Man clings to life after shooting

NATCHEZ — A Natchez man is in critical condition after he was wounded in a Thursday night shooting.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the mother of Reginald Givens, 27, at approximately 9:35 p.m. at Givens’ 13 Davis Court residence.

The mother of the victim had found him on the kitchen floor, reportedly shot in the chest, shoulder and arm with a .38 caliber firearm.

The incident is believed to be drug-related, Adams County Sheriff Ronny Brown said.

Givens was transported to Natchez Regional Medical Center, and was flown to University Medical Center in Jackson Friday morning.

Givens identified the suspect, Trenton Earl, 24, of 2A Lincoln St., as the one who allegedly shot him, Brown said.

Authorities believe that though Givens was shot three times, only two bullets struck him, one of which passed through his arm before lodging in his body, Brown said.

After authorities located Earl at his mother’s house, she transported him to the sheriff’s office, where he was booked on charges of aggravated assault.

No bond has been set.

Earl has had a string of previous run-ins with the law, including a drug conviction in 2002 and an aggravated assault charge in March 2005, and he was released from the Mississippi Department of Corrections in late May, Brown said.

Earl will now have to serve out the remainder of the drug sentence, from which he was on probation, Brown said.
