VIdalia car burglaries investigated
Published Monday, June 23, 2008
VIDALIA — The Vidalia Police Department is searching for a suspect who went on a multiple-vehicle burglary spree Friday night.
The Vidalia police have a suspect in mind in connection with approximately 15 vehicle burglaries in the North Oak Street, North Cross Street and the northern end of the Concordia Drive extension, Police Chief Billy Hammers said.
“We are still trying to run all of it down and see what is and isn’t missing,” he said.
Most of the burglarized vehicles were unlocked, Hammers said.
The police have stepped up patrols in that neighborhood to prevent further burglaries, Hammers said.
To prevent a vehicle burglary, lock all vehicle doors and make sure nothing valuable such as an .mp3 player or Global Positioning System is visible from outside the car, Hammers said.
The investigation is ongoing.

Folks, let make it harder on the thieves. Theft is purely a crime of opportunity. Thieves most of the time won't take too much time to do too do a lot. They know they want to get in and get out to prevent detection. LOCK everything that can be locked. Doors, windows, etc. According to the report, they obviously went around trying doors and the doors that were unlocked, jack-pot! Also, I NEVER leave anything on my seat, even not for a minute. If I am shopping, it's all stuffed in the trunk, at least that way, it's not visible. Even music CDs unfortunately are fair game. GPS traveling devices even radar detectors can attract thieves.

get a stearing wheel lock and a gas cap that locks. Those people that go around at night setaling will have to answer to that one day. MAKE GIRLS OUT OF THEM FIRST. My 38 with hollow points will do that real good. they will also walk funny..

I would rather leave my car unlocked then have them bust out the window!! That has happened to me before and all they got away with was a few damn cd's!! AND i was out 275.00 for a passenger window!! I just choose not leave my GPS nor my radar detector in my car when i get out of it!!

Opinsab-same story here years back someone broke my windows (doors locked) only to get a $50 cd player and a few CD's. I was more disgusted about the broken windows than the missing items.
Today it depends on where I'm at if I lock the doors or not.

Come on Vidalia PD, don't allow this to start happening over here across the bridge.
Why would thieves choose these locations for breaking into cars? Either they are kids that didn't have transportation (and live in the area), or they are from another town and do not have a clue where the real valuables would be!

15 in one nite???? What was the total of all stolen valuables??? Was it worth a nites work??? Could have made more at min. wage. Surely could not have been worth getting caught and going to jail. I'm with you ncogg.

I always leave my truck unlocked..... I don't want my windows broken and I'm hoping someone will put something in my truck!!

I understand not wanting your windows broken, but some thieves don't want that noise to attract attention unless the vehicle is parked in a PACKED, busy mall parked far from the doors. Security can't and don't see between the tall trucks, etc. I have rarely seen glass broken out of windows while the car is in someone's drive way.
As for the gas locks, I invested in that years ago! A good investment because thieves will siphon your gasoline with NO shame! And no, one key does not fit all. My husband and I bought the same brand but our keys don't fit. You have to do what you have to do now-a-days!

This will not be tolerated on the Louisiana side of the river. No, this has not been happening here for a long time....trust me I know everything in Vidalia. BURGLARS BEWARE....WE DO NOT TOLERATE YOUR KIND HERE.

We've got too many gangsters
doin dirty deeds
too much corruption and crime in the streets
It's time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground
send them all to their maker and he'll settle'm down
You can bet he'll settle'm down

They only way to eliminate theft is to eliminate the thieves, the thugs and humbuggers, and dopers just laugh and do as they please. It,s all a big joke to them.

By tomorrow most will be out on bond or some such bull, they will be thuggin and thieving and doping all the same. I have heard them laugh at how much merchandise they still from the stores especially Wal-mart. They come in without a buggy and leave without a buggy,go figure. Nobody cares or is afraid for whatever reasons. It will get much much worse soon. They need to reopen Alcatraz and send all of them there for a permanent stay. When gas hit,s 10 bucks a gallon and we can,t pay our light bill and buy very little food, this thugging and theiving is going to escalate and so are the bodies laying around.

It will happen during the dark.
Parents, look through your child/chilren's things for something new.
Parents, do you know where your child/children are?

It can also happen in the day.Watch all hours. Some parents already know what their kids are doing.

You are so right my grandson's bike was stolen out of my front yard at 1:30 in the day. Luckily my neighbor saw them & between him chasing them & the police they found them within minutes. Of course by then they had panicked dropped the bike & was running. It was two little brothers, both under 11 years old. They looked very small & sad sitting in the back of a police car, but maybe it will teach them early.

where's the parents. I kept a watch out for my kids all day and all night. I knew where they were and what they were doing, because I CHECKED..... Go out and watch your children even if you have to STOP that second job. Money doesn't make good kids. It might feed them the junk food you buy .but good old fashioned cooking would be better for thier health ans soul...

Also Daddies go check on who your kids are hanging around with. Put a stop to the bad influnence, even if you have to report what your own kids are doing to the police. YOU know what I am talking about , stop covering up for your kids. if they do the crime they should & must do the time....

Ghost.....I have lived in the same spot in Vidalia 20+ years that happens to be in the same area mentioned in the article. My vehicles have been broken into repeatedly and my house twice years ago. I am only told by VPD that I need to make sure things are locked. Well every once in a while I forget --- then I'm robbed -- It's like they check my vehicles nightly. No one has ever been caught and none of my valuables (not much usually) is never recovered. The point is --- it is happening and has been happening on a regular basis.

It is happening everywhere.... Where once we weren't targets, the changes in society over the years, have made everyone a target..... The high cost of food and gasoline, hurricane Katrina bringing in the extra people with their own accustomed lifestyles, just the combination of things in the last several years have me believing that places once thought of as "Mayberry" are long, long gone.... very sad.

lroberts1...no offense but it is easy to tell someone to stop their second job..but what if that job is keeping food on the table, clothes on their back and a roof over their heads, then it is necessary. Where did the junk food comment come from, I was raised by a single mom, who worked two jobs (because she had to) and fixed a home cooked meal nightly. My siblings and I have never been arrested or committed any crimes. I could be wrong but it seems like you are not a single parent. You bring up a good point though-money doesnt make good kids, good parents do.

I was the first one to respond to this article and I am very glad to see some of the response. Thank you sayitloud,Iroberts, ncogg, rusgingjr, ghost, and texasranger. We need to get together and drink a beer and figure out how we can help solve this problem. I already have my own personal solution!!!! The only way crime will ever be fought, is on the "home front" with personal protection. One must make an example out of one of these thieves. Take pictures of them shot in your front yard and post it on the front page of the Natchez Democrat.
