CORRECTION: Damon Henderson escaped from the Concordia Parish Correctional Facility June 2, and was arrested July 2.We regret the error and are happy to set the record straight.
VIDALIA — Baton Rouge authorities have arrested a Concordia Parish trusty who escaped from the Concordia Parish Correctional Facility June 2.
The arrest was made July 2.
Damon Henderson, 33, was working as a trusty in the CPCF auto maintenance shop at the time of the escape.
Henderson, along with his 15-year-old nephew, face a number of burglary charges in Ascension Parish, where he is currently being detained.
He also faces a charge of escape from prison and unauthorized use of a moveable in Concordia Parish.
The escape charge could add five years to Henderson’s sentence, Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Kathleen Stevens.
Though it was initially thought that Henderson had outside assistance and was picked up by a brown Chevrolet pickup truck, it was later discovered he had allegedly stolen a white Dodge Durango from the shop, Stevens said.
The Durango belonged to the Ferriday Fire Department, and was being worked on at the time.
Henderson allegedly drove the Durango to the Baton Rouge area, where he was reportedly allowed to test drive a different vehicle, which he allegedly did not return.
The Durango was later returned to the Ferriday Fire Department.
Henderson was originally sentenced to prison on a theft conviction. He had been working as a trusty for approximately a month at the time of the escape.

Another career criminal.

It's about time they caught him. Let's just hope our sheriff has FINALLY learned his lesson. They are criminals. That's why they are in your care. So would you PLEASE stop treating them like they are guests in your hotel?

He wasn't so 'trusty' after all, was he???? Glad he is off the streets.Maybe the next jail won't give him the red carpet treatment.

Well you have to commend this upstanding trusty, at least he's been busy while out in the free world, 10 counts of burglary. The deputies in Concordia Parish are good judges of character allowing this guy to be a trusty. Add to the 10 counts of burglary stealing the Dodge truck, escape from jail, he'll be in jail for a while.

Is his girlfriend in Baton Rouge? Isn't that what he left for?
LOL

Keep those trusties in jail and find jobs for them to do there...let their girlfriends visit them in jail. I don't care if you give them a room for the visit, but keep them on the other side of the fence.

WELL I GUESS I SOULD NOT HAVE BEEN MAD WHEN THEY SKIPPED A WEEK ON THE COURTHOUSE RECORDS?
Posted by kernel (anonymous) on July 8, 2008 at 12:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Not one week of courthouse records, james...they skipped two weeks. I have it on good authority though that things may pick up in this area, since they are training a new person to collect this data! For now, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt!

"Baton Rouge authorities have arrested a Concordia Parish trusty who escaped from the Concordia Parish Correctional Facility July 2."
IMO, this sentence makes it sound like the inmate escaped on July 2 when really he was arrested on July 2. We all know what it is supposed to mean but that is not how it reads!

It does read like that doesn't it kernel? This con didn't escape on July 2nd,,,,,,He escaped on June 2nd and was CAPTURED on July 2! A full month later!
Guess he used that month to rob and burglarize about 50 homes down South! The boy that was with him was his Nephew! I'll bet the boys Mama wishes she would have never let her 15 year old son hang with his Uncle now!
Real good influence there Unc!!!

When I first read the article this morning I thought there was another trusty escape. And guess what? I wasn't surprised! But I am glad they caught this guy. I also admit to feeling a little willy-nilly knowing this guy stole the Fire Dept.'s Durango and everybody in Concordia Parish and Adams County was in danger of this guy. Why do we never hear alerts when these dudes escape? The Civil Service never has issues with testing their alert system on every channel on cable (and I'm appreciative)...why can't they let us know about escapees that way? They ARE civil service!

Maybe the ND can hire a "Trusty Trustee" for a spell checker

I know we make mistakes from time to time (who wouldn't when you write thousands of words each day. But we have run into this spelling question before. Here is what Webster's Dictionary has to say about trusty and trustee.
"trusty - noun ( pl. trusties), a prisoner who is given special privileges or responsibilities in return for good behavior."
"trustee - noun, an individual person or member of a board given control or powers of administration of property in trust with a legal obligation to administer it solely for the purposes specified"

Okay, I guess taking a test drive with the customer or even just asking them to leave a valid driver's license for the test drive, is just something that I took for granted happened? Also, I wonder was one month out, ON THE RUN, worth 5 more years added to his sentence and the loss of his trustee status? He surely was not locked up for making the best decisions.

Good job Democrat and I appreciate you.

If he had been locked up inside the prison walls and not let out as a trusty, he wouldn't have escaped and influenced the behavior of his 15 year old nephew. He couldn't be trusted...if you will. Just admit it...that's the reason he was in prison in the first place...he has a poor sense of judgement and can't be trusted.
If you are going to allow prisoners out of jail to work amongst law abiding citizens, then you should put one of those nifty ankle braclets on them with a gps tracking device. Or, how about a ball and chain, or a chip? But, I would prefer that you kept them in prison.
Prisoners and illegals are the new slave labor...they don't work free, but they do work cheap! Give them jobs on the inside of the fence.
Posted by Peace007 (anonymous) on July 8, 2008 at 12:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)
So, here is the big question...Is hiring prison labor saving enough money for the parish to justify the money being spent on hunting down the trusted escapees, and also, to justify the monetary damage of their crime sprees while out on the lamb?

James and Kernel,
Which weeks of courthouse records are you referring to?
I've checked the last two weeks and they were published. And I'm not aware that we missed a week anytime before that either.
Thanks
Julie

Julie,
About two weeks ago you missed updating the courthouse records. You also tend to miss updating the public arrest records as well. You know us nosy people... We need our daily dose of gossip! LOL.. But its OK I forgive you. I know you are busy!

ND, for the love of mercy, it's spelled 'TRUSTEE'!!!!! I should know, I work at the freaking prison!
Posted by CoolChief (anonymous) on July 9, 2008 at 11:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I think Starla may be correct. I had a little time on my hands so I Looked it up for myself. Turns out the word TRUSTEE is primarily used is a noun as in (the Trustee escaped). It also shows it used as a verb. You have to get way down on the Trustee list to find the word TRUSTY.When you Look that up it says that TRUSTY is primary use as an adjective as in (My Trusty Pocketknife). You have to go farther down the list on Trusty to find it on list as a noun. Sounds like the ND may be correct but only if you go way down the list and get to the technical stuff. Does anyone else out there spell it Trusty? Just curious, don't sweat it ND

Mr. Hillyer and the ND are right. Both the Columbia Guide to Standard American English and the Associated Press Stylebook indicate the use of trusty in this story is correct.
And um, yeah... I think I'll have to agree with those sources rather than someone named Starla who works at a prison.

Good one elvisss.
Some have a lot of time on their hands.

Im pretty sure Starla is not the best source for dictionary information. I dont believe double s elvis to be a dictionary authority either. I looked my info up on webster dictionary online. Im not saying I am right. Which is spelling is best? Are there any english authorities /teachers out there who know? Speak up, set us staight.
Posted by notfromnatchez (anonymous) on July 9, 2008 at 1:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I would tend to believe Elvisss. Elvisss has two pretty good sources to quote.
I don't think a teacher from the miss-lou area would qualify as an english authority...even if they teach english.

Why can't all words come directly from the Bible? After all, it is the only thing that matters in this world. It is the only truth that man has written down.
Posted by starla (anonymous) on July 9, 2008 at 4:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Both could be correct, but check out this google link.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...
My real name is not starla, and what's wrong with working at the prison? It's a job and it helps to support my children.
Whether it's 'trusty' or 'trustee', the fact remains that ND's editing skills leave a lot to be desired.
