Young girl recovering after being hit by car

Published Monday, May 12, 2008

VIDALIA — A Vidalia girl was treated and released from Natchez Community Hospital Monday after being the victim of a hit and run on Mother’s Day.

Truniya Davis, 6, is resting comfortably at home, said a relieved Shawntel Moody, the girl’s mother.

Moody said she and her daughter were celebrating Mother’s Day at a neighborhood barbecue on Concordia Park Drive when the incident occurred. According to witnesses, Davis was riding her bike on the side of the road when a tan Chevrolet Malibu struck her. Moody did not witness the incident.

Witnesses said the impact sent Davis flying through the air before landing harshly against the concrete road. According to a deputy report released by the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s office, one witness stated he “heard a thump and a child scream.”

Lakeisha Robinson, a witness and family friend, said a female was behind the wheel. Two males who were sitting on the hood of the car obstructed the driver’s view.

Robinson said a male witness attempted to flag down the car before it sped off.

Davis’s bike now rests in Robinson’s front yard, where Robinson continues to search for answers.

“Who would do something like that?” she asked. How can you have no conscience, no nothing? We want to know who (the driver) is and does she have kids?”

Davis was rushed to Natchez Community Hospital, where she stayed overnight. She has abrasions on her back and chest and her leg is badly bruised, but she’s expected to make a full recovery.

“Anybody who knows who it is please turn them in because nobody should hit somebody’s child and leave like that,” Moody said.

The incident remains under investigation.

If no one actually saw the child struck I'm then not convinced it was deliberate. At that young an age on a bicycle she could have easily veered into the the front of this car.

Deliberate or not, what kind of person hits a child then leaves the scene? "Two men were sitting on the hood obstructing the drivers view"...ok, what were two men doing sitting on the hood while she was driving???

Idiots.

I hope they find her. Seems like the older I get, my view of the world and the idiots that are in it gets more negative.

ozette, I agree.

If a child "veered" in front of YOUR car, and you struck the child, would you have stopped???? I would have.

I hope the little girl is feeling much better, and is not afraid to get back on her bike. This woman needs to come forward.

Not putting blame on anyone, but I live close to the area and was driving down that road the other day and a little girl on a bike swerved right in front of the car in front of me and she never looked back to see if anything was coming. Thank goodness the driver was paying attention and not going fast.

The bike itself may have paint from the car on it.

If i was the child parents i would get the police to do a trace on all the vehicles alike....then get the police to approach the vehicle owners home and look for either answers or damages to the vehicles like scraches or dents on the vehicle to get a conclusion.

EXACTLY jch! We need to wait this one out for the remainder of the story. Of course I TOO would have stopped and probably even have driven the child to the hospital myself but we don't know what all exactly happened here.

not only the women but the guys on the hood as well. and no witness's at a neighborhood bar-ba-cue?

It doesn't matter if the little girl swerved in front of that car. The driver should have stopped--period! If it was a complete accident that's even more reason to stop if you aren't at fault. I agree with a previous comment--what in the heck were two people doing riding on the hood??

Children often don't look or pay attention - we all know that. HOWEVER, that is why drivers need to be alert at all times to what is going on around them. You can't see if you have people sitting on the hood - that is illegal in itself I should think.
BTW - Cassandra Mickins seems to be an excellent writer. I didn't see any flaws in her article. Hope she stays whoever she is.

Truniya we hope you get well soon! Truniya goes to school with my son and it makes me realize that could have been my child. This also could have been much worse. If she was looking or not the driver should have stopped and made sure she was ok. Two people were sitting on the hood of her car? That sounds like reckless driving. I hope they find the driver and the two that were on the hood of the car. They are just as much at fault as the driver.

I agree we have to be alert drivers, but if all of a sudden someone swerves in front of you, sometimes you cannot do anything about it. I also agree there should not have been anyone on the hood of the vehicle, but as you say children often don't look or pay attention, neither do drivers, so everyone is a little at fault I supppose sometimes. It is still very tragic that this happened.

You would have to think that either someone in the car, or in this case, on the car is from around that area or either they were visiting someone close. They will find out who was involved soon.

It's a shame in this day and age that you can't let your child ride their bike out of your sight for fear that something like this could happen. The days of trusting that everyone is careful and that they will do the right thing are long gone it seems.

I'm so happy Truniya will be okay. It sounds like the driver was probably young. I can't even imagine hitting a little child and not stopping. My fault or not ~ she had to have been terrified, so how could someone just leave her in the street like that? That's just awful! They need to be found and prosecuted for their unhumane actions. If it had been an animal done that way the Humane Society group would be on them hot-n-heavy, so I say "You play, you pay"! Hopefully others will read this article and see how stupid and dangerous it is to play behind the wheel of a car - especially with people on the hood distracting the driver and obstructing their view, all 3 should be in trouble. "Thank you Lord for protecting this precious little girl". I pray she will recover quickly.

P.S. To the parents of small children riding bikes............You need to be watching your small children on the streets. They are our responsibility as parents to protect. This very thing happened to my husband & I on Mother's Day and thank goodness my husband was paying attention as a little boy swirved out in front of us on a bike and continued to cross the street, never looking, never stopping. Where are the parents?

Someone brought up a good point. I am sure that neighborhood had people out celebrating, namely at the BBQ her parent was attending, and no one saw anything? Very strange. Was the car able to speed off so quickly that not even half the tag number could be read?

Goodness, some of the posts here are scary! Deliberate? veered into the car? No one saw..?

"Witnesses said the impact sent Davis flying through the air before landing harshly against the concrete road"

"Lakeisha Robinson, a witness and family friend, said a female was behind the wheel. Two males who were sitting on the hood of the car obstructed the driver’s view"

"a male witness attempted to flag down the car before it sped off."

Of course children may veer into a car's path. That is why you must drive very carefully around children!

Of course if you have two men sitting on the hood of a car you are driving there is a lot you won't see.

But no "must have, maybe, or shoulda", the driver knew she hit a kid on a bicycle and then sped off, and the two on the hood knew as well. They get the Great Human Being Awards for today.

Accident??? Stupidity more like it..... Fleeing the scene of an accident==== AGAINST THE LAW. Should be caught and suffer the consequences.

So glad the child is safe, but parents please, please encourage your children to be more careful. My great-granddaughter is only 3 yrs old and constantly watches for traffic because the road in front of her house is the only place she has to ride her little bike. Although not a well traveled road she is watched at all times to make sure she is safe. Please be careful for the little children in all neighborhoods. Watch your children, make sure they are safe from traffic.

What kind of low life hits a kid and leaves? It sounds like there were plenty of witnesses to the crime but as usual no one in the community is talking. Fleeing the scene is sickening but not reporting the facts to protect a criminal is just as bad.

I am so thankful the child is ok. We all know how easy it is for a child on a bike to swerve in front of us so we need to be careful driving in a residential area where there are small children. Accidents happen to all of us but when one happens we should take the responsibility.
Now we all need to be watching for the tan Chevrolet Malibu. I'm sure they are very aware that they are being searched for. Let's not give them the pleasure of thinking they can hit a child then run. I hope the Demorcrat will let us know if & when they are caught.
The thing that is puzzling me is what happened to the two men on the hood when she sped off. Did they hang on or fall off & run? If they had stopped & gotten into the car the witnesses should have seen it.
The main thing is the child is ok. Next time things may not have a happy ending.

I fully understand and have seen how kids that age, will veer off into traffic, not looking and not having full control of the bicycle. I still say in this case, according to the current report, so much was going on wrong with the driver and I don't understand why if there were two men seen on the hood of the car, how no one thought that odd, or no one knew them in the neighbohood, unless they were just cruising through. But what about those teens, etc, who deliberately stand in the street and act as if you and your car should move? I can't stand that.

Posted by Demise (anonymous) on May 13, 2008 at 11:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I do hope they find them. Who would even turn their car on with two people sitting on the hood? What were they thinking?!

I know she was a child that should have been supervised, but her mom was at the party(barbeque) with her friends. Where was the dad? The two young men were riding on the hood? Did they stay on the hood or did they get off the hood? This car should have been easy to spot fleeing through Vidalia with 2 young men on the hood. If they got off the car before it left, Then don't they know the person that was driving them around on the hood of their car? If the witnesses saw the child flying and they saw it was a tan Chevy Malibu, how many tan Chevy Malibus are they around Vidalia? Come on, now once the young female is caught( this should be easy even if Barney was on the case), her parents will bail her out and she will not pay the full consequences. Then, every time she does something wrong, she will expect people to go light on her because she did not have to pay for the consequences of this incident.

I am glad the little girl is ok, but I am very interested in watching this one play out.

PS, If I were me driving, I would have stopped when I got the child to the hospital, because I would have been the one driving her mom and her there!!!

If you skip out on an accident like this, put your car on the bottom of the river please...This will serve 2 purposes:

1. You will not be driving for a while because you will not have a car.(* This will make it much much safer for pedestrians)
2. The catfish need a good habitat to live in and this would be fun to hand grab fish out of...lol..

( Please note the sarcasm in the last 2 remarks)

Somebody call CSI.

Posted by redusmfan (anonymous) on May 13, 2008 at 4:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

CSI would laugh that they were even called on such a simple case as this.

But, I guarantee that we are not hearing the full story. The rest of the story will explain all the gaps in this story.

Thank God that she is ok! What is wrong with people?! Where were the babies parents? It is against the law to ride on hoods. DUH! The woman KNEW that she hit the baby! She HAD to have seen her flying through the air! my word! God have mercy on our children! People are living like animals with absoutely no concious at all! I pray that the woman has sleepless nights and that justice will be served soon. God bless our children!

What happened to the 2 guys? They have to know the name of the lady. Did anybody question them? She needs to turn herself in. She should also be charged for driving with people on the hood of her car.

I feel like you, blessed_momma. When I read this story, I felt a wrenching in my stomach! The horror of it! I probably won't get to sleep easily tonite thinking about this child. I hope she isn't scarred mentally after this.

Forrest Gump said, "Stupid is as stupid does". Shame on that stupid girl driving. I wonder how she sleeps tonight!

I go through this area at times and let me tell ya it is like a party all the time their. People walking the streets with half their clothes on thinking they are looking good and in house slippers, the road is full of people all the time so why would a speeding motorist go flying through their and with two people on the hood of the car unless they were parting with them? Some thing are not adding up. I bet the care turns out to be a different color and the young girl turns out to be a guy and so on......... Cant't wait to see this play out either but Like I said their is no telling what you might see. BUT I am glad the LITTLE GIRL is O.K. and I wish her a speedy recovery.

Use to be that everyone in Vidalia knew everyone's car by
its color and model.Has the town gotten that large now?I am sure that if the person attended the barbeque everyone knew who was driving that car??????Just question any teenager that was there.
