Parish DA race sees interest
Published Sunday, May 18, 2008
VIDALIA — At least two former co-workers will square off as candidates in the October election for the Seventh Judicial District’s District Attorney.
First Assistant District Attorney Brad Burget has officially announced his candidacy, and Assistant District Attorney Ronnie McMillin confirmed he plans to run for the position.
District Attorney John Johnson, who will have served as DA for 24 years when his term expires, has previously stated publicly that he does not plan to seek re-election.
Burget said he made the decision to run when Johnson informed him he was not going to run again.
Though he will stay at the office until June 7 to work on a case, Burget tendered a letter of resignation to Johnson May 6.
After that, Burget will work at Smith, Taliaferro and Purvis, where he is a partner.
“I am sure the majority of my focus will be out campaigning, meeting people and sharing my ideas about how the DA’s office can be improved,” Burget said.
McMillin said he was caught off guard when the DA made his announcement, but that there was no hesitation on McMillin’s part about running.
“The question is not why I decided to run, but why would I not?” McMillin said. “I’ve been with the DA’s office for 24 years, and I was first ADA for 16 years.”
In the meantime, McMillin said he would continue to work at the DA’s office until closer to when he officially announces his candidacy.
Qualifying for the Oct. 4 election will be July 9 to 11.
The Seventh Judicial District encompasses Catahoula and Concordia Parishes.

Since elementary School I always knew that Brad Burget would one day achieve very high goals in life.
He was a very nice, smart and honest guy to everyone regardless of how "popular" of a student you were.
After seeing a few years back that Brad was working with DA Johnson as the FADA I started watching (through the local media)some of the cases he was working on and he seems to still be an honest and fair man.
This news story points out to me that he is willing to give it everything by resigning from his FADA job to focus on winning this election.
I'm looking forward to being able to go and cast my vote for Mr. Burget in October.

Actually, the Concordia sentinal quoted Johnson as saying that if anyone was to formally announce candidacy, he must resign from the DA's office, "effective immediately".

Why does Burget have signs in Adams County, MS? Saw one today at the Magnolia Grill.

olderthandirt- people have the right to support whoever they want regardless of where they live, work, shop or even own property but that does not always mean that they will VOTE for that person. They just support them.
Heck,I live in LA and I support Chick Granning with hopes that he'll win the mayoral race in Natchez,I work and shop and sometimes eat in Natchez.
We are a community,We are the Miss-Lou and in some ways we can unite, inspire and work together to build our "community" (that I'll bet has an impact in your life)up to be a great place to call home.
But as far as the place you saw the sign in MS if you don't like what signs they have on display YOU have the right not to go there, simple as that.

Brad Burget will be a great DA and has my support! I would be happy to help Brad campaign any time. He has proved himself to be a fighting attorney for his clients. Just in the past couple of yrs since Brad has been back in Vidalia, he has worked very hard for many people. As for Ronnie Mac ~ he is a fine person, but in the past he hasn't proven himself to be fit for the DA position (and this is from personal experience).

Brad Burget will make an excellent DA for Concordia Parish. He is an honest, hard-working person and a wonderful family man. He has proven already that he's doing what it takes to get crime and drug off the streets of our communities. As the DA, I would only see better things for the people of Concordia Parish. VOTE FOR BURGET!
