Bridge accident likely two unrelated incidents

Published Tuesday, May 20, 2008

VIDALIA — The five-car, two-fatality accident on the Mississippi River bridge Sunday was likely two separate accidents, Vidalia Police said Tuesday.

The first accident was a single-car accident, and was alcohol related.

In the single-vehicle accident, a Ford Mustang slammed into the side of the bridge.

Police were apparently already on their way to respond to that accident when the second accident occurred, Vidalia Lt. Delayne Bush said.

The second accident likely began before the vehicles reached the scene of the second accident, but ended further down the bridge, Bush said.

The matter is still under investigation.

FINALLY!!!
Some information!!
Thanks ND :)

Yes, thanks! At least we know something now. See, some were quick to judge that young man that was arrested for DWI and it appears he didn't cause this. He may have been driving drunk, but he didn't hit another vehicle, so the unfortunate death of those two young men were not his fault.

I assume he was not harmed too bad? Does anyone know?

Exactly what I thought. My sympathy to all of the people in each town. You were touched some way. Support each other in love.

Question. So no one was driving on the wrong side of the bridge? That's an awful assumption and report to release when that totally did not happen.

Posted by firered (anonymous) on May 20, 2008 at 3:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

They didn't say which direction the cars were headed Teach.. Just that they were two separate incidents.

I'm still confused.

I haven't seen anything in the paper (other than in the comment sections online) about the possibility of someone going the wrong way. I may have missed something, but I reread the online articles a couple of times. I think that may have been the supposition because a couple of the vehicles were pointed back toward Vidalia but they were most likely spun around by the impacts - they were really torn up. Hopefully the police will get to the bottom of this quickly so the families can move on after this tragedy.

I think they were definitely going wrong way on bridge and I don't buy none of it. I think there's more to it than what's being told, but I don't really care, just hope the families are o.k. and will pray for them.

The FIRST initial article stating a vehicle was traveling the wrong way on the bridge.

Posted by commander (anonymous) on May 20, 2008 at 5:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

There was a car that turned around on the bridge after it passed the wrecked mustang. The driver was trying to warn oncoming traffic of the wreck by flashing its lights from bright to dim. The driver of that car also called VPD to report the wreck.

Posted by Babydoll601 (anonymous) on May 20, 2008 at 5:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Okay now. With the Mustang, I heard that someone was racing on the bridge in another Mustang. Got in front of the Mustang at hand sped up then threw on breaks and then Mustang at hand swurved to miss the other Mustang and that's how they slammed into the bridge. However the other Mustang kept going. It was a single car accident but they need to be looking for the red Mustang that caused this wreck to occur. That turned & went back to Vidalia.

Thanks. I had missed the original article, and commander, that makes sense.

More of you folks ought to put your names up instead of the "anonymous". That way we can know who we are talking to.

Posted by gnikmas (anonymous) on May 20, 2008 at 5:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Teach,

The newspaper itself didn't report any vehicles traveling the wrong way on the bridge. Several individuals commented in the comments sections (here, online) that a vehicle was traveling the wrong way and caused the accident. That has not been been confirmed by the police.

As well, FINE IN CAMO, you should come forth and give your statement to the police department if you were truly on the bridge at the time of the accident.

I agree with you gnikmas....everyone who has information
about these accidents should go directly to the police and not
post it on this website. Sometimes the police doesn't want information given out for various reasons and posters can unknowningly screw up an investigation.

So the first wrecked vehicle was the one in which the passagers were killed? The second mustang did what?

linenbreeze---- EVERYTHING about the first accident is what i knew.. and as u can see i was correct.. apology accepted..

oldschool - You stated that you were on the bridge at the time of these accidents - If this is so - then why don't YOU go to the police and tell them what happened?
Furthermore, what does "black kids" have to do with this incident?

froggie : "See, some were quick to judge that young man that was arrested for DWI and it appears he didn't cause this. He may have been driving drunk, but he didn't hit another vehicle, so the unfortunate death of those two young men were not his fault."

This has to be one of the most asinine comments I have ever read. I WILL judge the young man with the DWI. You are condoning the fact that he was driving drunk. Just because he was lucky enough not to hurt someone else this time doesn't mean he will be so lucky next time.

Posted by froggie (anonymous) on May 20, 2008 at 8:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No, I was not in any way condoning what he did. I was stating that he wasn't responsible for the deaths of those two young men, as others have commented. I absolutely do not believe in drinking and driving. If you don't believe me - read some of my previous posts. You took that comment out of context.

Sunkitty, no offense, but oldschool was quoting another poster. Those were not oldschool's words.

Wouldn't it just make more sense for the Democrat to tell the whole story or not print anything until it has all the facts in order? Printing a little something just to have something out creates too much confusion and anxiety.

Posted by Babydoll601 (anonymous) on May 20, 2008 at 9:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

no hopefloats the victims were not the ones in the first accident they were in the second accident.

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on May 20, 2008 at 9:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

So was the second accident caused by the first accident? As in blocking traffic or trying to see what was going on or something?

no Freedom42 the first accident did not cause the second accident. it happen farther down the bridge.

I wonder if the above mentioned cars, the red mustang and the gray mustang, are the same cars that have been frequently spotted speeding across the bridge early in the morning. They turn off at the yield sign just after passing the Isle of Capri hotel headed towards Vidalia. They speed across the bridge side by side and their destination each morning is Vidalia High School. Several times it has given me a horrific scare. Has any one else noticed this by chance.

Posted by Babydoll601 (anonymous) on May 20, 2008 at 11:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No sorry4ya, the driver of the Gray Mustang is a grown lady.

Posted by NCSugaBowl (anonymous) on May 20, 2008 at 11:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Sounds like to me cameras need to be installed on both ends of this bridge as well as at mid way points. Perhaps if these were in place the current activities on this bridge would stop all together. At the same time accurate information about accidents could be documented and used to help to solve such cases.

Oh well in due time those people shall fall from their high perches and they will have to answer for all their activities.
I just think cameras would solve alot of these issues that are taking place on that bridge. I mean try to out run a video of you breaking the law...it is not all that easy.

Posted by amazedattheignorance (anonymous) on May 21, 2008 at 12:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I totally agree and think that would be an excellent thing for our tax dollars to be used for. However, the powers that be in this part of the country have other, more pressing concerns, apparently, than the safety of it's citizens.

Posted by linenbreeze (anonymous) on May 21, 2008 at 12:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)

itsallaboutme I don't recall apologizing to you!

Posted by NCSugaBowl (anonymous) on May 21, 2008 at 12:09 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Well perhaps when one of theirs gets hurt or God forbid killed due to this foolishness they will start to think differently. They will want answers PDQ. Then you shall see changes.

Posted by oldschool (anonymous) on May 21, 2008 at 12:48 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I thought the new bridge did have cameras along with the riverwalk that is monitored by the VPD. I forgot about that until now. That is how they knew that the lady was trying to jump from the bridge that time.... mmmmmmmm wonder if it captured any of the wreck?

Posted by amazedattheignorance (anonymous) on May 21, 2008 at 1:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Hmmmmmm.....good thinking oldschool. What do you want to bet that for some 'reason', it failed to capture the accident?

Posted by overthehill60 (anonymous) on May 21, 2008 at 1:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I still think it's too much of a coincidence for that much to happen an 4:00 in the morning with out some kind of a connection. Especially when they all had come from the same bar & all were drunk.

Maybe I overlooked it, but has the red Mustang been found?
