Granddaughter claims tombstone
Published Tuesday, July 1, 2008
FERRIDAY — After a five-years plus wait, Mary Green’s tombstone is headed home.
Originally dumped in a Natchez yard as a Halloween prank five years ago, the tombstone sat at the Natchez Police Station until early May, when Lt. Tom McGehee contacted the Louisiana Department of Vital Records and traced the headstone to a Ferriday cemetery.
The stone was then transferred to the Ferriday police, but sat at the station when no one immediately came forward to claim it.
That changed over the weekend, however, when Green’s granddaughter came to the police station to claim the stone, the Ferriday police said Monday.
Born in 1900, Green died in 1977.

Glad Mary is home. It's been a long time.

I would like to know who keeps labeling this crime as a "prank". Is it the Democrat or the police? Calling it a prank tends to play it down as a simple trick. But grave markers are not inexpensive and the theft of one should be considered serious. The theft of many items of lesser value such as lawnmowers and purses are never called "pranks" and are considered to be crimes and investigated. So who doesn't take this as serious, the Natchez Police Department or the Natchez Democrat?

Someone has to be really sick to go out to a grave and take someone's tombstone and then place it in someone's front yard. What is this world coming to? But I hope that it gets put back into place really soon. Whoever did this needs to get into some kind of trouble.

I agree this is NOT a prank. It's a criminal act & should be treated as one. I'm sure if it was the "pranksters" family they would think it different & seek justice.

This can't be a prank folks!!!! It's a dadgum FELONY!!!! Pranksters get slapped on the wrist...felons go to prison. Well........we ARE in the Miss-Lou area and we all know how THAT goes!

AHHHH, I'm so happy for the family. And remember bloggers we asked the felon to just call the police station and tell them where it belonged. We wanted to get it back to Ms. Mary and I'm sure the family is happy to have it back. But the felon or felons did not have enough respect to do so. To you punky 'pranksters' out there, keep in mind that this is the last, final act anyone can do for you, is to mark where your remains will lie forever and it should be held in respect by all others. I hope some day you will understand what you did and hang your head in shame.

The word prank should not even be used here.To me its a
word that denotes "excuse".There is no excuse for this act as stated, this is the act of a felon. These people will not feel shame.

Grand theft larceny. The one on my dads grave cost $3,000.00. That is more than many used autos that are stolen. So what is the difference. Why didnt they take finger prints and at least try to look for the FELON> I guess it was fot the very same reason the JPD did not go look for my tools that were stolen off the jobsite last August...PURE F------ laziness.

Whoever did this must not have ever had anyone that they cared about pass away. They would have alot more respect for the gravesites and family members of the deceased, and this crime would have never crossed their mind(s).

This has been in the paper several times. What took the grandchild so long to claim the headstone?
