Parish inmate escapes from shop

Published Tuesday, June 3, 2008

VIDALIA — An inmate trusty working as a mechanic in the Concordia Parish Correctional Facility’s auto maintenance shop escaped Monday morning, according to Sheriff Randy Maxwell.

Damon Henderson, 33, who was in jail for theft, is described as a white male, with brown eyes and brown hair. He is said to be 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighs approximately 200 pounds.

Authorities believe that Henderson may have been picked up by someone he knew after he left the jail. The driver is believed to have been in a brown, Chevy pick-up truck. Henderson was last seen wearing a red button-up shirt and blue jeans.

Maxwell said it is believed that Henderson will ultimately be located in the Walker, La., area where his girlfriend resides.

Warden Russell Butler said all area law enforcement agencies here and in south Louisiana have been notified. Henderson’s information has also been entered into the National Crime Information Center’s database.

According to prison officials, Henderson had been working on a van Monday morning. When that work was complete, he was seen going into the men’s restroom. Officers noticed that he was gone at about 9 a.m.

He was sentenced in New Iberia on the theft charge. He was placed in jail Jan. 18 and was due to be released in October 2010. He had been working in the auto shop for about one month.

And he wasn't even wearing inmate clothing? sheesh.

That was my thought also peace007....Is this the same one that went to find his girlfriend not tolong ago? But, you know there isn't anything they can do if they find him but, bring him back no extra charges cause they didn't charge the one that got away right before election... If they do looks like he could fight that on discrimanation (sp)

That escaped inmate is doing a job that a law abiding citizen could be doing. If they had found him something to do inside the fence, he wouldn't have escaped. Why can't they make automobile tags like they used to? Randy acts like it's no big deal since he "probably" went to see his girlfriend, but in reality, he may be doing something much worse. I can't believe that work release prisoners don't have to at least wear a prison uniform to make them stand out like a sore thumb! Oh, excuse me, prison trustees, trusted to work outside the prison, should at least have to wear prison clothing. (that was for you nit pickers).

People, you better wakeup before an inmate gets your job, and you get to stand in the unemployment line. Inmates, the new slave labor...they don't work free, but they do work cheap.

If im not mistaken whoever employees them gets some kind of insenitive to employee them..In jackson they work at the drivers lic place....Dumping the trash etc..but, they also have bright orange jumpsuits on.

I don't like the idea of those inmates working outside the prison, while so many law abiding folks are needing employment.

Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on June 3, 2008 at 12:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

He's been gone since 9 a.m. and we get notified at midnite, 15 hours late. He could be at Dimples or Dock Big Loves right now, wearing a red shirt and jeans, blending in with the crowd and dancing with your daughter, and hopefully not with one of mine.

fire, that one who escaped prior to the election, but the news was withheld until after the election, is he still working outside the prison fence?

Posted by fire39212 (anonymous) on June 3, 2008 at 12:52 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't know but, wouldn't doubt it... I do know they said no more charges would be brought against him being he just went to see his girlfriend..lol....Being there was none against him he was gone for how long? Oh yea it was just that long that we didn't know about it....I don't see how you can bring extra charges against one but not all...

Isn't the place the last runner was from? Why is it always a girlfriend situation? The SO needs to step up and do their jobs and guard these inmates.

Maxwell said it is believed that Henderson will ultimately be located in the Walker, La., area where his girlfriend resides.

Someone commented previously in regards to inmates working in Natchez to keep the trash and byways clean that they wear normal clothing so they would not be a "standout" to tourists coming and going --- geesh --- not everyone is going to be pleased; but inmates should have prison or the black/white stripes or orange jumpsuits so they can be identified.

Hope they locate this guy soon. Girlfriends/boyfriends can be so blind!

The clothes were the first thing I noticed in the article. Well... I didn't notice, it jumped off the page at me. We the tax-paying public have a right to be aware if prisoners are out in the general population. That means putting them in uniforms that readily identifies them. I don't see how you all stand this Concordia Parish.

This is becoming almost a weekly occurence. Maxwell needs to get a grip on his ship, this is getting rediculous!!!

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on June 3, 2008 at 8:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I thought RM said at the LAST escape (what...a month?) that security would be tightened with the trustee (trusty) people. He said things are going to change! Yall remember that? Obviously things didn't change, or they changed for the better for escapees!

Thats crazy!! The man was sentenced to 2yrs for theft and child molesters go scott free somethings not right with our system!! Sorry but thats the first thing that comes to my mind!! Those drug dealers will prolly get more probation and this poor fellow gets two years for theft, which would hurt your children? Drugs on the streets or There tv to be stolen?

Who did that song in the sixties?, early seventies?...."Tighten Up"....Junior Walker and the All-Stars? I should ride by the prison with that screaming out of my car speakers..."Do the tighten up..."

All inmate clothing other than work release has "INMATE" in large letters on them. Sure the shirt was red but it had this designation as well as the jeans.

Not excusing it, but escapes happen no matter who is sheriff, so, Movedon, move on. If your man would have won he still wouldn't be in office yet. And when he took office the inmates would be running everywhere paying back the favors to the hoodlums that supported him.

Yes, opinsab, there are problems with the system. Those problems exist all over the state. Changes need to be made in the judicial system. Make the punishment fit the crime. Contact your legislator.

I can not speak for the Sheriff's office, but I worked in Law Enforcement in Florida fo 13 years. (Jail Admin. and Road) The inmates are classified by the seriousness of their crime. Only minor crime inmates qualify for trustee. Due to the budget limitations, the Sheriff must cut costs where ever possable. Trustees should be supervised at all times due to them still being in jail. With my agency, we had corrections officers supervising the work crews or a agency employee responsible for their actions. If the trustee did not follow the rules they lost their trustee status forever and lost all gain time gained while in trustee status. Trustee programs are good but must be supervised at all times. At least while the trustee is working, you do get work out of them and they are not laying there planing their next crime. Jail is like school, as the major crilimals will teach the minor criminals to profect their trade. This is a proven fact.

Maxwell needs to make a lot of internal changes in policies, etc.!

Do the tighten up.

NO MAXWELL JUST NEEDS TO GET OUT!!!!!

Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on June 3, 2008 at 11:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)

What is a major crilimal? Just what exactly does it mean to profect a trade? Ok, I know, you were just being dyslexic.

LOL, kpage, that was good chicken soup for the soul...when life give you lemons...

that would be Archie Bell and The Drells (from Houston, TX) doing The Tighten Up.
Prisoners belong in prison. Let them do their "jobs" there.

Let's not blame Maxwell, he has his own personal problems worring how to pay for his new $700,000+ home on the lake now his new getaway home in Branson, Mo. Goodness know what else. He's just a poor little country boy trying to make his ungreatful family happy.
One reason he fights so hard to stay in office is because he knows the minute he is not re-elected his son will be arrested for his past drug charges that were conviently thrown in the garbage. So now his son has been taught the dirty ways of politics. Of course greed is the other reason to make his family enjoy the finer things in life that most of will never even be able to dream about.
Four year is not far & I can't wait to see this happy go lucky family in the gutter begging us peons.
Maybe then we will be able to keep the prisoners in jail where they belong!

everyone is talking about this guy that just walked off and he was a crook but what about the guy maxwell had fixing cars that killed his wife and her boyfriend they sent him to angola and maxwell brought him right back and that is where he stayed I think this is wrong and I know alot of others will agree with me.

Another escapee? What, exactly are you doing over there, Mr. Maxwell?

One more for the "GREAT HOPE" of Concordia Parish, what's this 3 or 4 in a row, Great Job Sheriff.

Posted by blablabla (anonymous) on June 3, 2008 at 6:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well if I remember this correct Maxwell was pointed at being a Murder himself that is why he has so much pull with everybody casue He pays they off and gets rid of the ones who know things about him that is casueing the problem. You know commonsense somebody in Baton Rouge ought to hear more about this man. NOBODY has really ever stood up to him....That is the PROBLEM. Well I am with everybody else cause as long as I am concered he can BURN in Hel-. And no I have NEVER been arrested or put in jail, I just know the dirty rascal.

So, are all you maxwell groupies enjoying the election results?
Does a hell of a job from his condo in Branson, doesn't he?

Posted by starla (anonymous) on June 3, 2008 at 9:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

He also stole a vehicle from the Ferriday Fire Dept.

Posted by COSomething (anonymous) on June 3, 2008 at 9:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

What do you people have against others making money? Sheriff Maxwell and his wife have worked hard and have been successful in business. The money they have made has been made honestly. Some of you people act like sociallists. You don't want anyone to have anything you don't have.

You foolish Lipsey fans still can't get over LOSING the election in the polls AND in the courts. You people are pitiful!!!

Blabla, are you now accusing a government official of murder? No, he doesn't need to get out. If you want to be away from him, maybe YOU should leave.

Consider (non)reason, he hasn't been in branson this week. Get your facts straight before you show your ignorance.

Wouldn't that be trustee not trusty? Small thing but...

Posted by emp (anonymous) on June 3, 2008 at 9:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Maybe it was a trusty trustee? Oh, maybe not. It is bad that another one escaped. At least it wasn't a murderer.

ROTFLMAO You almost had it COSomething and then you had to say this,

"Consider (non)reason, "he hasn't been in branson this week." Get your facts straight before you show your ignorance."

Nope not tis week!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA

Im am locking my doors to my cars and my doors to my shops tonight and making sure my windows are locked in my house......i would suggest everyone else do the same.

Posted by COSomething (anonymous) on June 4, 2008 at 12:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Good one, jammin. What I meant was that he was in Branson a few weeks ago. He was out of town this past week but he was not in Branson.

Posted by jammin1 (anonymous) on June 4, 2008 at 11:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)

That is just the point, COS, he is ALWAYS out of town, leaving his job to be done by someone who WAS NOT elected by the people to be the sheriff. That is only one of the reasons he needs to step down and go ahead and retire.

Posted by momof1 (anonymous) on June 4, 2008 at 11:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Is anybody surprised? This is almost a regular happening in Concordia Parish. Besides, it's not too hard to escape when you are given the same rights and privilages as most free citizens. After all, our taxpayer dollars are paying for a bed & breakfast. But, I guess it could be worse. Gene Allen could be sheriff. :-)

Posted by COSomething (anonymous) on June 4, 2008 at 2:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)

jammin, does that mean that President Bush should be holding a gun in Iraq? Have you also considered that some of these trips are job related?

Posted by jammin1 (anonymous) on June 4, 2008 at 3:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

LMAO, Bush has been in Iraq more time than Maxwell is spending at his office. You are comparing apples and oranges COS. If everything he is doing and all the trips he is making is so necessary for the job then why is he taking his friends with him that have nothing to do with the sheriff's office or law enforcement? He is a tired old man and needs to reliquish the reins to a younger more entergetic person who can get out there and tote the badge and gun and lead the deputies in fighting what is happening to our parish. He can't lead if he isn't here to do so!

Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on June 4, 2008 at 11:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It would be wise when you hire a contractor to ask if they hire prison labor or illegal mexicans, who will be working in your home.
