Campaigning comes to an end Tuesday

Published Monday, June 2, 2008

NATCHEZ — Two months of door knocking, sign placing and hand shaking has led up to this moment — the general election on Tuesday.

Mayoral candidates Democrat Jake Middleton and independent Chick Graning will face off, and by Wednesday Natchez should have a new mayor.

Middleton defeated incumbent Mayor Phillip West in the first primary on May 6 by 206 votes.

Running on a platform of recreation, increased patrol officers, and improved infrastructure, Middleton said he hopes for good voter turnout.

“It’s a very important election,” he said. “It’s going to decide who the next mayor of Natchez is.”

Middleton said he has a good feeling about the turnout, that people are truly interested in the leadership of their city.

“You still want to feel like you have a say so in the Democratic process,” Middleton said.

A 16-year veteran of the board of alderman, Middleton said it’s been a good campaign.

“I would like to thank everyone that has been involved in my campaign,” he said. “I just can’t say enough about my campaign committee and how they’ve gone the extra mile.

“I feel my 16 years on the board and my years running my own business more than qualifies me to be the next mayor,” he said.

Graning wasn’t on the primary ballot since he is running as an independent.

With a platform centered on financial stability and improving the public school system, he’s ready to take on the challenge of being the city’s next mayor.

“I have not been subject to the influences of city government and have spent my time in team building and business success and I bring to the city government fresh new ideas, fresh new work ethic and a complete and total dedication to the citizens of Natchez,” Graning said.

“I have no political aspirations beyond helping Natchez.”

Graning is also running on the promise of open government and teamwork.

He said his campaign has been a good experience.

“I have run a clean, hardworking campaign with a group of fantastic people from all walks of life,” he said. “I have run the campaign in the same manner I would run the city and that’s with honesty, with integrity and being above board.”

Like Middleton, he hopes for good voter turnout.

“It’s extremely important for the future of Natchez that you get out and vote,” he said. “It is your honor, it is your responsibility and it is your privilege.”

Also on the ballot are the contenders for Wards 3 and 5.

Democrat Gwen Ball is running against incumbent Alderman Bob Pollard, who is running as a Republican, in Ward 3.

Ball’s platform has been focused on open government.

She also wants to make improvements to city infrastructure and the police department.

Pollard, who has served a single term on the board, has a platform based on making improvements to infrastructure and the police department as well.

Pollard said he would also like to form a strong, open line of communication with department heads, which would cause city government to run more smoothly.

For Ward 5, Democrat Mark Fortenbery will face Republican Charles Zuccaro.

In the first primary, Fortenbery had 48.9 percent and Frances Bailey had 40.1 percent.

The run-off on May 20 gave Fortenbery the Democratic win, with 58.1 percent of the vote, to Bailey’s 41.9 percent.

Fortenbery wants to seen Natchez become a town to which young people will return.

Zuccaro has said he can provide a different point of view to the board.

His platform involves improving streets, adding more policemen and firemen to the city’s departments and supporting city and county consolidation if it’s proven that it will save the city money.

He also wants to see a recreational complex built and he envisions allocating these funds by broadening the city’s tax base through new industry.

“You still want to feel like you have a say so in the Democratic process,” Middleton said

There is nothing like having that warm, fuzzy feeling, warranted or not is there Jake?

The grants that Jake is so proud of bringing to Natchez come through a private non profit called Southwest Mississippi Planning and Development. The board of directors of this private non profit include Darryl Grennel, Henry Watts, and used to include Sammy Cauthen. Cliff McCarstle is also on this board.

The SWMPD is charged with locating grants for economic development and tourism, among other things including oversight of itself.

The board of supervisors put McCarstle on the board of SWMPD in 2001 and then later, acting as supersvisors purchased land McCartslt owned at the Forks of the Road site with grant money from the Mississippi Department of Archives.

Experienced government knows how to do these things. If this is the way you think business should be done, then please vote for experience. Vote for Jake Middleton.

Middleton did not bring the grants, West did.

The city doesn't need more police and firemen. What it needs is to pay them a better wage so they are not in a constant training mode. Natchez problems stems from the unlimited number of red tape gangs that terrorize business from expanding or locating here. The government officials are overpaid because their pay was based on revenue when Natchez had IP, Armstrong, Diamond, JohnsMansfield and a booming oil field. They should be voteing themselves a pay cut until revenue and jobs return to the same level as then.

Good point, Scotty: I hope it matters to the voters that the current board of aldermen participated in an increase in salary before the police and fire dept. got theirs. Pollard, Middleton and Gray didn't vote for the raise but did vote for the suspension of the rule which forbids this action at a certain time in the calendar year. And they all participated in every illegal action with rarely, if ever, an objection or discussion. Of course, they didn't want the public to know it was against the law. Things will now be different, I hope!

Jake for mayor without any question. Granning has ZERO experience and has just now begun attending functions such as board meetings and chamber meetings. Jake has been attending these meetings for 16+ years, not just around election time. This is nothing against Granning, good guy. But the Democrats endorsement of Jake was spot on and completely justified. Their two resumes don't even compare. Only a biased fool would think otherwise.
VOTE JAKE 08!!

eagle1, did Butch, Hank, or Bucket attend ALL alderman meetings before they were elected? I don't know, but doubt they did. Attending those meetings does not qualify a person to be a good mayor. If I am a 'biased fool, so be it.
VOTE FOR CHICK on TUESDAY!

If Jake were so experienced, then why is our city in the shape it's in? I sure wouldn't be running on 16 + years 'experience'!!! Good grief! I think we need to continue with a clean sweep of city government. Vote Chick Graning, Mayor, TOMORROW!

Whomever we vote for, pray it will be the best choice . There is one other thing I would like to bring up . Our voting system. Why not,in the future, have every registered voted identified before they vote at the voting booth,by their fingerprint . It would be so simple is this day and time,I would think, to incorporate the voters fingerprint on their registration card to be inserted in the voting machine and then matched with the persons finger on the screen before the individual could actually vote . I would think that would be a great way to eliminate voter fraud . Without the card you don't vote . Everyones fingerprint would be on file and could also be used by the law enforcers to help catch the criminals . As things stand now its up to poll workers to challenge someone if they think that person has a felony if the poll worker even thinks that person doesn't have the legal right to vote . We desparately need a new and improved way to fight voter fraud . It is costing us too much money and time .

Chick Granning is related (by marriage) to most of the blue-hairs in town. What does that tell you? Should be an ear full? Vote Jake in there and you won't regret voting in 08.

natchezadvocate.... Jake pretty well had his hands tied until the voters voted in new officers to help him out. In the short time the newbies have been there they have made a very impressible start and will continue to do so. The newbies will get Natchez back where it should be. They will see Natchez restored to the good government it once had and give us the dignity we deserve.

Then we should have them vote again, Enkikur . I don't believe in giving up,do you? What was their argument against voter ID? I don't remember.

Posted by eagle1 (anonymous) on June 2, 2008 at 1:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

uh, last I checked NATCHEZADVOCATE, the city is in GREAT shape and the things happening around town now are incredible. Where do you live???? Hotels are being built for a reason, casinos are locating here for a reason, a prison is being built here for a reason, Rentech is locating here for reason. Wake up, REALLY GOOD things are happening right now and people like you refuse to acknowledge them.

Also, OLDERTHANDIRT, being a football player does not qualify one for mayor either, nor does being an insurance salesman, both are a dime a dozen. Sorry if seeing Graning at these meetings out of nowhere(Chamber included) right at election time seems a bit insincere.

Jake runs a successful business (actually employs people) QUALITY 1, and he's been in city government for 16 years QUALITY 2. A vote for Graning is based on friendship. A vote for Middleton is based on experience (and friendship).

It had something to do with being unfair because some people can't read destingy, if I remember right. Getting the id would intimidate them and make them not want to vote.

destiny, there are some people in Adams County who want to change the way water rates are set. Right now, water rates are under the control of the Public Service Commission but if these people have their way that will change and the new agency can charge whatever it wants. Right now rate changes have to be voted on. The new way the voters have no say. Would you vote for any of the people who want this to happen?

who is for this?

Posted by EnKiKur (anonymous) on June 2, 2008 at 3:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The fact is fire, it has already been done. Everyone in city and county government had to know about it and allowed it to happen. Some were directly involved, like the board of supervisors. Some indirectly involved but still did not tell the people what was being done. They are going to increase water rates, sewer rates, and waste disposal and the people won't have an say at all.

Posted by fire39212 (anonymous) on June 2, 2008 at 3:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

well ain't that just great....So Jake knew and Chick will be in the blue haired ladies pockets..hhmmmm.....Who to vote for....

Posted by EnKiKur (anonymous) on June 2, 2008 at 3:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

They all had to know. I don't know about Chick. It is possible he knew. What's more, this new agency is going into the concrete making business too. It can take any land it wants in Adams County and mine sand and gravel. The only reason for that is to make concrete for something the rest of us haven't been told about.

And even worse, this new agency is a federal agency. Control of water, sewage, waste disposal, and sand and gravel in Adams County has been put under federal control by the local politicians.

destiny, just what blue hairs am I kin to? what difference does it make? if you have to judge me by the people you THINK i'm kin to, you're having to look pretty deep for things to criticize!
re the new water, sewage, etc., agency, I had no previous knowledge of it. sounds like " those in power" should have known and fought the whole idea. sounds very socialistic to me.
In answer to all this talk about experience ( my opponents only real claim to fame), who can tell me how many mayors in the history of Natchez began their mayoral duties WITH experience,i.e., were members of the board of aldermen before becoming mayor? my guess is very few.
eagle1--most football players of my era were required to complete rigorous academic requirements along with football, at least at my school. the vast majority of my team mates have become very successful businessmen, as have I. I must assume this was also true at U.S.M.?
To say the least, we had to work a good deal harder than most other students, and this has been helpful in later years. My coaching experience was "team building" at its best, and successful insurance sales people are not a dime a dozen. anyone who would make a careless statement like that is pretty irresponsible.

Mr. Granning, how do you feel about hiring prison labor to work in Natchez? Is contracting with the prison also part of your plan? Mr. Middleton says that hiring prison labor will save the city $200,000.00. Does that mean he will be laying-off current city employees who are now doing the same work that the prison laborers will be doing?

In balancing the budget for the city of Natchez, would you consider having all city officials use their city vehicles only for city business and park the vehicles during their off hours and use their own vehicles to and from work, including yourself?

I must have been out of the country too, because I don't understand what jack is talking about. I thought Tommy Ferrell was a good sheriff. I don't know who Hazel is, or Willie B, but I have heard of Chuck Mayfield. I don't recall hearing anything bad about him tho. I really doubt that Tommy would go to the voting booth to make sure his deputies voted in a certain way, but they may have voted republican to help keep Tommy in office in order to make sure they kept their own jobs. You do realize that when the current Sheriff was elected he brought in his own and let Tommy's deputies go on unemployment.

Peace007...I'm with you...jack, your statements, innuendos, comments or whatever you want to call them are absolutely ridiculous. I'm sure Chick hopes that Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Libertarians and everyone else votes for him...just how does that tie into Tommy Ferrell and Chuck Mayfield?...it doesn't, but I will also say that Tommy was a good sheriff, he and Chuck Mayfield were and are highly professional lawmen. It is not uncommon for a new sheriff to clean house with all new deputies. A sheriff, unlike a police chief, is directly and personally responsible for the actions of his deputies, by law. He must make sure that he has confidence in them. It is also important that they be politically allied so as to minimize internal friction. I don't blame Ronnie for that, but it doesn't mean Tommy and Chuck weren't good people or good lawmen...they just lost an election.

It is obvious that you're a Ronnie fan and a Jake fan, but for heaven's sake man, don't take this into the gutter with a bunch of BS.

Wow chuck Mayfield huh......

I think letting the prison labor do some work is great...Why shouldn't they?? We have to work for our food, medical, dental, housing,tv etc why shouldn't they?

Still worries me about the blue haired ladies though..Because blood is ALWAYS thicker than water....I was liking Chick too... I don't like the way he answered Destiny though kinda sounds like a smarta@@...Glad this came out before tomorrow..

Yes, I don't mind leaving my "city car" at the job. Might create parking problems, though. Do you have any ideas as to how we can solve that problem?
I answered the prison labor question earlier in some detail.
jack, some one fed you a crock re hazel and tommy ferrell. you need to check your in formation before you talk about it. they are good friends, but I prefer to choose my people via standard interviewing and personal research methods.

I don't like the idea of those prisoners taking jobs away from the folks who are now doing those jobs. Will 6 people be let go? Is that where the $200,000.00 saved figure came from? hmmm, I wonder who will be next in line to be replaced by prison labor; the office clerks at the court house; the water meter readers; the sanitation personel? The one who escaped in Concordia Parish was working at a local lumber store. Will our local hardware stores be hiring prison labor soon?

Enki, if the reason people don't have to show voter identification is because they can't read, then maybe people who can't read shouldn't be allowed to vote. How do they know who they are voting for, if they can't read? Maybe that would be an incentive for them to learn. If my older friend, whom doesn't drive or have a birth certificate, has to have a photo identification card in order to continue receiving Medicaid benefits, then people who vote should have to prove who they are with picture identification. People who can't read can get a picture identification card down at the MS Highway office where they get drivers license. Not requiring photo identification is just some slick trick being used for political gain, because we have to show a picture ID for everything else. One thing for sure people who can't read aren't reading this so I shouldn't have harmed anyone with what I just wrote.

Chick...the "promised jobs" BS was obviously a plant meant to put you on the defensive...I think the bloggers here are too intelligent to fall for that older than dirt political ploy.

As for the parking dilemna, it's really not...the parking laws must be enforced, STRICTLY, making it too harassing for the owners and employees to play the musical chair game with their vehicles...it will also require leadership, which I know you've got in abundance, to convince them that parking in the lots the city already has will be better for all of us so that shoppers can come park conveniently. The best argument for this is the reason most people go to a mall...the parking is convenient to the shopping, if we block off parking spaces we make it inconvenient. Appeal to their greed, if we are less lazy we will be richer!

Jake has been in office for 16 years and what has he done in that time? What major project has he been responible for bringing to Natchez? He has been the Rec chair and do we have improved facilities, more opportunities for our children? He has the same problem Sue had....experience working against him because his lack of initiative and leadership during that period. Jake also is not decisive...he doesn't like confrontation nor will he deal with it directly, which is sometimes necessary. He is a good person but I don't think his "experience" card is an advantage. I don't know Chick well but I appreciate his upfront attitude. We DON'T know what kind of leader he is but we DO know Jake's leadership abilities....I'd rather go with the unknown. Just my opinion.

Also, on the issue of who secured the grants, most of the city funding that is grant-related can be attributed to Brett Brinegar, the city's grantwriter who is responsible for millions of dollars coming into the city. She is by far the most valuable asset in city government.
