Man receives threats with gun
Published Friday, June 20, 2008
NATCHEZ — At around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, Darryl Merrick had a gun shoved into his back and a death threat in his ear outside the Travel Inn on D’Evereux Drive.
Charles E. Jones Jr. reportedly told Merrick, “I ought to kill you for snitching on my blood brothers,” Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said.
But, instead of killing him, Jones shoved the gun in Merrick’s mouth.
Jones then took Merrick’s wallet which contained $125 and ran toward Holiday Apartments, Godbold said.
Merrick knew Jones but had no idea why he robbed him or what he meant, Godbold said.
Merrick signed a statement against Jones.
Jones was arrested at 9 a.m. Thursday morning at 601 Old Washington Road, Apt. 6-F.
The apartment belonged to Brandi N. Wimberly.
She was also arrested on four counts of false pretenses.
Wimberly is being held on $1,881 bond.

They should hold him on more than $1800 bond. That poor man was probably scared to death thinking his life was over. Hopefully they prosecute this guy on terroristic threatening, assault w/ a deadly weapon, robbery, etc. and not allow the sentences to run concurrently but let them run consecutively.

The girl is being held on a 1,881.00 bond. Doesn't say what his bond is. They shouldn't release him on bond at all. The judge should lock him up for awhile.....
That's right swapmeet....

I agree, this guy should not be released on bond. Sticking a gun in someone's mouth is no game. It would be interesting to know what his outcome will be and if the outcome would be any different as if he stuck the gun in a judges' relative's mouth. In my opinion, there should be no difference, so I hope he gets the maximum possible penalty for his domestic terrorism.

Okay, now this is getting way out of hand. It is time for the people of Natchez, Vidalia, and Ferriday. To take a stand against all this high criminal activity going on. This is really getting out of hand. Protect yourself people it is not safe out there!!!

It's the same in every small town in Mississippi. Population has gotten bigger, crime is higher, and cost of living is climbing higher too. It has become a sad world that we live in!

Any wonder why N.O. won't get help to rebuild the area it flooded out. That was the reason they flooded it in the first place, to send all their crime our way. N.O. didn't care where the crime went as long as it went away. I still say get an island and send'em all there.

Whom shall we say they are Destiny?Send who back? This can be some of your people also. And Texasranger we're going back to the hanging days huh?You know everything goes on around these parts we are blaming it on the people from Katrina,That's not entirely true.I'm from Natchez and I can say for myself a resident of Natchez(we was like this before they came here). So would you'll please stop making excuses for us.It's the generation that's coming up now. They don't care about nothing.White,Black,Mexican or Hispanics. They just don't understand life and they don't try to listen at the older people

Locutstorm you are partially wrong. D'evereux Drive is named after the antebellum house which is named D'Evereux and the last four letters are not "eaux" but "reux" which is pronounced "roo" and not "ro". Most people call it "Devro" but it is mispronounced because the house was named D'Evereux -- Devroo.

How did this topic get to Katrina victims. The guy was born and raised right here in Natchez.

LoL. Its true nobody wants to rebuild that area because it was as infested with sin and crime as three day road kill with maggots. Everywhere you see these people they are loud, ignorant and obnoxious. And believe me these displaced victims are living better than they ever have in their life.

overthehill60.that mess on youtube is a disgrace and so are you for your remarks.

I agree that the U-tube video is disgraceful and it is sad to see how some of you think in 2008. I pray that devastion does not happen to the point that you lose everything or even a love one. It is amazing how two people could look at 1 image and see different things.
Crime was in Ntz yrs before Katrina happened but yet the N O residents still get blamed for the crime today. They may be contributing to the numbers but definitely not solely being the contributing factor.
Perro: Ironically, you used descriptions for NO residents that I hear daily from people describing Southern(MS/LA/GA/AL) people all the time.
Some of you need to venture out of the state to see how YOU are really viewed by others across America. You are viewed as the same regardless of color. Mention that you are from MS and see the facial expressions.
Texasranger: And the hanging comment that is so the 60's era and it is sad that you would even take the time to type that comment. And even worse that you think that way. God Bless you!

Yes in deed, in general Mississippi is most certainly looked down on by the rest of the country as ignorant trailer trash mullet head racists. However, I didn’t believe that in this day and age these accusations would be relevant. But reading these comments day after day in this paper by the “upstanding citizens of Natchez” it is very difficult for me not to believe that bigotry, racism and mean unchristian like people are alive and well in this town. Natchez is (was) dying on the vine so to speak and many people from New Orleans moved here after Katrina. Yes, some of the evacuees brought with them their lack of education and criminal mentality they sure seem to fit right in with the city’s homegrown lot of criminals, however many good citizens moved here opened business’s and are making a new life. I opened a business, pay taxes and employ local ‘s………but since it is so obvious that “evacuees” are so unwelcomed here I am more than anxious to take my business, my money, my taxes and spread the word about the open racism in Natchez and leave you all to your closed minded unchristian and bigoted ways. I do realize there are many good kind educated people here in Natchez but unless those people speak up and stamp out the ignorant loud mouths Natchez/Mississippi will continue to epitomize the concept of RACEISM to the rest of the country. This is nothing to be proud of.

(double) if the youtube was such a mess why did you watch it? That's one of the few freedows we still have & I'm sure you were not forced to watch it. Some people including yourself have trouble dealing with reality.
The reason is reality HURTS!
Anyone that has lived their entire life in Natchez is naive if they can't see that our community is worse since Katrina. Since Katrina the crime & drug rate seems to have doubled. Also now we don't have one gambling casino but are working on two more. Did all our local citizens get the jobs? No about 60% Mexicans, & evacuesses from New Orleans are doing the jobs that could have been for all the men & women that had been laid off from our factories. Be in deninal all you want but reality is reality & all you have to do is drive around town & have a look.
Now as for safety of our peaceful little community how many would be willing to take a walk downtown Natchez alone about 2AM. Not Me!
(doubled) I'm not being mean and cold hearted, it kills me to see those poor children who didn't ask to be be born into a situatuion like this. As for the elderly that is heart breaking especially the old woman being raped on the streets of N.O. Maybe I'm a disgrace to you but you are just one in millions that seems to think what went on & is still going on is not the cause for not only our problems but problems all over the country. Now crawl back in you protective shell & hide because it going to continue.
