Natchez 10s blow out Copiah
Published Tuesday, July 1, 2008
HAZLEHURST — The Natchez 10-year-old All-Stars had a perfect night Monday.
Not only did they wipe out Copiah by a 14-0 score, they were able to finish the game in four innings and didn’t have to burn anyone in their pitching staff.
“We’re sitting in the catbird’s seat so to speak,” Natchez coach Jeff Webb said. “We can (pitch) anyone we want to now, which is good because tomorrow should be a tough game.”
Natchez scored seven runs in both of the first two innings and the game was called after four innings due to the mercy rule.
“We hit the ball well, which is what we needed to do and we finished the game early, which is what we also needed to do,” Webb said. “We hit well and pitched well and that was it.”
While all of the Natchez All-Stars hit the ball well, Christopher White had an especially good game.
White was the winning pitcher, as he pitched the first two innings without giving up a hit. He also went 2-for-2 with a home run and a double.
“He was knocking the cover off the ball,” Webb said. “The double he hit almost went through the fence.”
Darrick Lewis had two doubles for Natchez while Brody Cole and Edwin Byrne also had doubles in the win.
Will Moffett and Landon Seyfarth were 2-for-2 on the night.
Natchez’s competition gets much tougher tonight as they will face off against a Brookhaven Americans team they beat 3-1 in the opening game of the tournament last Thursday.
“I’m sure they’ll throw their ace against us,” Webb said. “We’re gearing up for a tough game.”
Of the four teams left in the tournament, Natchez is the only one without a loss.
Should Natchez win tonight, they would advance to the championship game and would have to be beaten twice to lose the championship.
