Alderman-elect sues Ferriday
Published Wednesday, June 18, 2008
FERRIDAY — A Ferriday alderman-elect has filed a lawsuit against the town less than a month before he will become a sworn elected official.
Elijah “Steppers” Banks was elected District B alderman in February, but June 2 he filed a lawsuit against the town, Mayor Gene Allen and the board of aldermen seeking damages plus interest for an action the town took almost seven years ago.
The lawsuit, filed in the Seventh District Judicial Court, alleges that on Oct. 3, 2001, Banks received a letter from then-mayor and now mayor-elect Glen McGlothin immediately suspending the business and liquor license for his nightclub, Club Steppers, located at 211 E.E. Wallace Blvd.
McGlothin said Tuesday that the business was closed in 2001 because it was a public nuisance.
“After a number of complaints and after enough people called, I did revoke the business license, which the mayor is allowed to do,” McGlothin said.
The business was the scene of several run-ins with the police, including one where a police officer was shot, McGlothin said.
The suit alleges that the suspension of the business’ licenses was improperly executed, but it did not elaborate as to how.
The business’ occupational and liquor licenses were on the agenda for the Oct. 9, 2001, Ferriday board of aldermen meeting, but the aldermen did not re-issue the license at that time.
It is because the board of aldermen did not re-issue the licenses that the closure “continues to this day to cause damage to the petitioner (Elijah Banks) as the owner of Club Steppers,” the suit alleges.
Attorney Anna Ferguson, who was the town attorney at the time of the closure and who will serve as town attorney under the new mayoral administration, said she remembered the closure but did not feel comfortable commenting about the lawsuit until she officially becomes town attorney.
“I’ve never heard of an alderman suing the town before, but there is a first time for everything,” Ferguson said.
It is interesting that Banks waited seven years to file his lawsuit, McGlothin said.
“I think it would be hard for him to represent the town and sue them at the same time,” McGlothin said.
Banks could not be reached for comment.

This just does not make any sense. Like most of you are asking, "Why did he wait so late?" There may be more to this than meets the eye.
Go figure------

*msblackstallion*
If there were multiple Police calls, and an officer was shot there, it was revoked because of ***behavior*** NOT race.
People who constantly play the race card, due to their own ignorance or bias beliefs, are the ones who make America look bad, and the ones who do an injustice to society.
If the so called "redneck bar" is becoming a nuisance, and a danger, then by all means their license should be revoked as well. And btw, I am a highly educated woman of color!
Posted by daris (anonymous) on June 18, 2008 at 4:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I am also a woman of color and I agree with Zhena, it as nothing to do with race. I remember back when they closed down Stepper's it was a lot of fighting. Stepper's was on the front street than I use to be out there but in the club. Whenever it was close to time to go people were close to the street, they were loud and yes the police would come and ask them to go inside that made it worst. He got his on place shut down because he would not handle the situations that occured. If he would have had security maybe it wouldn't have been so bad. And as for the redneck bar comment. They have had clubs along the Vidalia highway and still have a couple I have never once past and their patrons was out sitting on cars, or standing out. If you're going to run a club at least run it properly and than you want have to worry about being shutdown. The night that that really cost Stepper's to shutdown they had a big fight I was going to my car they fought all out in the road, so he asked to be shut down by not controlling the situations.

How on earth is this guy going to represent the people who elected him? Why the 7 year interim? Was he just waiting for McGlothin to return as Mayor? Guess there is not a time limit for this sort of thing, but it truly does not make since to me.
If anyone remembers Morgan's in Natchez from the time I grew up here as a teenager, it was a place that was rough. My father dared his children to enter the place, but we did with another parent as guardian, but never went back. (That parent worked there, and Daddy did not find out about it until later.)
Thing is trouble was always brewing there and it was WHITE back then. Trouble is trouble regardless of color. When people do bad things outside to disturb the peace, they all get what they deserve. The owner is supposed to keep things orderly and quiet --- what kind of public servant will this guy make? Someone said recall -- can't you just picture it.

msblackstallion.......It looks to me like you're not here to offer any advise on how to alleviate the problems around Ferriday! Instead you post all these racist remarks that show your ignorance!
Steppers was a very bad place......A lot of underaged kids were allowed in there.....Just like at Dannys! There were fights every time the doors opened.....just like Dannys! Fights.....shootings....stabbings! Even a few rapes!
Is this the kind of place that you'd like to see opened again with Ferriday already in trouble?
Get off the racist remarks at every post and offer up some suggestions that are valid! Or find a forum in Dallas where you now live to post your racist remarks! We don't need that here!

Maybe someone will come along soon and delete all her posts! I'd hate for anyone outside of our area to read that diatribe of hers! She doesn't live in this area anymore and could really care less whats going on in Ferriday! I'm sure my black friends are having a good laugh at her expense! lol..........

BTW msblackstallion as someone who was victimized by someone of a different race than I am, I am still not racist. I am not going to judge a whole race due to one person. I am prejudice towards ignorance and there is ignorance in every race.

Good morning to all! I must agree with Daris and Zhena. this has nothing to do with race, msblackstallion. Just give it up. I could care less if a club's name is "The Blue Oyster". If it is causing trouble, then it should be shut down. Why would an elected official bring up something old like that anyway?

I think you are right, Sarge. "msblack" is definitely lacking in communication skills. It is probably senseless to try to respond to any of her comments because she most likely cannot comprehend the content of the article in the Democrat. Um-um, how sad.
