Juvenile arrested for burglaries

Published Wednesday, June 25, 2008

VIDALIA — One hardworking teen just recently lost his summer job.

Vidalia Police Chief Billy Hammers said an arrest has been made in connection with the a Friday burglary spree.

Hammers said one juvenile, 16, has been arrested and is being held without bond until his court date is set.

“He’ll probably be charged with 26 counts of burglary,” he said.

While is was originally reported that 15 vehicles in the North Oak Street and the North Cross Street area were burglarized, additional homes and vehicles in the same area were also found to have been burglarized.

Hammers said the juvenile was arrested early Sunday morning shortly after burglarizing the Rainbow Mini Mart.

Hammers said he expects more arrests in connection with the burglaries to follow.

“I know he did not do it by himself,” Hammers said of the young suspect.

Hammers said authorities are currently looking for two or three other individuals in connection with the break-ins.

“This is still under investigation,” he said.

Hammers also said some of the property taken in the burglaries was recovered from the juvenile.

There were also vehicles that were burglarized on Elm St. and Willow Streets! In the vicinity of the Mayors house and Tappers house! Just a few houses from each as a matter of fact!

The burglar at the Rainbow Mini-Mart was seen by a passerby breaking the front window out of the store and jumping out of that broken window! He ran behind the building lugging a large bag filled to the brim with items from the store! He also cut his arm and hand badly as he jumped through that broken window and had to be taken to the hospital for stitches!
The Police recovered several bags of merchandise from behind his apartment!

Way to go VPD,,,,,and a huge Thank You to the man that drove by just at the right time and saw which way the burglar went so the Officers were able to track him down so fast!!!

I understand there have been several auto burglaries in the Ferriday area in Woodland Subdivision late Monday night,,,,early Tuesday morning! Probably the same bunch that hit the Vidalia area,,,,,with the exception of the one who was arrested!
The folks in Ferriday will probably have to wait until after July 1 to get anything done about their burlaries! Since they don't seem to have any cops over there that care enough to do anything about it!!!

Great news this morning. Much thanks to the police dept for being on their toes. Of course anyone could figure out it was more than one person doing all this. Get'em all. Keep us informed ND.

AGAIN WHERE'S THE PARENTS?? why are these juviniles allowed to roam the streets at night? Why can't there be a curfew put In to effect in the areas that have these kind of problems????? The police should just pick up any kids they see out at night, take them HOME and tell the parents to keep them there are they go to jail? BUT that's to simple! Now if any of you are offended about that , so be it!!!!!!!! You must be part of the problem.

Well someone was in my back yard Monday night. They left my gates open. I lock them with a clip because my dog knows how to open the latch. I guess they were trying to get in my shed.

put the motion lights up. they come on if any thing comes within the area. That usually scares the jerks away.also put the inside lights on a timer.

MAN!!! I thought there was a curfew rule in effect???What ever happened to that. And why are parents not putting a foot in kids behinds these days. I remember I had to be home before the dang street light came on.

I always had to be home when the street lights came on. My curfew was 11 pm until I got married and I was 19 and in college. I got many a foot up my butt for not walking the line. Some say I am overly protective and strict with my son who I 7. I don't care! I want my son to be an upstanding citizen, be responsible, and SAFE. The problem with society today is parents trying to be cool and/or being so wrapped up in themselves the don't care what their kids do as long as they don't bother them. There are also a lot of grandparents that are raising their grandchildren and they are to old or unable to keep up with them. My parents and in-laws are still in their mid fifties and can only handle my kids 7 and 1 for the night. My children are very well behaved so it is not their behavior that is the issue, it is the playing and picking up after them.

Sorry. It is should say "my son who is 7".

lroberts...I'm with you on that! There are too many busy mammies and pappies with something more important to do than seeing what their kids are up to. I make it a point to know my kids friends, their parents...etc. And I try to ensure my kids realize that I may be cool at times, but I am their parent first and foremost.

When the streetlights come on, it's time for any kid to be home...whether it's 1970 or 2008.

I think that curfew should be inforced, also ANY one walking the streets after maybe 10:00 pm/ They are up to NO good. I saw a man walking down my steeet at 5:am with a stripped black & white shirt on. we were leaving so we just came on back home. It does no good to report crime in Vidalia. I reported a drug deal going on in front of my home, three times within four minutes. the dispasher sent the patrol car to a different street , different address, and also reported a different car involved, I told her the make & the color of the car, the kind of wheel covers it had, and it was a black guy, exuse me,,,,, AFrican American) riding by tooting his horn ,as a signal to any one that wanted his DRUGS..... needless to say the durg deal went down and "HE"a well know druggy,,,>. road his bycycle off, The policeman came to my home and told me this. I saw the whole thing go down. The guy was stopped and searched, but by that time he had either smoked the drugs are made away with them...I called Randy Maxwell, and he told me mistakes are made, NOT after me calling as many times ,,it was NO mistake.. Well Randy if you run again I will do all I can to see you don't go back in office. You have someone in the place of dispasher that is apparently sending the patrol cars to the wrong streets HUMMMM WONDER WHY????

I agree with lilredhead and kpage. I am also tough on my kids. But there are alot of parents that want to be friends with their kids instead of parents. BUMP ALL THAT!!! I am the parent, you are the child and you will stay in a child's place or get knocked the heck out. But yeah there are a lot of grandparents stepping up the plate raising grandkids becuz the parents don't want to grow the freak up. You know what really kills me is that the parents will spend all this money on Jordans or air force ones to go out to the club, but that kids still wearing the rag a muffins shoes with the sole coming off to school. WTF???

ncogg how true! My kids come first, I do without so they can have what they need. I hate to see the poor kids in Walmart that are filthy, with clothes that don't fit, and torn up shoes. I was at Walmart a few weeks ago and we found a little girl walking in the parking lot with no shoes (that asphalt is HOT!) crying. We got her inside and gave her something to drink at the service counter. She told us her name, but did not know her last name or her mama's name! SHE WAS THREE! Her mama came walking up laughing, talking on the cell phone with another child about five behind her. She looked at her daughter then looked behind her and said she did not even know she was not behind her! We had her at the desk for over 20 minutes! They were paging code Adam and describing the girl but the mother never came up there to get her child. She had on nice clothes, her nails were done, and she had her hair all fixed up. Someone could have kidnapped her, raped her, beat her, or killed her. So sad!

The best protection I have found is I conviently have a short in the shed and every time I leave I flip the switch. Or even at night, so you dare try to steal my stuff you will light up like a christmas tree! Not my fault your are trespassing and by the way there are signs on the property that states enter at your own risk. Not my fault you can not read. Then I still have the cameras so I can watch the show afterwards. There are boards with nails in them also but I will not tell ya where. All I can say is they might arive alive but the will leave dead as a door knob. I have had enough! So for all you criminals get a job! Casue it is not worth coming to visit my house. buzzzzzzzzz! lol

And because of these types of breakins and robberies by these scumbags, people get nervous and sometimes make mistakes like the man who accidently shot his wife. What a heartbreaker.

That was no accident.IN MY OPINION...

oldschool, you would probably be sued because your signs aren't bi-lingual. The thieves could always say they can't read English. And before anyone jumps on this I am not accusing anyone from any other country. Just commenting on the political correctness of today's world.

Posted by oldschool (anonymous) on June 26, 2008 at 10:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Who cares you are in america and they should be able to speak and read english if you can't go back to where you come from cause this is OUR COUNTRY!!!! No more room for excuses.
