Maxwell takes sixth oath of office Tuesday

Published Wednesday, June 4, 2008

FERRIDAY — After 18 years as sheriff of Concordia Parish, Randy Maxwell took his sixth oath of office Tuesday night.

“This is just as exciting as the first time,” Maxwell said of being sworn in.

Being elected to public office is a big honor, Maxwell said.

“I feel very blessed and very fortunate to have sat in this chair for this long,” he said.

One the main reasons Maxwell feels so fortunate is the difference he gets to make in the lives of people and the community, he said.

“There’s very few occupations where you can do that.”

The need to help the community is something he also stressed to his staff in his speech.

“If the parish is ever going to change, ever going to move forward, it will be because of the people in this room,” he said. “Not because of the people on the corners, not because of the naysayers.”

He also stressed the importance of his family during his many election campaigns and years in office, especially his wife Roselinda.

“I would like to thank my partner in life, my wife who stood by me, who’s knocked on every door, fought every dog off and ignored every rumor.”

Maxwell also thanked employees who have worked with him for a long time. One of those was Ralph Hill who has been with the Concordia Parish Sheriffs Department since 1973.

“Ralph remembers me when I had all my hair and it was black and I remember him when he had all his hair,” Maxwell said.

Hill also expressed his appreciation for the work Maxwell has done over the years.

“He’s been a real good sheriff,” Hill said. “One of the best as far as I’m concerned.”

Fire and opinsab, you are the naysayers he was talking about.

Maxwell has done a lot of good for the parish. Anyone who has been here can see that. If you can't see it, you are blinded by your political views. Wipe your eyes and stop crying over the election.

Booooo!!! Yes I am a naysayer and with good reason. Another reason I wish to never live in Vidalia again.

Now why dont you get out of that chair you fell so blessed to be in and keep your inmates where they belong?

Why dont you people shut up! Maxwell has been a fine sheriff and probably the best one at that.(( fire39212))
You mention escapes...wake up and smell the coffee inmates escape on a regular bases ALL over the world.(( opinsab))
It doesnt need a certain age to be a cope.You just have to be a good cope.((mrgetitbig))I think he has done enough these years and why dont you just appreciate that...are you one of those mad about the last election.Gah let it go!((COSomething )) I agree!(( Gimmeabreak)) And for you...Vidalia probably wishes youd never live over here too!

I live in Vidalia & I for one am not proud of the work Maxwell has done. All he is looking out for his #1. I just wonder what kind of wheeling & dealing was turning in his head during his swearing in. I'm sure he wasn't thinking of a better idea to keep inmates in jail instead of letting them roam freely when & where they want. Maybe he was day dreaming about his new home in Branson. Or maybe he was thinking of another way to spend the tax payers money.
If he would close the machine shop & let a person that is supporting a family have the job things would be better. He would be putting the convict in jail where he belongs & allowing some workless person a job.

He has done MORE than enough to this parish, And you trying to bully people into SHUTTING UP is just a symptom of his influence. Maxwell is out of town alot more than he is in town. He leaves his job to be done by those not elected by the people to be the sheriff. The same people that do not have the qualifications to be a sheriff. Crime is taking over this parish and unless it is a drug bust every three or four months we seldom hear of anyting else being done to stop crimes or even investigate it. The situation in Ferriday can not just be blamed on GA and his Police Thug Force. The SO knows what is happening and does nothing!
People who hurt children still go about their daily lives and as long as they have friends in high places they never have to worry.
There is alot wrong in this parish and the buck stops with the sheriff. He needs to step down and go on and retire so he can enjoy his wealth that he accumilated from his "sheriff's" salary.

He has done more than enough TO this parish
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You just made Maxwell look like the crook he is!!!! I think you meant to say
He has done more than enough FOR this parish.
His "sheriff's" salary is high because he "under pays" the deputies! Sure he will retire on his "sheriff's salary" & his hard working deputies will still be struggling day to day to live on their measly pay.
Your comment & spelling cop "cope " have giving me a good laugh for the day.
At first I though I knew who you were but then after all the silly comments I knew it couldn't be because they had a better education than you seem to have had.
linenbreeze, was all of that directed at me? I was responding to picture_music101's comment and copy pasted it into the beginning of my post. LOL
And no, I meant what I wrote," He has done MORE than enough "to" this parish,"
18 years, 18 escapes? Is that close?
Anyone keeping count? And all of them were in no way dangerous, and going to meet their girlfriend.
How about when any of you maxwell sniffers have a family member gutted by one that escapes and IS dangerous ?
Politics won't help you then, will it?
Posted by rushinghjr (anonymous) on June 4, 2008 at 9:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Sounds like "dead people" voted for Maxwell again from New Orleans! I understand that they are still voting!
I was referring to picture_music101's comment!
When people finally get enough, they will demand to have to show their picture identification when going to vote. That will be the only way to keep those dead people from continuing to vote. Why don't they let us vote on whether or not to show proof of who we are when we vote?
Posted by jammin1 (anonymous) on June 5, 2008 at 12:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Here in La. we do have to show picture ID to vote, you just don't have to live here. LOL
