D-Day reminds us to say thanks
Published Friday, June 6, 2008
Natural disasters, wars and terrorist attacks are all worldwide events that strike a chord with everyone.
Everyone remembers where they were when the planes hit the twin towers. No one has forgotten the images in New Orleans after Katrina.
But, time does fade memories. And new generations are never as quick to memorialize events that happened before they were born.
Sixty-four years ago today thousands of Americans participated in the largest one-day invasion ever. On June 6, 1944, more than 130,000 troops landed in Normandy, France for D-Day.
The World War II battle left 3,393 Americans dead. Thousands more were injured or captured.
Life back home was changed forever.
Yet, today, much of the American population can’t remember the events because they weren’t alive.
Though the number of World War II veterans decreases every day, many are still living. To those who served, we owe a heartfelt “thank you,” and at least a pause in our busy day to remember the importance of the day.
If it weren’t for the soldiers who served, the sacrifices of their families and the bravery of all involved our lives today would not be the same. And that deserves remembrance.

I don't know where the Democrat got these numbers. But we lost over 4700 troops in just a few days. We have lost less than that in Iraq in over 4 years. Imagine if we would have had the same congress as today back then. The war would have been lost.

Try to thank a vet when you meet one, there are many out there and they would appreicate just a small nod in their direction. Remember, freedom is not free. Someone, somewhere is paying a price for it. ALL GAVE SOME, SOME GAVE ALL.

Add to those words Destiny - "Land of the Free, Because of the Brave".

The 3,393 troops lost was just in one day — D-day.
The numbers are from the National WWII Museum.
Hope that's what you were looking for.
Thanks
Julie

NAtchezEnema - Sound like you think its no big deal to loose 4000 service members in Iraq. I think the people that are serving this country would think differently, something tell me you have never worn the uniform.

Sounds like you are one of the ones that want to cut and run before the job is done in Iraq. No, I have never wore the uniform. I have had family that has served from Gettysburg to the Battle of the Bulge to Korea plus a lot of freinds in Iraq. They tell me in Iraq they like to kick ass and want to finish the job. The point is, like Gen. Patton said " America loves a winner and will not tollerate a looser". If we don't get tougher in the world we will have old folks in uniform fighting them here on our on soil like in the revolutionary war. And, don't go into the mind reading business.

One more thing, I have donated a lot of time and money to the V F W post in Natchez. I support my troops wherever they are. Regardless of why or who sent them there.

You think I am one of the one that want to cut and run?Funny, I support the troops by serving with them. Don't lecture me about how much time and money you give, while service members are putting their lives on the line. You seem so brave to volunteer others to fight, I guess you missed the call.

NatchezEnema...Mike8427...you both are right, stop arguing...I think we can all agree that all of the sacrifices of our military men and women in all our conflicts are tragic, but have also been necessary to preserve our freedoms...whether it was 4,000 on D-Day or 4,000 over the course of years of the Iraq War...all are painful and noble sacrifices...to be remembered and honored.

Mike, You have totaly missed my point. All I was saying is There is not enough support for the troops. More people want to bash them like the far left, hollywood, and people who hate bush. We had more people lost in 9/11 than at Pearl Harbor and our country was mad and wanted justice in WW2. No border of any country in the Pacific, Europe, or North Africa was going to stop us from getting it. We had more support back then than we do now. If we would have had the same congress and lack of support ( and hate) back then when D-Day, Iwo Jima or any other great battles were fought these same people would have said, bring them home, it's not worth all the dead. That is what got us into WW2 anyway. We could have sent maybe 50,000 troops and squashed Hitler in the mid 1930's. But no, we had to many people saying lets talk, or that is over there not here. Read about J.F.K's father and what he wanted before WW2 broke out. The same things today are the same things that happened before WW2. There is a great saying by one of our presidents. "Freedom does not afford itself to the weak or timid" The same things Iran's president says today are the same things Hitler said then and the world does nothing. Look at the slaughter in Angola Africa. Wonder where Mr Boxley or Obama is on that. America has saved the world twice. It will be a lot harder next time, and that next time is right around the corner. You know why? Ever heard the saying " history repeats itself" Well, it is, right in front of our eyes. And nobody wants to do anything about it. Especially Hillary or Obama. God bless our troops. They are buried all over the world. I don't see any other countries that have military cemetaries here in the U.S who have dead who fought for us.I have freinds in Iraq. And they want to come home, but they have service in their blood and desire to win first. I was not trying to demean our troops. They are the greatest out country has to offer. And I would have served if I would not have been born with a physical bone problem in my legs. God bless our troops.

NatEnm - I got your point "Sounds like you are one of the ones that want to cut and run before the job is done in Iraq"
You need to be careful who you are calling out, there are alot of vets and current military who come on here. We don't like to brag about what we have or haven't done, we just do what were feel is our obligation to our country.
