State keeps watch on election

Published Wednesday, July 23, 2008

WOODVILLE — Vote counting in Wilkinson County continued into the night, and at 11 p.m. there were no results.

Polls closed at 7 p.m. and the first precinct box arrived at the county courthouse at approximately 7:50 p.m.

Only two candidates, Sheriff Reginald Jackson and challenger Calvin Gaines were on Tuesday’s ballot.

Keeping watchful eyes over the vote counting were staff members from the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation agents, a U.S. Marshal, a state policeman and a representative of the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.

The election came under scrutiny even before Tuesday when Jackson filed a motion to move the election to a later day because early voting did not begin when it was supposed to and because the election was not properly advertised.

During early voting, two different ballots were used, one which listed Jackson’s name first and the other, which listed Gaines’, name first. Jackson’s attorney, Everett Sanders, called the use of two ballots during voting — election officials said the switch was made during a correction to a filing mistake — a “built-in election contest.”

All of the paper ballots — absentee, affidavit and curbside ballots — had to be hand counted by members of the Wilkinson County election commission because of the ballot change.

Judge Robert Gibbs, one of the special masters in the election, observed the counting with a representative from the attorney general’s office.

In response to Jackson’s request to delay the election, Judge Jim Persons ruled that the election had to continue Tuesday, but that if a candidate had objections to the early voting system they could file for post-election relief — in other words, they could file an election contest.

Even with all of the official observation and even before counting began, Everlener Jackson — the sheriff’s sister — said she did not believe the election was fair. The number of people in the front of the courtroom, where the ballots were counted, troubled her, Jackson said.

“There are too many people up there,” she said. “They just want to take control.”

Centreville precinct 1 poll worker Gloria Davis, however, said she did believe the election was fair. “We just did everything by the rules, so it was fair as far as I am concerned,” Davis said. “We didn’t have a single difficulty.”

The people of Wilkinson County need to stop acting like they have lost their minds because God is going to stop all of this junk very soon the way he feels that it should be done.

The "watchful eyes" are way, way too late. They should have been in Wilkinson County back in August, 2007 and even before that! All is not over until the corruption in the county is eliminated.

This has nothing to do with God (which I believe in). This is what happens when you have a mostly ignorant, agenda driven group of people running things. There are some smart people down there, but they are in the minority. What does this town have to offer other than a traffic ticket, welfare burden, and a bad mark on backwood Mississippi towns. I am tired of hearing about these crooks down there. I won't stop there even if I have to use the restroom. Think of the tax payer dollars that have been wasted spent on watching these people make sure they give themselves a fair election. GO FIGURE! Ignorance costs money, and it is costing you and me and this country billions every year. I think to vote you should have to pay taxes and at least have a decent iq score. That would cut a lot of the bull and agenda driven politicians out of our elections.

NatchezEnema, thank you, your comments are very well taken.
Do you have the phone number we call to get Wilkinson county an enema?

Posted by NatchezEnema (anonymous) on July 23, 2008 at 9:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah, It's 1-900-flush-em. All proceeds go to stopping waste and starting voter regisration!

NatchezEnema: In reference to your comments about the smart people in WIlkinson County are in the minority, does this means that you are saying that the Wilkinson County "whites" are smart? Well let me inform you of something, Wilkinson County has lots of intelligent blacks this is why you are so upset. Whenever things do not go your way...you cry foul. The racially bias media paint us as being cheaters, liars, crooks and less intelligent. I must tell you one fact, we have God on our side. The Jim Crow days are over in Wilkinson County so get use to it. By the way, we would appreciate if you NEVER stop in Wilkinson County, you will only hurt your own "bladder".

6bufgal7: Get your facts straight, the United States Department of Justice monitored the August 2007 Election.

THANK YOU LOVELY LADY, YOU JUST PROVED MY POINT! Who said anything about black or white? I will use my quote " This is what happens when you have a mostly ignorant, agenda driven group of people running things." And you certainly sound like one of the people that have an agenda! And by your racial comment, probably a low iq. Now I will use your quote " The racially bias media paint us as being cheaters, liars, crooks and less intelligent". Well, you are. The feds are not up hear watching the elections, but they are there spending my tax dollars watching yours. I think the media has done a good job at showing that your town is full of cheaters, liars, crooks and less intelligent people. If it wasn't we would not even be reading about this. Everybody knows I am the first to call out waste in goverment and certainly not a racist. People like you are a burden on society. With you it has to be black or white, not right or wrong. GET A LIFE. YOURS SOUNDS MISERABLE.

NatchezEnema : You also prove my point you are ignorant and white. Continue to remember Jim Crow days are over. You would agree with the newspaper because of it's bias coverage of Wilkinson County. Get Over It...By the way, who's in the minority in Wilkinson County?

Posted by EuropeanAmerican (anonymous) on July 23, 2008 at 10:02 a.m. (Suggest removal)

NatchezEnema, I got through to 1-900-flush-em. The technician I spoke to said it would be next spring before they could do the job. Due to the enormous volume of water needed to give Wilkinson County an enema, the Mississippi needed to be above flood stage.

Posted by NatchezEnema (anonymous) on July 23, 2008 at 10:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)

No you keep living in the past, that is where you belong. Jim Crow has about as much to do with this corruption as George Washington. And if there are any intelligent black people there the are certainly not in the goverment. Really I don't care. If you will sit back and let the black folks in goverment there do the black majority population wrong shame on you. You don't know what I think, and things are not going the right way down there, and it is costing me up here. It's not a black or white thing. It's a right or wrong thing. If you think it's going right down there, you are ignorant. Stay on the facts of the article not your hate. Direct that to the right place, your cheating, lieing, crooked and less intelligent goverment.

lovelylady: you need to STOP playing your race card! You have run your hatred in the ground! People are sick and tired of hearing your racially inspired hatred! I have a news flash for you: YOU CANNOT MAKE IT TO HEAVEN WITH SO MUCH HATRED IN YOUR HEART! Wilkinson County is the most corrupt small town in Mississippi. EVERYONE knows it! You sit up in the S.O making racial comments on here when you are SUPPOSE to be working. Instead you are using tax payers dollars, tax payers internet to get on here and spew your poison. Do you reread your comments? You are a HATE filled woman! You spew at everyone that has an opinion that isnt your own. Dont worry, your county paid SUV wont be taken from you yet. You can relax now. The media doesnt PORTRAY, they roll the film and the actions that is played out by you all simply SHOWS all the cheaters, liars, crooks, and less intelligent. Do you really THINK that you look INTELLIGENT by coming on here and spewing racial poison????? Get OFF of the race card it worn out!

I agree with you Clydell, and have always felt this way, 'let the man who has won a fairly conducted election do his job'.

Posted by Spanky (anonymous) on July 23, 2008 at 12:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Jackson has had several years to do his job but has failed so far. If he had done his job he would have won by a landslide instead of 80 votes. Apparently 49% of the voters are not satisfied with his record so for. He could help heal this county if he would try but I don't believe he is interested in this county being in harmony. He is only one guy but he is in an important position to offer this county alot toward healing. It is entirely up to him to make a difference even if it is a small difference. The rest is up to the residents of Wilkinson County.

It has just come to my attention that last night after the ballot boxes were resealed and the order was to resume today at 10:00, the seal on the Woodville 2 Box was broken by one of the election commissioners, and a member of the Ross fraction of the WCDEC.

((NatchezEnema)) you need to explain this comment. Because what I get from it is that you think the black people in Wilkinson County are not intelligent. "And if there are any intelligent black people there the are certainly not in the goverment"

Not all of the people in Wilkinson County Government are corrupt there are still a small number that are there for the well being of the people of Wilkinson County. All of this racial bull**** needs to stop there are intelligent people of both races in Wilkinson County, all they need to do is look out for the well being of all that are involved but that rarely happens. Wilkinson County will never change because the people of Wilkinson County will not allow a change. The same ones are going to continue to get up everyday and go to their workplaces and do the same thing they have been doing for the last few years, nothing.. Like Spanky said in his comment Jackson could help heal this county but he is not, he has not done so before...The people of Wilkinson County are going to have to make the changes and as hard as they try there is still corruption there that will fail them.....A change will never come as long as the same ones are in charge there, and if a new one or two comes in and tries to make changes there are so many that are against a change til it never happens....No matter Wilkinson County is doomed to be corrupt, everyone should be able to see this now.....

By opening the box and admitting to it, were they trying to sabatoge Sheriff Jackson's re-election?

Posted by blessed_momma (anonymous) on July 23, 2008 at 2:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Why else would they open it?

Posted by blessed_momma (anonymous) on July 23, 2008 at 2:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)

They are Pips people! I guess they just wanted to make sure that he had enough votes!

Posted by EuropeanAmerican (anonymous) on July 23, 2008 at 2:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

But I am sure with amount of time they have spent in the courtroom, they would have known that illegaly opening the box, would cause the Woodville 2 box to be thrown out.
I think it must be sabatoge, looks like The Kingfish would have known too.

Posted by blessed_momma (anonymous) on July 23, 2008 at 2:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Personally, I THINK that they like all the turmoil. Maybe, it makes them feel "BIG" or "IN CHARGE". WHO KNOWS?
God knows!!

Posted by EuropeanAmerican (anonymous) on July 23, 2008 at 4:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)

'The Kingfish' was a lot smarter than I ever imagined. While he was out cruising around Woodville with the chairman of the WDEC's black faction and going over to 'the princesse's' house for banana pudding I thought he was taking sides. In reality he was setting them up.

The box in questionwas one mile from the courthouse, but it took over 4 hours to arrive!!! HUUUMMM!

I see another knuckle head race baiter is trying to attack me again. I will quote myself one more time " This is what happens when you have a mostly ignorant, agenda driven group of people running things. There are some smart people down there, but they are in the minority". I did not say "but they are in the minority race." This is simple, like tic tac toe, or, if you can't comprehend without bringing race into it I will explain. The crooks are in the majority in the places of power (goverment in Woodville) be it they are white, black, red, or green. Which is obvious by this debacle that has unfolded down there. There is no one or two people that could have got away with this. It took a whole troop, or majority, to start this mess, and a whole troop of Law enforcement to bring it under control ( at tax payer expense.) I think where the race came in is when you hear the word minority you and some think BLACK first and not think less first. noun, plural -ties, adjective
–noun 1. the smaller part or number; a number, part, or amount forming less than half of the whole.
2. a smaller party or group opposed to a majority, as in voting or other action.
The smart minority down there, be it white, black, red or a martian green are of the few. YOU KNOW WHY? Only a bunch of ignorant agenda driven idiots in the majority could have started this mess and tried to get away with it. Maybe the crooks in Woodville and Ferriday should join forces and start a new town. Lets call it, say, WOORRIDAY, or, CROOKSVILLE. When they do let me know and I will send some crooks from Natchez your way. When you use race to try and make your point instead of intelligence, you show your ignorance. I think anybody who reads these posts will know who is ignorant. I will end one more time with my quote so now that you have been enlightned by the ENEMA you may understand " This is what happens when you have a mostly ignorant, agenda driven group of people running things. There are some smart people down there, but they are in the minority.

Why in the hell is anyone playing the race card its one white guy in the whole county election how about using something else to move yourself forward in life instead of when something isn't given to you complain that its because your black and cry racism to get what you want instead of earning it like everyone else. And another thing this has nothing to do with woodville but it does have something to do about racism if you want to go there why the hell when someone white makes a remotely non politically correct or racist comment you want them to be fired from there job and there life ruined and then you can have a so called reverend (i guess you can get this title out of a crackerjack box now) like jeramiah wright spew hatred and rasicm at church and not only keep speaking the "word" but be invited to speak at naacp conventions as a guest speaker trust me if anyone is not advancing "colored people" it would be this idiot. What a double standard.

Posted by blessed_momma (anonymous) on July 24, 2008 at 11:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

alsharp: I agree TOTALLY!! To scream "RACISM" has become a way to get what they want! What difference does it make, what color the skin is??!! WHAT does that have to do with ANYTHING? WHY, oh WHY does so many people have to live in pure HATRED? Now if it was reversed, a white person started screaming "RACISM" there would be a big naacp rally against the person!
HERE is the deal, we are ALL created by God. We will one day ALL be together in either Heaven or Hell. Is someone going to stand at the Pearly Gates and say, Im not going in, there are too many whites or too many blacks in there? I doubt it! NOW STOP THE RACE JUNK!!!!!!!! EVERYONE IS SICK OF IT! Its black against black!!! So, whats the problem?
