Police investigating accident on bridge
Published Sunday, May 18, 2008
VIDALIA — Traffic was closed on one side of the Mississippi River bridge after an early morning car accident that resulted in one fatality.
Two others were injured in the accident and were airlifted to a Jackson hospital. Those involved were reportedly from Ferriday.
Vidalia Police officers were working to reconstruct the scene on the Natchez-bound bridge Sunday morning and early afternoon. Traffic was flowing in both directions on the Vidalia-bound bridge.
The bridge reopened to traffic at approximately 2:30 p.m.
The four-car accident occurred at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday. Some passengers have been transported to Jackson to be treated for injuries.
Louisiana State Police are assisting in the investigation.
Vidalia Police and state police had not been available for comment as of 3:30 p.m. Officers on the scene would not comment, and officers at the station said they would not release further information until Monday morning. Police Chief Billy Hammers has said he has no information. VPD Captain Arthur Lewis said he did not know how many passengers were involved or how many fatalities there were.
Since the accident occurred on the Natchez-bound bridge, Vidalia officers are in charge of the investigation. Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said none of his officers were involved in filing a report or investigating the scene.

how many cars were involved and was there damage to the new bridge? my prayers are with the family of the person that lost their life....

I was told 4 car pile up. 1 fatality at the scene that I know of for sure then I was told (and this is hearsay, I'm not sure how reliable) that another person died on the way to the hospital.
My prayers go out to all people involved and their families as well!

I heard it was caused by a truck driving on the wrong bridge and that it resulted in 4 or 5 car pile-up. There was also talk that there were a few fatalities.... Anyone know?

There seems to be so much tragedy in these surrounding areas. Just days ago the 4 wheeler accident in ferriday.

O.K. Natchez Democrat it's time for an update. If you are going to report it as breaking news you need to keep up!! Don't let rumors hang.
This is a real tragedy and I send prayers to the families involved.

This is terrible, my prayers are with the families of the people involved! I just came through at 2:15pm and the traffic is still being directed on the Vidalia bound bridge.

This is a terrible tragedy! Coming from a very reliable source, this accident is being investigated and believed to have involved teenagers / young adults racing across the bridge. Only one fatality (possibly from Ferriday area) as of this morning, not too sure about who or how many were actually involved in the accident.

I agree with bayougranny they need to keep the breaking news updated. It has only been 2 hours since ND reported on this so maybe they will update it. The rumor I heard: 2 people died it was a several car pile up. One vehicle was going the wrong way on the bridge and gunshots were also fired before the wreck.

Just talked to one of the family members of one of the guys that got killed. She said her cousin Terrance Johnson aged 19 was killed along with 2 others that were with him. They were all where under the age of 20, the 3 killed were all from Ferriday. She also said some guys in another vehicle were going down the wrong side of the bride and that's what caused the wreck.

I meant to say "bridge"..... Also the reason the bridge is closed is because they are waiting on the State Police to investigate. I am not sure if that is standard procedure or not in a fatality. Does anyone know? I asked if they were racing or firing guns she said no. But, if all the people in the vehicle with Terrance died, is the family certain what actually happened? Do the police think it could be more to the story? Not sure of the condition of the white boys that were going the wrong way down the bridge. I'm white, my friend that told me the story is black and she referred to them that way. It's not racist, she was just trying to tell me all the information she knew.

What were the ages of the ones killed?
Posted by sportsfan (anonymous) on May 18, 2008 at 3:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I believe they were all between the ages of 19 & 22. All were from Ferriday. Terrence Johnson was the stand-out quarterback at Huntington last year, he played at Ferriday before then. He and one of the others were students at Alcorn. Please pray for all the families involved.

These are really times we need to pray, tragedy happens, but these last few people who have been involved, were very young and had their lives ahead of them. I feel deeply for the families and they are in my prayers!
I wonder, in order to be going down the wrong side of the bridge, the individual(s) had to be riding down the wrong side of the road, before getting to the bridge. Nonetheless, it's always been time to pray, but with summer coming up, kids graduating, please pray for them all. We all need prayer.

4:00am on the wrong bridge sounds alcohol related. What a tragedy.
I do believe that any highway fatality requires State Police to investigate. On the bridge, both states may be required to do so, but don't hold me to that.

Last night, Well this morning around 5 everyone was leaving a party at Dannys. The car that caused this accident came flying straight towards me an my friends. I promise God was with us because we all literally hit each other moving out of the way. There was at least a 4 car pile up an we parked our cars on the side to get out and help anyone who may be injured. Everyone was screaming and crying and there was this one car that had at least twenty people surrounding it. My friend and I walked up to the car and there were two guys in there. People were trying to call their names but i knew they were dead. Things happened so fast!!! I couldnt believe my eyes. Their I was watchig the last moments of these two young men who were trapped in the car!! I think that this should be a wake up call for so many people. Not only was this fatal but now I cant concentrate on anything because I keep seeing their faces!! That car got away last night but there are red lights and stores with cameras and I pray to God that justice will be served!! I also pray that God has mercy on the soul of the ignorant people who were playing. And that he will be there in the heart of the families who suffered the lost!! If there is anything I can do please email me!!!!!!!
So many of us often take things for granted.. Last night was a big wake up call for me. I realized that God shows us things that we look over because we are often to ignorant to pay attention to the lesson. I was there with those guys last night and the picture is so vivid in my mind. There I was a few cars behind them and God watched over me and my friends. All I can hear is the screams and the cries from the people who were surrounding the car. And for some unknown reason it was like I lost a part of me to Last Night!!!

I went back and read and I don't think it was a family member that released a name. I really hope they had the family's permission to do so.. If not they should be ashamed of themselves, what if they weren't able to get in touch with a family member yet and they come and read it on here.. That's not the best way to find tragic news out. But I guess its a little too late to be saying anything now... What's done is done... I just am really curious now as to the particulars of what happened. If there's one thing I hate about Natchez its all the rumors that start flying around when something like this happens. Some of the most off the wall things can be said.. I'd like to know what is reality and what is rumor, or if they even know yet with the investigation and all.
Still praying for the families and those who were present... Its NEVER too late for a prayer!!!!

firered The very first line of my post stated I had just talked to one of his family members. I am very good friends with several of Terrance's family members. Terrance's family was gathered at his house today grieving. Yes I had permission to use his name. Why didn't I post anyone else's name that died? Because I didn't have an ok from their family to post their names.

I am confused. The person speaking for the family said that there were three people in that vehicle that were killed, but the person who witnessed it said there were only two people in the car. Were there fatalities from more than one vehicle? Or was she unable to see the third person? God bless all involved.

Thanks, toosweet. So were the previous reports wrong in saying there were three dead? Actually only one fatality? Does anyone have any information on the other people involved? Were there any other injurires in the other vehicles? I'm wondering why there were so many people on the bridge at 4:00 in the morning. That seems odd to me. Especially if there were 20 people surrounding that one car. Where did all of these people come from?
Posted by toosweet (anonymous) on May 18, 2008 at 9:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Froggie, all or most of these people were leaving the club in vidalia heading to a club in Natchez. As of right now only one is confirmed dead but the other is brain dead. I heard that they are waiting to pull the plug but don't quote me on that. They were all Ferriday residents.

Thanks again, toosweet. This is a horrible tragedy, regardless of what caused it or who was at fault. I pray the others will be ok. Have you heard anything about the vehicle going wrong direction fleeing the scene? Like I said earlier, I may have misunderstood that comment by the witness. I hope that is not true. If it is, I hope they are found.

This is being reported in a new story about the accident:
"Lewis said the accident involved at least four cars and an unknown number of people. Passengers in the vehicles who apparently fled the scene at the time of the accident have trickled into the Vidalia Police Department all day long, Lewis said."
Posted by toosweet (anonymous) on May 18, 2008 at 9:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Froggie, from all that I can gather from a witness, there was definitely someone traveling to Vidalia on the Natchez bound bridge but I am getting conflicting reports on the person that was going the wrong way. I have heard that that person fled the scene and I have heard that the person was one of those in the accident but from one I can personally put together, it seems as though the person going the wrong way was not involved in the accident but caused the others to wreck in an attempt to dodge the person traveling in the wrong direction. I'm not sure though but I'll keep you posted as I get more information. I'm waiting on a call to find out more about the passengers.

Natchez Democrat...it is a bad idea to allow people to post the
names of the alleged deceased on your website. Please reconsider your policy on this. What is some cruel person plays a "practical joke" and posts the name of someone who isn't deceased or someone hears something and it turns out not to be true and factual. Details of the accident and the names of the deceased should be coming from law enforcement and the coroners office, not people posting comments on the Democrat. Kevin Cooper, please rethink your policy on this. I believe in freedom of speech, but sometimes these comment blogs are going too far.

Toosweet..I appreciate your comments but I disagree. There is something you can do about it. There are blogs who don't do immediate posting. They are reviewed by someone before they are posted. I think that names of deceased should not be allowed to be posted. Law enforcement and the coroners office should be
giving out this information.

Thanks again for that info, toosweet. That makes more sense now. I was confused. I was wondering if this person they arrested for DWI is the one that was traveling the wrong way (that caused the accident). Of course, it doesn't matter at this point. Lives were lost regardless of who was at fault. Bless these families.

I'm not sure why the deceased cousin told me 2 others died that were with him. I am assuming that is what his family was original told. I will call tomorrow and find out why she thought 3 died. That is exactly why I didn't post the names of anyone else because I didn't have permission to say anything about them and hadn't confirmed anything with the other families. What law enforcement thought caused the wreck could change I assume since they are/were doing an investigation. When this breaking news occurred all information was new and the community was in shock. Everyone was posting and reading comments to try to figure out what happened. DahlingILuvUButGiveMeParkAve I am curious to why you scrolled down to read the comments on the article. Because you stated in your post:
"Details of the accident and the names of the deceased should be coming from law enforcement and the coroners office, not people posting comments on the Democrat."
I am not trying to be rude or get on your case but I am curious to what you were expecting people to be commenting about on here. Were you yourself curious and wanting to know who was hurt or what happened? To my knowledge the proper authorities don't usually post the details they have under the comments section.
I agree some cruel person could play a cruel joke on another and post a name or incident that didn't actually happen on here, but that cruel person could also "prank call" a family and do the same thing, only over the phone the cruel person could act as law enforcement. It's really the same difference I think. However the cruel prank caller could reach his intended target directly by telephone and on here maybe the cruel persons comment could be removed before the intended target read it if the comment is found out to be totally untrue. Maybe I thought to much into this but the wrong information can be posted on the net or by someone using the telephone.

The entire investigation seems to be confusing at this point. The one true fact is lives have been lost and many are grieving over this tragedy! It is very hard to accept that we are only here on loan from our mighty God, and our date of death is unknown.(sandyman7) We all can't help but ask 'why' or 'what if', but has anyone ever thought of 'why not'? No one is deserving of tragedy, but what makes anyone sparing of it either. I recent lost someone close to me through a tragic accident also, and he was a wonderful person, the best dad to his children. But during the time that I was asking 'why', my pastor ask me 'why not'. My prayers go out to each person that has been heart broken due to this tragedy. Families, just know that your loved one is in a much better place than we are! Rejoice and smile on the times that you spent together, don't dwell on the day of his death. I am just passing along some of the advice that I was given, may you use these words as I have. God be with you all!!!!

What seems to has happened is that the person that caused the accident, who was driving a gray mustang, was traveling on the wrong bridge because he was trying to escape someone who was driving a red mustang that was chasing and shooting at him. Once the gray mustang crashed into the passengers he fled the scene and the driver of the red mustang turned around in Vidalia and sped back across the bridge to Natchez.

I am glad I am moving into my apartment here in Hattiesburg tomorrow, but afraid because my mom still lives in that area.
I know accidents happen everywhere, but I will NEVER raise my child in a town like Natchez, where drinking is encouraged as the ONLY funthing there is to do (despite all of the things different places plan); and where kids do stupid crap like this just to get their jollies off.
It is scary and I'd suggest anyone with young, still pliable children, or those who are thinking about having children, MOVE AWAY and do not raise your kids there.....

first off, i took photos of the vehicles as i was crossing to Natchez across the old bridge, and the damage that was done to those vehicles, it seems very unlikely that the grey mustang would have been able to drive away from this

This is truly a horrific tragedy, my thoughts and prayers are with all the family and friends that were involved. I hope the person/persons that "ran" have a conscience and do the right thing by coming forward and taking responsibility.
Something else...srob....just because u seem to have "issues" with Natchez, doesn't mean everyone feels that way. There is crime, tragedy, and will always be kids doing "stupid" crap to get their "jollies" off everywhere! It is not always kids...people of all ages, races, and backgrounds are capable of horrific things that are not justifiable. Corruption is everywhere.....u can't run and hide from it....u can try and avoid and set a better example for those u love and care about and hope they follow the right path.....I'm not thrilled with living in Natchez myself, but there are alot worse places to live out there....

It's been over 24 hours. So far, we have gotten little info from law enforcement. Let's hope that they release something substantive this morning.

um guys, this isn't CSI. it doesn't take less than a week to solve a crime/incident like on TV. This could take months, even years, considering there are likely people coming forward who werent even there, trying to "help" or telling stories they've heard, or just making up stuff to be in the limelight. you have to realize that this is going to take longer, and even then, we may NEVER know what happened. just because there is an investigation doesn't mean it will ever be solved. there will be many theories, but no one knows what happened except those involved, and the key bits of info may have only been held by those who have passed because of this. don't be so impatient, and give the cops the time they need to solve a case. would you prefer they jump to conclusions and blame the wrong people? i wouldn't! these things take time, people, and they are not required to tell ANYONE ANYTHING until they feel like it. we are lucky we have been told all that we have.
