Children rock and roll to reading

Published Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Some might think loud rock and roll music and quiet libraries do not go together.

But if you asked the children who came to the Natchez City auditorium Tuesday afternoon to kick off the George Armstrong Library summer reading program, they would say "Why not?"

High Strung, a band that has gained the national spotlight for taking their loud, boisterous music to libraries across the nation, made a stop in Natchez to tell students why the library and reading is important and fun.

It didn't take long for that message to come across Tuesday. After the first few strums of the electric guitar and the first couple of beats on the drum set, the children were waving their arms and dancing to the music.

To top it off, the band and the children created thier own piece of music Tuesday afternoon, using lyrics created from some of their favorite library books.

For a taste of the song the children created and pictures from Tuesday's show go to the following link: Audio slideshow.

This can be good. I think this is a good start, but when the band leaves, what will have to do to draw the kids to read?

Anything that will introduce reading to young people is good . Sometimes something fun is all it takes to get them to try it. I say go for it !

A wonderful asset indeed!! I have signed my 6 and 3 year old up. Nothing more satisfying than to see children having fun while they are learning !!!!!

This was a wonderful event. The children had a great time. More information about our Summer Library Program can be found at http://www.naw.lib.ms.us/slp.htm.
Thank you to Ben for covering the event for us.
