Sheriff’s deputy fired after wreck

Published Saturday, June 28, 2008

NATCHEZ — Little more than one week after being involved in a serious auto accident, Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy Marcus Washington’s employment was terminated.

Sheriff Ronny Brown said during the course of the investigation it was learned that Washington’s Mississippi driver’s license was suspended.

Brown said that while Washington was not fired specifically because of his suspended license, he felt it was “in the best interest of the county.”

Brown said when Washington was hired a background check did not reveal the suspension.

Brown said Washington was terminated during his probationary period.

All new deputies are on a one-year probationary period Brown said.

On June 18, Washington was responding to a call to assist another deputy when his cruiser was involved in an accident.

Washington reported that a white vehicle pulled in front of his cruiser causing him to drive off of D’Evereux Drive and into the lot of an auto dealership.

Washington crashed into four vehicles on the lot.

Brown said a reconstruction of the accident revealed Washington was traveling at approximately 60 mph.

Give Natchez PD kudos! Atleast they fired him, unlike Ferriday, that let them keep on driving police cars with no license.

Didn't exist did it.

jammin - he is/was with the SO not the NPD. I know the original article said there was a witness who saw the white vehicle. I think they need to talk to that witness again.
How in the world can someone get a background check and have a suspended license "overlooked"? Especially for a law enforcement position.

Posted by rep08 (anonymous) on June 28, 2008 at 9:40 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Someboby in the front office of the SO knew this man had a suspended license. There is no way you can do a background check and not find this out. It sounds like the SO was just going to keep this their dirty little secret, but once the wreck happened they had to report it to the state, and the crap hit the fan. Now it goes to show you that the hand that feeds you well, will slap you in the face when you screw up. Ronnie Brown says he didnt get fired because of the acident, that's bull, why would they pay money to train this guy only to fire him a less than a month later for no apparent reason. This guy was serving Sheriff brown and could have paid the ultimate price, now he's sitting home licking his wounds preparing to sit in the unemployment lines. Shame on you Ronny Brown, shame on you Deputy washington I hope you didnt arrest someone for a suspended license. Who will pay the medical bills?

Whoever is in charge with compliance with the Sheriff's office
needs to be talked to as well. Someone needs to run a motor vehicle report to double check for deficencies on every deputy driving a unit, for liability and insurance purposes. If someone gets killed in an accident by law enforcement driving a unit, the lawsuit will be unbelievable. How often is the Sheriff and Natchez Police department doing random drug screens? I'm not saying this guy was under the influence but urine drug screens need to be frequently monitored as well.

I can't believe that this story isn't one of the main three on this website. It's stuck down at the very bottom of today's news. I can't wait to get see where the actual paper has it. If it's "buried" then ND needs to check their allegiances. If it's own the front page in big letters, then I apologize now.

I'm starting to doubt the white car scenario. I think they do need to recheck that witness' statement. Washington might have got to him before the interviewers. He shouldn't have been going sixty anyway. I remember how all those people were lambasting this phantom white car for not getting out of the way.

didn't you read the article a background was done and it did not show a suspended license do you fools think employers are notified by the state when a license is suspended maybe the license was suspended like the paper said, after he came to work dep washington said he was never notified he had a suspended license come on folks what do you expect the sheriff to do he did correct the problem and got rid of the deputy no cover up here folks for once looks like the ND printed a story right read it again people why do you all think it is a cover up thats the old ferrell story always not telling it like it is thanks sheriff dept for doing the right thing not the usual ferrell thing of hiding behind something you know folks this article could be actually really correct and simple this mans license was probably good on the computer when he went to work it happens everyday i know if he had a suspended license and all of you do also that he could not be on the insurance and would not have got a job also yes the county takes drug tests on its employees and i am told that the sheriff is the only elected official to take drug tests just like the county requires of its employees and that sheriff brown has took them each time his name is picked shame here on other elected officials what are they hiding

go sheriff keep doing your job and if it involves firing someone do it because if you did not fire him, then what would we say. somebody makes something out of something that they donot know all the facts about everyday. the article said you did a investigation and this was the results thank you and allgod we know your story you are not satisfied with your brothers wreck and never will sometimes facts are facts mam

Posted by NoWireHangers (anonymous) on June 28, 2008 at 11:39 a.m. (Suggest removal)

There needs to be a system of checks and balances to make sure that this never happens again. Whoever is in the Compliance Department with the Sheriff's office maybe needs to schedule a periodic check; say every quarter, with Motor Vehicle to make sure that there aren't any problems with any of the Deputies licenses. Could be a huge liability issue with resulting lawsuits if it's not properly monitored. Look how much time deputies spend in their units. Should make this a priority.
You can't rely on the employee stepping forward and telling you about problems with their licenses that they may or may not know about.

Being his lic was suspended will the ins still cover the damage? I know ours wouldn't.....

The way i read the artical it said "Brown said when Washington was hired a background check did not reveal the suspension." Like in the above post could have been suspended after the back ground check..

Posted by eyeinthesky (anonymous) on June 28, 2008 at 5:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)

his license was suspended for not paying two traffic tickets in texas and one in louisiana. I know this because i saw the print out. and yes he knew it was suspended and no it wasn't just suspended monday has been for a while

Posted by acedog (anonymous) on June 28, 2008 at 5:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

there's no doubt that the deputy knew his license were suspended. this is just another prime example that the sheriff of adams county is a idiot. people they didn't take the time to check his license when they hired him. ronny brown is running a loose ship up there and at the end of the day its causing the taxpayers. the insurance is not going to cover this. adams county will have to cover the bill for the 5 cars that are involved.

The article says that Washington was still on probation with the Sheriff's office! Does anyone know how long he's been with the ACSO? And also did he used to be a Police officer with Natchez before going to work at ACSO?

I think the Sheriffs office should have to pay for the vehicles he crashed into because they should have done their job and ran a better background check on this guy! With all the technology they have and with all the agencies they can go through to check on someone,,,,you're not going to tell me they couldn't find out that his license was suspended!
How did they NOT know that he had outstanding tickets in Texas and Louisiana???They seem to be able to find that information out on people they have stopped!!! Why not one of their own???

Posted by fire39212 (anonymous) on June 28, 2008 at 7:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If they were suspended then yea sarge..But, If they were suspended after he was hired he should have to pay!!!

acedog you seem so smart here why don't you make your commenys to the sheriffs face not anonymous and eyeinthesky you must be acop, citizens cannot see those ncic reports bottom line brown is the sheriff elected by 80%of the voters and i know you can personally go and see him, he doesn't play blogs and what do you guys want him to do the deputy had to go, he can't drive he doesn't have a license people at least our sheriff makes decicions, i donot see him covering up things fom the article, he told it like it happened

Posted by natchez500 (anonymous) on June 28, 2008 at 8:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

sarge seems like they did he got fired use your head does your boss run your dl everyday again article said he had alicense, they found it suspended when they did the wreck report the deputy still said his license was not suspended he never received a notice of suspension last week you guys are praying for him and now he is a crook and nd boy this looks like front page news get on something better

The "whole story" sounds strange? There are still alot of unanswered questions? Only God knows the real answers?

Posted by jack (anonymous) on June 28, 2008 at 8:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

whats so strange rushing deputy got fired when found out his license was suspended you all act like the sheriff should have gave him a medal and never told anyone now that would be a story and you cannot get one out of this article seems like the sheriff did the right thing and people are bashing him for doing his job

Posted by Sarge (anonymous) on June 28, 2008 at 11:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think the Sheriff absolutely did the right thing when he fired his Deputy! A drivers license is a must have in a law enforcement officers job! They're in the car probably 11 hours out of a 12 hour shift!

Whats so hard to understand about that?

natchez500,,,,,,,,If my boss thought it necessary,,,,,YES he would run my DL everyday! And anyone else that works for him! The reality is that everytime an Officer gets in one of those County owned cars,,,,,They could possibly have a wreck! That possibility comes with the job!

My question was a valid one! How long had he been working for ACSO when he had the wreck?

And how long will it take to figure who you are. Seems like you are not suppose to be giving out information pertaining to the job. Go figure NPD or SO.
