very important, but the children at Natchez High were not honored with the presence of the superintendent, high school administrative principal, nor any school board members. Was this poor planning, or is this the reason why we have number 2 schools? Putting academics on the back burner will definely render low performing schools. I read in the ND that the Honors Award Program for NHS was scheduled yesterday also, and I checked with a few friends, who said that the head administrators did not show up. SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!
