Councilman walks out of Ferriday special meeting
Published Wednesday, May 28, 2008
FERRIDAY — A 2-1 vote by the Ferriday Town Council to fly Mayor Gene Allen to the Miss Black USA Pageant next month was too much to bear for Councilman Jerome Harris.
Harris, who represents the dissenting vote, abruptly left a special called meeting on Tuesday after council members Johnnie Brown and Gloria Lloyd approved the use of city funds to fly Allen to Las Vegas. While in Sin City, Allen will support Miss Black Louisiana Tiffany Monique Lloyd, the daughter of Councilwoman Lloyd.
“I let my anger outrule me today,” Harris said. “I walked out the meeting because I didn’t like what went on. I believe in being fair with the Town of Ferriday. We need to be honest with the community about where their money is going.”
Harris believes Allen should pay for his travel arrangements and questions whether Lloyd’s vote is valid, citing a conflict of interest.
“(The vote) shouldn’t go anywhere. It’s a dead vote,” Harris said.
Lloyd declined to comment on her vote. Councilman Brown also declined to comment.
“I commented all that I’m going to comment at the meeting,” he said.
When asked about the meeting Tuesday afternoon, Allen failed to mention the vote, but did mention Harris’ hasty exit left the council without a quorum to proceed with other business. Attempts to reach Allen about the vote Tuesday evening were unsuccessful.
The council was to discuss the 2008-2009 fiscal year budget and the engagement of a certified accountant, according to the council’s agenda.
Harris said he preferred for the council to make a donation to Lloyd’s daughter, but his idea was disregarded. The councilman said he regrets he allowed his emotions to stunt the meeting.
“The city of Ferriday is first in my heart and I work to make sure things go right on that board there,” Harris said.

Not even his daughter..what up with that? If I were the mother/councilwoman i would say What? Why don't they fly her up there? I say vote NO! I thought Glen McGlothin was mayor.

At the regular meeting two weeks ago, Ms. Lloyd presented a motion for the mayor to take the trip on the town's dime. That motion failed for lack of a second.
Allen brought the issue back on to the agenda for the special meeting to try again. Mr. Harris was very rudely treated by Allen during the discussion that ensued between Allen and Harris because of questions Mr. Harris was asking. Those questions needed asking!!!
Good for you Mr. Harris!!! You can bet come July 1 that the aldermen for the Town won't be so rudely treated by the incoming mayor elect!!

Maybe the Attoney Generals office will get wind of this. I would certainly think Mrs Lloyd's vote would be a conflick of interest.
My hat goes off to Mr. Harris.

The question is, if it were a Miss White USA event would the mayor also attend that? My guess is no!

And Gene Allen wonders why his people didn't re-elect him?????? Way to go Mr Harris...I bet your people remember this come next election, and you win unanimously in your district!! I agree that maybe a donation to Ms. Lloyd would have been more appropriate, but to pay the mayor's way?? Sorry, sounds like something fishy between the mayor and Gloria Lloyd!! Bet Gene's wife has something to say about him going to sin city without her with another woman!

What a JOKE!!! Mrs. Lloyd should not have had a vote in the matter at all. Of course she is going to agree that the city of Ferriday pay for Allen's trip. Come on now. As poor as the town of Ferriday is, you all have extra money for a Sin City trip. It's not Cheap in Vegas. By the way it did not say if Allen's wife would be attending the trip. I say to Mrs. Lloyd, if you want your daughter to participate in extra activities start doing fund raisers early. I don't think the town would mind helping out. Bottom line, PAY FOR THE TRIP YOURSELF!!!!

Vidalianative. That is just ridiculous. Everyone knows that a Miss White USA contest would just be racist.

It is because of actions like these that racism will never die. WHY can there be a Black Miss America, Black Colleges, Black this and that, but the minute you have all White that and this - it is racism? If we want to be truely one, then we have to get rid of the all Black thing.

The people of Ferriday pay for the mayor's trip to LV??? What a joke!!! This is the same guy who fired a policeman for stopping his wife and giving her a speeding ticket last year. Which he, by the way refused to pay and had dismissed!!! Don't worry people of Ferriday.... he won't be in office much longer and we can get rid of the crooked people he has in his "pocket" too. Lloyd... shame on you!!! You are no better then he is. Kudos to you Mr. Harris... you definitely have my vote!!!!!

This is INSANE!!! I'm not racist, so let me say that first. But Freedom42, I concur. When is it going to stop? I've watched the Miss USA Pageant and there are black people in it...why is it necessary to have a Miss BLACK USA Pageant? Are there white people in it? Same for the Miss Black Louisiana...think of the money being spent on these ludacris events!!! And Ferriday is probably one of the poorest cities in our area-why the hell would the town pay for this trip. Good for you Mr. Harris!!! If I voted in Ferriday I'd vote for you!

I agree with everyone else. Mr. Harris you definitely did the right thing! Its good to see someone who puts his town first!
Gene Allen, Gloria Lloyd, and Johnnie Brown should be ashamed of themselves. But it is apparent that they are not and are adament that Allen have this trip paid for by the taxpayers of Ferriday. I guess they see it as a "farewell" trip. Farewell to Allen, farewell to the crooks in his pocket, farewell to the Gene Allen Era in Ferriday!!!! Things are gonna get better here in just a several short weeks!
Now, as for this Miss Black USA pageant, Where do I sign up???? I'm white, but if they deny me entry into it then they are racist. So they can't deny me can they? Didn't think so! That's a total crock and it should be shut down. UGH!!!!

As an African American and a tax-paying one to boot!
The actions of the city council were "WRONG" and very "WRONG." An obvious attempt to derail amd mislead the citizens of Ferriday.
I would bet on the heels of this little episode that this is not an isolated event. Dig deeper Ferridians and you are sure to find even more shady activity
Ms Lloyd shame on you and Mr. Allen what about your intergity and commitment to your job as mayor?
You should have been the first to veto the suggestion when the idea first came across your desk...unless you had a hidden agenda which in this case seems quite clear and that was
an opportunity to engage in a free trip to Las Vegas at the expense of your townspeople.
"What a tangle web we weave when at first we try to deceive"
and readers, you are right on target...if there were talk of a "Miss White USA" there would have been voice so loud, outrage would not be able to describe the action of people ....it's 2008 folks and there is no place for color ===merit is the new identity.

way to go Jerome, it takes guts to stand up for whats right. i am very disappointed in johnnie brown, he knows better.
This has nothing to do with Miss Lloyd , i wish her the best and hopes she wins. I hope the AG does look into the action of Gloria Lloyd and Gene Allen if they got thru with
using our town funds for personal vacations.

I hope the little girl wins, too, but gooooodness...Gene Allen and Mama Lloyd have scandalized her trip now!!!! Whatever happened to taking up donations pre-trip? Instead of the council donating money to help Tiffany Monique Lloyd go to this pageant, they give it to Gene, instead...sounds like it's all about the free trip and not MissTiffany Monique Lloyd after all. Gene is a self-serving, egotistical rat bast*&^.
Mr. Harris...you are a wonderful example for others to follow. You will be blessed sir.

Black folks are only 12% of this country's population, and if they want to have a Miss Black USA pageant to represent their 12% then.... what is the big deal? At least they are not raising hell because the Miss USA pageant doesn't have enough black folks. It could be handled alot worse. Just leave it alone. It's the same reason there are black colleges. So what?
But Gene Allen SERIOUSLY wanted the city to fund a trip for him to go to Vegas. That is just too ludicrous for comment.

I am very proud of you Jerome, one thing about you, you are definite a honest and straight to the point guy. You have always pointed out the wrong in this town and the crooked people in this town, you have always looked out for Ferriday. If they had more people like you this place would be better off. As for the comments about racism. Whenever a african-american comment about racism on anything pretaining to a white, then you all say you are tired of blacks pulling the race card. Well seems to me like the comment that started the race issue pretaining to this article came from a white, which I don't see why it was brought up in the first place. But, since it was I would like to say, I am tired of you all pretending that racism didn't exist back in the day, So when the Beauty Pagent first came about you & I know blacks wasn't accepted the way we are now. So yes, someone started the Miss Black American Pagent and it continue on. The person I'm sure that started it did not have it in their mind to discriminate against the whites they just wanted to give our girls a chance to have the same thing. Stop trying to make everything about race. It is getting very sickening. As for the Black colleges again blacks was not welcomed in the white colleges and again the black race wanted education for their kids and our kids today. This is about Gene Allen and Ms. Lloyd which I agree is wrong for them to want the taxpayers to pay for this trip. Ms. Lloyd should not have been allowed to vote. So please keep it about that.
Posted by overthehill60 (anonymous) on May 28, 2008 at 12:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I see this as a racial issue. I guess next Al Sharpton will be visiting the beautiful, clean town of Ferriday. Anytime something doesn't go right for a black person they turn to their backup. Why can't they stand on their on two feet?
Why would the tax money have to pay for the trip when there are so many eyesores in Ferriday that need repairing. Years from now people won't even remember this girl if she wins, but Ferriday will still look the same & even worse.
Posted by bear30 (anonymous) on May 28, 2008 at 12:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I agree that this is about race. If Glen McGlothin tried to get the town of Ferriday to pay for a trip to an "all white" function all hell would break loose. As for your comments Daris, as everybody has evolved so should the black community & you should quit trying to separate yourselves from the rest of us. That is all you are doing. It may have started out as a way for blacks to have a way to do things, but I feel that if blacks, latinos & whites have pagents together then there should not be any black, latino pagents seperate. Whites are not having an exclusive pagent or collages are we? Now, this does not suprise me in the least bit that Gene Allen wanted Ferriday to pay for his way. He is a snake in the grass & has no shame. All I can say is good riddance to Gene & I hope that I never have to be around that waste of space ever again! Keep it up Harris, you did the right thing & thank you. The Lloyd woman should not have been able to vote. Just a question is the town of Ferriday paying for her way there?
Posted by lilredhead (anonymous) on May 28, 2008 at 12:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Not to offend anyone, but the Miss Black USA pageant was founded in 1986. If you may recall Vanessa Williams was the first African American Miss America and that was in 1984. So there was already an African American Miss America before the Miss Black USA pageant came into existence. On the other hand "Black Colleges" can not deny entry to a "White" applicant because they are white. As a matter of fact I know several teachers who went to "Black colleges and universities" because they were the minority and obtained special grants and scholarships. This is about what the mayor is doing or trying to do and not race. If it were a white mayor trying to get taxpayers to foot the bill for his trip to the Miss America pageant it would still be very wrong.

Way to go Mr. Harris! I guess since Gene Allen won't be in there for long, he's trying to suck Ferriday dry before he leaves! That town needs that money, instead Gene Allen will be out on the town on the Vegas strip!! Probably gambling away some of it. And you are all right when you say if she was white, he wouldn't be going. He should pay for this himself. It's HIS vacation!! What a shame! And to think we voted for him!!

I usually don't come back and comment, when I see that you can't get small minded people to understand. But to bear30 I am not trying to seperate myself nor the black community from the rest of the people. You see you took what I said the wrong way. I'm not making excuses or anything, it's just as much as the whites with racism than blacks. Again, I not going to go back and forth with you or anyone for that matter. Instead of talking about the same old thing, do something else "PRAY FOR A BETTER COMMUNITY" and stop pointing fingers as to who is a racist.

Just to throw my one and a half cents in...
When Ms. Kimberly Morgan, The Miss Mississippi who competed in the most recent Miss America competition was a student at Alcorn, she won the title of Miss Alcorn by her MERITS, her GOOD NATURE, and the good person that she is. These are personal attributes that span farther than just ones' immediate culture. Miss Morgan later entered for Miss Mississippi among young women of various races, WON, and then went on to compete in Miss America. She didn't need shady contributions, she didn't need her ethnicity catered to, she went forward, asserted herself and reached farther.
Ms. Tiffany Monique Lloyd was also elected Miss Alcorn State University at one time, and like Miss Morgan, is a very beautiful girl. That aside, Miss Morgan aimed for a less secure, more risky target. She reached outside of a zone in which she only had to appease a particular audience, and she moved out into EVERYONE'S spotlight. I am not taking away from Miss Lloyd's acheivement, I am sure she was up against a lot of competition and I am sure she is heading to Vegas to be up against a lot more. I think Miss Lloyd's mother has done much to tarnish her daughter's accomplishments with this self-serving, underhanded activity and to a degree, has reinforced negative, stereotypical beliefs about black-only organizations.
Ms. Lloyd's mother should be ashamed of herself.

I'm a Ferriday native and this just goes to show how really bad things have gotten in Ferriday. Seems the mayor called a special meeting but only invited three of the alderman so he could get a quorum and get his pet trip through with a 2 to 1 vote. And also the fact that he isn't going to be mayor but for a few more days. What a disgusting scumbag. Go back to your lake house with Mrs. Lloyd and count the money you've stolen from the city. Hopefully Glen will rescue the town.

What the hell does all of this have to do with the fact that there is a Miss Black America Pageant, Black colleges, Black this and Black that? This article is about a mayor who want the city to fund his traveling expenses to see the pageant. This is what everyone should be complaining about, not the fact that these things you all are agruing over are in existance. There will always be reasons why one race seems to have more than others, and the real reason why racism won't die is because people from other races have a problem with what's going on within the races. So what, if we have Miss Black America Pageant? Hell, we didn't organize it. They may have started it to raise money just like any other beauty pageant. The same goes for Black colleges. Enough with this racism "$h!+".
This article is about Mayor Allen wanting money to sponsor this pageant. Since he is the mayor, he should know the economical and financial statis of his city. If he knows that the city can't afford it, then he should sponsor Ms. Lloyd himself.

The only trip Ferriday should pay for Allen is an all expenses paid trip to prison for embezzlement and misuse of city funds, along with Brown and Lloyd.
I agree with others that can read between the lines, seems like Allen and Lloyd have an affair heating up, and want to get away to Sin City together, with Allen receiving funds from the city and him paying both their way. Totally Revolting and I hope Allen's wife divorces him and takes everything he's got.

it's not racist to complain that black people have their own entertainment television or their own advancement programs, or even their own beauty pageants - what is RACIST is that if it were reversed, THEN IT WOULD be LABELED as racism. THAT'S WHAT BOTHERS ME.
drawpaintsing: you said people need to stop with the racism - I wasn't BEING racist, I was complaining of it!!! And if you are willing to let other people have stuff that you can't have JUST BECAUSE they are a different color than you, then you're only contributing to the problem.
Black people have a LOT more help with getting into schools AND MORE, than a white person can get. THAT sounds racist to me!! If I were black, I would think it was making my race look stupid if they could get into a school with lower test scores, JUST because they're black! I'd feel like they were calling my race dumb!

Wait for it....wait for it....Mayor Gene Allen proposes an advancement of $10,000 dollars to gamble in Las Vegas on the Town of Ferriday's behalf. Why not they have let him have practically everything else! Hey Allen don't let the door knob hit you in the a** on the way out!

I have seen an ok for air fare only! Anything else may need to be watched closely. You can get air fare round trip tickets starting around $425 and up.
Again, lets see what he turns in for expenses!

Hey daris I didn't say that you were racist either...the point that I was trying to make is that to end racism or certain people of races feeling left out we have to also end things only for blacks. You have to admit that if whites started the wet channel(white entertainment television) the black community would have a fit. Also my other point was that the "great town of Ferriday" would never agree to send Glen, a white man, to an all white function! I do pray for a better town, but Gene has drug it down so bad I fear that it is past the point of no return. Just to let you know that I do have friends of all races. To end racism you have to quit trying to separate yourselves from everyone. I'm not trying to argue daris just to try to explain myself better. God bless.

Hey steve_o - who said anything about a round trip ticket. Leave his *-- in Sin City. Sounds like the perfect place for this guy and anyone else wanting to follow him! Hey mama Lloyd, want to stay too? Maybe Ferriday will pay for you a one-way ticket too! Sin City? Sounds like a good place for you both to start a new! Mrs. Lloyd, I certainly hope that your daughter has diginity to stand proud after this! Why is this trip so important that the Mayor had to attend anyway? Where does Mrs. Allen come into this plan or did she even know about it? Dishonest people you are.
Shame on all of you who voted on this trip as well as any past decisions made to benefit only yourself! Evil is within all of you. You made promises to obtain these positions and how many have you kept?
Congradulations to Mr. Harris. You did the right thing.

The point of my comment, and I think others, was to stop any ALL WHITE and ALL BLACK public activities. The Miss USA, Miss America, etc. are open to all races. Miss Black America is not. Alcorn, Jackson State, Grambling are all stated to be "Traditionally Black Schools", if we said that about Old Miss, USM, State "Traditionally White Schools", we would be labeled Racist. IF we are to get over the racist label we need to stop using the words black / white to describe anyone or anything.

oldschool - if we can't complain on the AG website, maybe the inspector general or legislative auditor will be interested.
http://www.lla.state.la.us/lla/complaint...
link says it's to report abuse of public resources or if you are aware of possible theft of public funds or property.

Let's make them aware of what's going on!

But Freedom, white people and other races, not only attend these Black colleges, they teach at them and administrate them as well. So what's your point? As for pageants, you are saying it is racist just because someone started one. So you just want it end, because of that? If they end Black everything, like you said in an early post, that won't solve this racism thing, because that is not the problem.

Burningstar, seems like to me you to what I said as a one-sided point. Whenever I mention "race", I speak towards "all the colors in the crayon box". If you feel that what you said wasn't racist, then I wasn't referring to you. I generally said that the article really wasn't about race issues. But, I guess you chose to respond that way. If you can read any other post I made about race, you will find that I dislike things that go on in my race, but I guess that doesn't matter to you. You made your point. It's not the Black race, as whole, fault that we get funding for anything. It just burns me up, because other races use "the ones that do" to stereotype me and others like me. Would all other races feel better if the Blacks would be cut off and out of everything? Go ahead and help the others races then. Then again, we will have to start our own everything, and this "racism" cycle will start all over, and it will be the Black people fault again. I guess I will have to take my low test score feel even more stupid then, since I am Black. As far as low test scores, I got the same on my test than the average white student, got the same college loan (that I have to pay back) as any white student, and make the same amount of money as average white person. As a matter of fact, everything that I do get from the government, I have to pay back. No, I'm not contributing to the problem, because I don't condone it. I'm just tired of being called out about it. Why did you chose to call me out anyway, because I wasn't the only who something to say about this? Since it is clear that everything wrong with racism is because Black people get more help than others, forgive me for thinking I can belong and blend in with a group of intellegent people (I'm talking about this forum). I guess, I'm only contributing to the stupidity and making my race look stupid. So goodbye, Natchez Democrat, for good.

SAD...... "The I have a dream speech " was one of the most heart felt that was written, I feel it has been taken out of context . Don't think the words "we shall over come" meant to overcome the white race and conquer . Think it meant to stand hand and hand, love one another and be equal, overcome the adversities during that era. I think its so sad that neither race can achieve something so simple, and that his followers /leaders can't get it right. Sad to know neither race will ever heal. We need black and white leaders that can get the message right....its so sad that everything turns into a race issue and always will.......wish we could just stop hating, but we never will with NAACP, BET, etc,, that purposely separate races.

DRAWPAINTSING: I want to highlight the fact that I did NOT say that YOU had a low test score because you were black.
I didn't even KNOW what race you are - and I do not care. As far as I am concerned, we're all the HUMAN race.. or that's what I thought.
I do not think that you do not belong or do not "blend" with other races.
I was simply complaining of ANYONE being treated better than someone else JUST because their skin is a different color. Since NONE of us CHOSE the color of our skin, or what race we would be born into!
I definitely don't think you should leave the forums over this.
I personally wish that EVERYONE here - all races included - would get better reading comprehension skills & have less confusion. I don't see how you were able to twist my statements SO badly!

Thanks for the link envyme, I just emailed a complaint to the Louisiana Legislative Auditor. I hope they look into it and do something about it. Thank God Glen won this time and that Narcissist Pig is on his way out the door.

Just an FYI. Did anyone notice that drawpaintsing used a capital B for blacks and a lower case w for whites. Interesting.

OMG, you are so right racehorse! Have anyone of you read the concordia sentinel? Gene Allen says in there that Ferriday should pay for all the board members to go & support Miss Lloyd. He goes on to say Ferriday supports Jimmy Swaggart "that has falllen from grace" & Mickey Gilley in Branson & Jerry Lee Lewis that has done nothing for Ferriday. The point that I have a problem with is that Ferriday has never paid for anyone to go see Jimmy Swaggart, Mickey Gilley or JLL. If Ferriday should pay to go see anybody it would be Mickey Gilley who has showed up everytime that sorry town has asked him to. As far as Jimmy Swaggart or crazy Jerry I could give a rats bottom about them & agree that they have done nothing for Ferriday except being born here & never coming back. Gene also said that he has served for 20 years & will still be a big part of Ferriday after July 1 because he owns the biggest business in Ferriday that is a business for the blacks. I guess he means the funeral home that looks vacant. Which makes me think of something else. Does anybody remember Gene getting into alot of trouble years ago because he was double selling his caskets? He would sell a casket have the funeral & then in the cemetary he would dump the body in the ground & resell the casket. The families of the departed didn't know of course. I just don't understand how anyone could ever use his services again! Gene enjoy the air conditioning while you can because its a pretty good bet your going where its hot when you depart!

I know I said I was done, but I'm not.
Racehorse, Honestly, I didn't pay attention to that! Thank you for pointing that out to me, but why are you trying to start something back up. I don't bother anyone, so don't bother me. Why is it that I am the only one who is being attacked at this, when I'm not the only one had an issue with this? Why wouldn't you point that out? Interesting!
Burningstar, I've received your email, and you are right. I hope one day everyone will understand each other, but I guess not. I misunderstood what you said, and you did the same with me.
I am not racist, but Racehorse is seemingly trying to make me one. Maybe you all agree.

I know you are not racist draws, neither am I. I guess I'm not being real clear, and for that I am sorry. But I feel that until we stop using the words black, white, yellow whatever to describe each other the differences will always be in front of us. Remember the big to-do about black history month? I still believe an ethnic history month would be more valid - then each child could explore their own ethnic history and LEARN about others. For instance what do you know about Welsh coal miners, which were some of my ancestors. I would personally be much more willing to learn about your ancestors and history, if you would be willing to learn about mine. And I don't mean you personally, just everyone I guess. For instance when the paper reports a crime, very often they report a black male. That puts a picture in our heads of a gangsta wannabe thug. If they say a white male, it paints a whole different picture. What if they said just simply a male person. What if we had the Peoples Entertainment Network? Not Black, Not White, just people? Hey I could watch Will Smith while you enjoy Kevin Costner movies. Guess I better quit rambling here. I hope I have made my position a little clearer.

Freedom, I wanted to make it clear to you that I meant no harm in what I said to you either. Instead, I get on here and read some attacks on me, and completely forgot to. I'm glad you didn't take it the wrong way. I know we can agree and disagree properly. I still think that this article was mainly about a mayor who wanted to use city funs to go on this bizarre trip. Yes, I commented on some other things about race, but generally. Instead certain people on here looked over that and attacked me for what I said about Black issues, oh wait, black issues. I'm sorry I even joined this forum.

DRAWPAINTSING: there's going to be annoying people (of all races) everywhere - some of them have even annoyed me so much that I can't even come on here very often because of the anger it makes me feel. Don't be sorry that you joined this forum. You're human and have opinions, just like the rest of us, and you have just as much right to be here and express them as much as anyone.
I was only trying to make a point, from my perspective - as you were, from your perspective. As were even the people who you felt were attacking you.
It's easy to take written words the wrong way - and then to feel attacked. Don't let this all keep you from voicing yourself.

Yeah the article was on the mayor, but you know how everything goes on this forum. I don't know if it is because we are in Natchez or what. Have a great night and keep writing - I enjoy hearing your opinion.

Well, I guess I have work on myself then, huh. LOL!
BurningStar, I extend an apology to you, because I think my misunderstanding started all of this. But, I don't usually act like this.
The mayor is still wrong. (This is for the people who say that we conversate on here.)
Posted by BurningStar (anonymous) on May 29, 2008 at 11:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)
YES - and back to the original subject - Yes - the Mayor was WRONG! They shouldn't spend Ferriday's money on that kind of "junk"! Ferriday needs the money too bad for the money to be spent on any kind of stuff like that!
And Drawpaintsing: no apology is really needed - I know that you were upset and just trying to get your own point across. I'm glad that you're still here. :-)

I found this interesting.

Surely Miss Lloyd wouldn't accept Gene Allen's offer to attend the pageant with her if her platform is on solutions to poverty. Considering the fact the money he is using to help fund his trip is being taken from a town with a large amount of it's people living in poverty. If Miss Lloyd is serious about helping finding a solution to poverty she should stand up to her mother and let her mother know it's wrong to use funds from a poverty stricken town to help someone fund their trip to go along with her.
