Texas con artist arrested by NPD
Published Tuesday, July 29, 2008
NATCHEZ — The Natchez Police Department is holding four people from Terrell, Texas — and one is a known con artist.
Sgt. Craig Godbold said the con artist has a hold placed on him by the U.S. Marshal Service and also one placed by the Terrell Police Department for larceny and escape.
“We know he’s a con artist and we’re trying to find out who all he may have been in contact with here in town,” Godbold said.
Godbold said he knows Darrien Glenn Hathcock, 45, No. 245, 1548 Country Road, Terrell, has already been to a local car dealership.
“That’s his MO, he goes to a car lot, tells them a bogus story and drives away with a new car without paying for it,” Godbold said.
While he may have already duped a car dealership in town, the business did get its car back.
The three other people who were arrested included Hathcock’s daughter, who will soon be released, Godbold said. All three are believed to be possible accomplices.
If nothing else, they are traveling companions, Godbold said.
Jody Machelle Dawson, No. 245, 1548 Country Road, Terrell, was arrested and Hathcock told authorities she was his wife.
Allen Shane Hill, 31, No. 308, 7662 Country Road, Terrell, was also arrested.
Hathcock is also facing charges in Concordia and Catahoula parishes.
Hathcock was arrested Tuesday morning at a hotel in Gloster.
He is being held as the investigation continues, Godbold said.

I would love to know what story he used to drive away with a new car. Surely he didn't just say it was for a test drive?

When I go to test drive a car, most of the time, the salesman has to ride with me, and I'm local...so, it's their own fault for trusting him. Other times when I was allowed to take the car out on a test drive without the salesman, the dealership made a copy of my drivers license.
I have to wonder if the salesman is still working at that dealership?

Exactly Peace007! Everytime I have test driven a car, that's what happened to me as well. I guess this is a lesson learned! Long gone are the days where they handed you the keys and you made the block.

That's all it takes to get a new car now?

So WHAT'S the guy's last name that was arrested? I saw 3 different last names--HATHcock, HATCHcock, and HATcock. Anyway, way to go Sgt. Craig! Also, glad to hear the dealership got their vehicle back.

sayitloud...the main "nut-house" is actually in Mississippi...it is called Whitfield...maybe you should go check it out..especially the one area for the "criminally insane". I had to take psych nursing classes there for practicium, believe me it is the worse of the worse.
Before you start making "snide remarks" about an area in a state, you need to look in your states "back yard".
I grew up in Natchez, and believe me, there are a lot of "con artists" there too.

Hang um at dawn. Or you will have to arrest them next week somewhere down the road.

That's how Damon Henderson got a car in Baton Rouge! Makes you wonder about these dealerships!
There really is an asylum in Terrell.

ksuplady15 I'm SURE you spent a nice long time at Whitfield but I was merely making an observation that THEIR mental hospital is in Terrell.
And thank you starla, people seem to think the only nut house is in Whitfield!

I believe every state has at least one state run insane asylum, and several private ones, so I don't get the point of ksuplady's post.

Who is Porky? What car dealership allowed the guy to take the car without paying for it first?
I'm thinking that the dealerships will do the tighten up after this.

Porky is a salesman who USED to work at one of the car dealerships here. I didn't really find the remark very funny..

You can leave a car lot WITHOUT paying for a vehicle... I have had them offer to let me drive it the weekend and decide if I want to buy it.... AND I have had them only let me test drive it around the block WITH a saleman only.... just all depends on the circumstances at the time... and if you are a con artist, I guess it depends on how convincing you are and how good a story you can come up with.... just my opinion...

We have also taken home vehicles, but since we ususally buy from the same dealership, they know us. This person was a stranger - too weird!
Posted by sunkitty (anonymous) on July 30, 2008 at 5:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)
When i worked in car sales we had to make a copy of the person's driver's license. We always had to do the test drive with the customer. I would love to know what this person's story was that enabled him to drive off with a free car!!!

Maybe he used a Bill of Exchange. I heard about a guy out in Texas that got 12 Cadillacs in one day doing that. He ended up in jail though.

Ok Enki - I'll show my ignorance - What's a Bill of Exchange?
My inquiring mind wants to know.

You would have to be a complete idiot to believe it!

same thing got him in trouble in fort worth few years ago
guess some people don't ever learn even when they get chance after chance to change.
but the dealerships are stupid to fall for any story and let someone drive off with a car i don't care how good a con man the person is supposed to be...
and what about giving hot checks for cars doesn't anyone call the bank and verify funds anymore... duh!!!!!
seems to have some pretty stupid people running together if u ask me...and the correct way to spell his name is
Hathcock....
