Children invited to big screen in Ferriday

Published Monday, June 2, 2008

FERRIDAY — In a throwback to its first incarnation, the newly reopened Arcade Theater in Ferriday will be showing movies for local children for free this summer.

“It’s got a drop-down screen and a wonderful sound system,” said Lynette Tanner, a member of the committee putting the program together. “We thought with the Arcade, why not? Everyone has such fond memories of going there to see movies growing up.”

The program, sponsored by local churches, will begin June 10 for children in first through third grades, and will be on Tuesdays until Aug. 5.

For children in fourth through sixth grades, the program will start June 13, and will be on Fridays until Aug. 8.

Free popcorn and drinks will be provided for the students.

The program will also have enrichment activities to expose the children to extracurricular activities they might not see in their everyday lives.

The enrichment activities will include music, nutrition, history, puppet shows, sports and relationship management information.

The enrichment activities will also correlate with the movies.

“If we show a movie about camping and the conflicts the campers ran into and how they resolved them, we might try to have to Boy Scouts come in and show what they’re about because they’re big into camping,” Tanner said.

An adult should accompany all of the participating students, and the movies will be age appropriate.

Ms. Lynette....I have experienced these little summer camps that you do, and I think they are great. BUT, I think you might want to reconsider this idea...keep the fun outside. I'm afraid the Arcade will get TRASHED!!

Great! And I thought I'd get to see some movies and rehash old memories! I was gonna bust up in the middle of those kids to see the show, but it looks like adults aren't allowed. Shoot!

Great idea, anyway! It's gonna be a crowded house. Free stuff for little kids. That's a good thing.

picture_music101, you say nothing for teens again! Why don't you work on an idea instead of putting down something that is good for the little kids just because a teen is not involved. Giving these young kids something to do that will be entertaining and keeping them out of trouble and showing them that there is someone who cares --- maybe these children will not grow into delinquents.

You have a brain - use it. What could you do to volunteer your time for an event for the teens. Get with your church or other organization and try something. You don't have to wait for someone else to do your thinking for you or someone else to blame. Get positive!
