Ferriday board opposes proposed state legislation

Published Tuesday, May 13, 2008

FERRIDAY — The Ferriday Board of Alderman sailed efficiently through their agenda at Tuesday evening’s regular meeting.

They unanimously approved to oppose House Bills 440, 442 and 453 of the 2008 legislative session which would allow for the Louisiana Department of Revenue to collect, distribute and disburse local sales taxes.

They also voted unanimously to protest legislation restricting revenue generated from traffic violations.

Under new business, they adopted a new insurance package for the town’s employees.

In this package, two current employees that are 65 years or older will be moved to a Medicare program which will save the city some money.

They city is currently insured by Blue Cross Blue Shield and by renewing their contract, the total cost of the city’s insurance package will be raised by $9,600 per year.

If the two 65-plus year old employees were not moved off, the increase would be $1,236.

The board voted to move the two eligible for Medicare and to stay with Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Had the city switched insurance provides to avoid a financial increase, their benefits would have dropped dramatically.

Mayor Gene Allen requested travel expenses for two trips.

He was allowed expenses to be paid for him to go to the National Conference of Black Mayors that will be in New Orleans in June.

He also wanted his expenses to be paid to attend the Miss Black USA Pageant in Las Vegas this year, as one of the contestants is a Ferriday native.

The board did not approve this request.

Allen announced that Fred’s Department Store is opening at 8 a.m. May 30 and has requested the presence of the board members.

The board also voted unanimously to name the Concordia Sentinel as Ferriday’s official journal.

Springfield Baptist Church will be using Ferriday’s gym for their annual homecoming talent show on May 30.

Charter Communications sent Ferriday a letter notifying them that they would no longer be offering satellite services to the town.

Thank goodness the "travel expense" was declined. He was probably going to have his "LAST BIG BANG" on Ferriday....New Orleans and Las Vegas?!?!? Why would he NEED to go to a convention for Black Mayors, as he is no longer going to be a Black Mayor as of July?????

My thoughts too, justme. Maybe everyone should call each alderman and find this out and let the public veto these plans since they did vote to put him out of office. Get to the phones Ferriday and keep that money in your treasury.

Why is there a black mayors convention at all? Such a group by virtue of it's name and agenda is excluding all other races, yet would screech indignantly if you called them on such a racist name.

By all means, don't have a mayors convention, dont use all available persons and resources - make your own exclusive little club under the guise of exclusivity and pompous conceit.

Where does the White Mayors convention meet, anyway?

White Mayors convention would not be allowed. Racist! It would probably bring in CNN just like poor Jena had to suffer.

The White mayors meet once every four years and called it the republican national convention.

Yes, everyone knows there are no black republicans.
However, being a bigoted buffoon knows no racial bounds.
