We can't negotiate with murderers

Published Thursday, July 31, 2008

I would like to address the recent comments on capital punishment. My position is that we do not execute enough convicted death row inmates.

The recent letter writers’ positions on killing in general leaves me to think that they are one of those “bleeding heart” liberal Democrats who think we can talk softly to our enemies and carry a small stick to get the job done. Maybe we should have just asked the British for our freedom when America wanted Independence. Maybe we should have asked Hitler not to kill all of those people. I am convinced by your comments that we could have persuaded Hussein to reduce the number of people he killed by at least 10,000 or so per year. You might go as far as to say that those who orchestrated the 9/11 attack should have been standing there with Al Gore to receive their peace award.

Those who think world peace is possible — forget it — that will never happen. There are too many people and not enough real estate. I came through the 60s also. I saw world problems as well as social injustice. I will conclude that your reference to the “old South” means that you are not originally from the South. People who came from other parts of the country to the “old South” to impose their ideas and values often compounded the problems they were trying to solve. As a result of their efforts, we have a more divided South than ever.

With all the attention and praise that Obama is getting from liberal Democrats, left wing news media, Hollywood stars, and other brainless, misguided people, you would think he is the second coming of Allah!

This man seems to share a common interest with you — America should lay down the guns, stop killing and open our borders so that those who do not believe in the America our forefathers founded can come here to take over this country. If this happens, you, being a Christian as stated, might find yourself as the enemy to these people who have no tolerance for religions other than their own.

Leave America the way it was founded. We have been the envy of the rest of the world — at least until liberal-based news media has spouted lies and demeaned the U.S. as a respected world power. What will the “A” in USA stand for one hundred years from now — Asia, Africa, or maybe Al-Quaeda? If you want to share this country and your wealth, share yours. I will be happy to keep mine and my guns!

Wow - if the food festival price caused the comments to be disabled - I can't see the comments lasting long for this!

I am for capital punishment for a few crimes - but I disagree with much of this letter.

Ok...we've heard from the paranoid schizophrenics in Ferriday. Now, will someone more rational speak up?

What's wrong Ex and Nat? Can't handle the truth? The patriots who founded and fought for the freedom we have today would agree that we have reached a point in our history where we must decide if the freedom we have is still worth fighting and dying for. I guess the "shot heard 'round the world" was fired by a paranoid schizophrenic in Concord. Enough of your name calling. Everyone has the right to their opinion and yours is no better than the next persons. And as far as being rational is concerned, your ability to rationalize is suspect. I want the borders of the United States of America closed and secured and all illegals deported. They are called illegals for a reason. They have no rights under our constitution other than a free ride back to where they came from.

And one last thing...the strength of our military affords us the peace that we have in our country today. Take away our true patriots, those who serve, and the civilians would be left to the wolves dressed in coats and ties who would hand our country over to the rest of the world to change to a form of government that pleases Allah. Not for me, thank you.

Look, SS, you start your article by stating that you are for executions. That's fine. That's your opinion. But then instead of stating the reasons why you are for executions and why you think it is a good idea, you rant for several paragraphs about liberals, "the liberal media", and God knows what else. You mentioned everything you hated in life, apparently, but you still failed to back up your position. Ok, that's your opinion. But, is it the truth? I am not convinced. Prove it.

Ex, please go see an opthomologist because your reading glasses are causing you to see things which aren't there. Nowhere did I mention liberals, "the liberal media" or anything that I might hate in life. Geeeszh! You call names, someone responds and you read something that wasn't written.

As far as the death penalty goes, I do believe in it because it is the law in most, if not all, states. The only problem that I have with it is that sentence should be carried out quickly instead of letting the convicted languish for 20 years in prison. We have the technology today to verify via testing, the guilt or innocence of all those convicted of a crime for which the death sentence is applied. The person on death row should have the ability to request testing of any evidence used against them. If the evidence shows they're guilty then proceed with the execution. If it shows they're innocent then release them. Just don't let these cases drag on for years. It is not fair to the family of the victims of the crimes or the criminals themselves.

No proof necessary...not trying to convince you....the truth will set you free!

ps I see that you capitalized God. You are probably Christian. Jesus said "render unto Cesar that which is Cesar's"...obey the laws of the government. When the law changes, so will my opinion.

Ok...SS, so you didn't write the above article "We can't negotiate with murderers" as it did mention "“bleeding heart” liberal Democrats and "left wing news media" -- which you deny saying. If that is the case, then I apoligize for assuming you wrote the article. And, by the way, it is spelled "Caesar," not "Cesar."

Thanks Ex...for the apology and the spelling lesson...I know better.

As a "bleeding heart liberal Democrat" let me say that the only reason I support the Democrats -- today -- is that the Republicans have proved themselves to be big-spending cynical and dishonest, corrupt charlatans who like the Pied Piper offer this vision of simplistic violent virtue to poor fools and get rewarded for it with a percentage of our tax dollars. They pluck the heartstrings of folks like Morgan for a percentage of the action, but they do not even care to obey the law themselves -- they fancy themselves as immune.

The question in leniency is whether you think life imprisonment in solitary is a sufficient punishment for our worse crimes as opposed to the more spectacular death penalty. The death penalty is only a great deterrent for God-fearing folks who wouldn't kill another anyway, unless they could pay the government to do it to someone and they didn't have to watch.

I know it's hard to admit that the use of our military in the Middle East actually caused 9/11, and the use of them in matters there today ensures reprisal -- because we miss too often. I know it's hard to believe that if you shoot at people they shoot back -- and some of them are even more determined or have less to lose than we do. Life's little challenges....

Morgan says leave the US the way it was founded. You could own black folks, pollute the river with whatever you wanted, shoot the Injuns when they didn't accept your claim to their land, and when they shot him back, you could bury poor Morgan on the prarie without even embalming him like you would have to today. God Bless America --- He,he!

Surprise, surprise! Another stupid conservative. What do issues of foreign policy have to do with the debate as to whether a government has the right to execute its citizens? These people simply rant and rave. There is absolutely no use in trying to have an intelligent, rational conversation with a conservative.

Yet another rant about the "liberal media" smearing America's image around the world. Conservatives can thank the president they love and venerate for that. This guy left out everything but Schexnayder's "secular socialists." What "liberal media?" Is the writer referring to NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN and the New York Times, who were nothing less than propaganda organs for the Bush Administration in the lead up to the Iraq War? Is he referring to the same "liberal media" that refused to challenge this administration's lies about "weapons of mass destruction", when intelligence sources both American and foreign said Iraq had no such weapons?

These right-wingers are pathetic stooges. Just the other day, I was watching the "liberal media" and they showed that gorilla that learned to do sign language. That ape is smarter than the average conservative.

Amen, Icono.

I wonder where folks who so distrust media get their information. Like if they pull it our of their rear it is more accurate than if the liberal media delivers the news?

It has been a political maneuver -- from one particular side -- for years to blow out of proportion the liberal boogey man who controls the media. Except for politcians who seek to manipulate the gullible, I honestly do not think anyone who does it knows how dumb it makes them look to lump all of their pet peeves into a liberal boogeyman conspriacy and wave the flag and their guns over the pile. It only really speaks to others just as bad off -- today's equivalent of the flat-earth types.

The media is SENSATIONALIST, not liberally biased. They are sensationalist because people who are bored with words will switch the channel if things don't tug at them.

Those politicians who take up this chant against the liberal media should be encouraging inquiry instead of talking people out of believing the news. Oh -- Gee -- if they don't believe the liberally biased media, they will believe a conservatively biased media and slam-dunk -- those folks are easy to fool. The Dumbing of America.

The world is far, far more complicated than any of us can appreciate. But some people's thinking is very simplistic and they are the ones most likely to pull the trigger.

Are you kidding? The Democrat loves this stuff. Look at the ed. page writers they print on a regular basis: K. Bartley, D. Schexnayder, A. Peabody, etc. The ND's favorite syndicated columnist is Michael Reagan. The Natchez Democrat has as many right-wing commentators as Fox News.

Remember when they thought AlQueida was responsible for the Anthrax? Turns out it wasn't them after all. But, we all believed them responsible at the time, because that's what we were told. What if it turns out that 9/11 wasn't them either? If that should happen, will we feel the urge to appologize for all the deaths; our soldiers, the Afghans, and the Iraqis, since 9/11?

As a country of Christian people, shouldn't we have faith that God would not allow any weapon formed against us to prosper?

What if we hurriedly executed everyone given the death penalty and then found out they were really innocent? Would you still feel the same way you do now about the death penalty?

Peace, I don't think the jury is in on the anthrax investigation, and this is an excellent example about this subject.

The investigation first harassed one man for years then apologized to him. This fellow committing suicide conveniently allowed the agency to come public without fear of their charges being questioned in court.

The only persons we know who are on the line for this -- the agency -- appear to be inept and without a person to blame, so the logical suspect for wrongdoing that we can see is the agency if this information is erroneous.

They have motive, they have been shown guilty of making baseless charges before, and they are the only ones that have anything to cover up as far as we know. Their jobs are on the line and they know it.

The moment we face -- just before the election, sees the Bush Administration needing to look like they were doing something to protect us and we know they will lie to make themselves look better. The agency is certainly under pressure from the admin to come up with something.

They would not be the first government workers to come up with a scheme to make them look better at the expense of the dead or the defenseless.

Let's not forget how many people are accused of terror related crimes only to be exonerated by a jury when the evidence is heard. THAT is the reality check.

This is an excellent example of how flawed law enforcement can be (God bless 'em), and the knuckle-draggers who miss this are the biggest threat to freedom as they empower the inept and give the government unbridled power to imprison and kill.

We are all just people and capable of error. It is ironic how bone-headed the politically conservative forces are that wish to give and exercise ultimate authority over life through government.

However we can not kill each other the make things better. If everybody use a gun to solve the problems of this world what will be left for the childern? What kind of life will they have? PRAY FOR PEACE.

Posted by Yeahuhuh (anonymous) on August 5, 2008 at 11:09 a.m. (Suggest removal)

natchezsouthside said it right. WE DO NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS!

We supported Benladin as long as he was our terrorist.

We supported the Contras in Nicaragua even though we knew they were drug-running, gun-running terrorists trying to undermine a sovereign government.

We supported the government of Argentina while they used terror against their opposition.

We supported Saddam Hussein in the Iran/Iraq War against the Iranians and before that and helped kill the million or so folks that got killed in that conflict.

On the one side we have strong countries that will kill folks or take their land to get their way. I love my country but we are one of them.

On the other hand we have folks -- usually not very large or strong -- who will launch attacks against those larger forces that most often started the killing or just took someone's land. These folks engaged in reprisal we call terrorists.

We create the terrorists' resistance and their attacks. They didn't make us do it -- they are reacting to what we chose to do because it was in our own interest at the time.
