Woman charged with felony child abuse
Published Saturday, August 2, 2008
NATCHEZ — Rashonda Seals took her child to the hospital Thursday night, but ended up in jail herself.
Seals, 21, 137 Lewis Drive, H-2, was arrested Friday morning on charges of felony child abuse, after doctors at Natchez Community Hospital discovered her son had blood on his brain. The child was then taken to University Medical Center in Jackson, where it was discovered that he had several internal injuries, Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said.
“We see very few cases this serious, with this much injury,” Mullins said.
Seals reportedly admitted to investigators that she had struck the child, but police do not know if the abuse had been ongoing.
“Felony child abuse is pretty serious,” Adams County District Attorney Ronnie Harper said.
In order for be convicted of felony child abuse, there has to be some kind of permanent harm to the victim.
The charge carries a sentence of 10 years up to life in prison, but because the level of injury can vary so widely, the judge has a lot of discretion.
“That’s a pretty broad statute,” Harper said.
The Department of Human Services took custody of the child, who is recovering.
Seals is being held on $45,000 bond.

rather do this to you're child, let someone else take the child, don't wait until the damage has already took place.

So many people would love to have a child....All she would have done is looked around a minute.....So many people would have done anything to have this child.....
They should show her NO mercy at all...

My sister adopted 2 precious little girls in 2002 thru DHS.The things that those 2 little girls endured should never had happened to them.People are still walking around that should be in jail.We sat in court while these so called parents rights were stripped. What is so sad is DHS is about putting families back together if at all possible but in the mean time little lives are being destroyed. As we set in court that day,my mind kept thinking that killing these so called animals would be to easy. What is so sad is that this same lady breader had other children i think 8 or 9 altogether most of them have been removed from her care.Did i tell you about the baby sister that was removed, put into the childrens home for awhile, DHS gave the little baby girl back along with my two nieces. That little girl was buried just a few days after putting her back with these people. You see it came out in court that their was suspicion about her death. My heart breaks for these children they talk about their little baby sister and wished she could have lived to be with them.MY sister fights everyday for these 2 little girls, you see there our children now and we will fight every day to keep them safe.

I wonder how old the child was...or did I overlook it?!

I think she should have enough mercy to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. "Where's the father? [I wonder]." What visible, or non-visible signs of injury, caused her to bring the child to the hospital to begin with?

she no longer deserves to be a mother.

I wonder how old the poor little fellow is.
Why do people have children and then treat them so badly? Have a baby, get a check and then realize it isn't as easy and as good as you thought. Now you're angry at yourself, the guy that doesn't care about you or the child and you take it out on the little innocent person who didn't have any control about being born into your mess.
That's brilliant.

the only thing we that can be hoped for is while she is sitting in jail is that someone does her the same way! Was she on drugs are just crazy! I hope DHA does not give the child back ro her or to anyone in her family! GOD PLEASE BE WITH THE CHILD! Yes it true some people have kids to draw a check and food stamps but there is more to having a baby than that and they need to be taught that before they have one but that all they see and know.

Didn't she ever watch lifetime, come on for pete's sake. You beat your child, the kid gets sick, you rush em to the ER, didn't it dawn on this idiot that they were going to throughly examine the child, and find these injuries.
Thank God this was one child saved, recently in Minnesota a 4 yr old boy was left in the care of his cousin while his dad was serving time in the workhouse, the kid soil his pants and this 34yr old mother of 4 beat the baby to death and had her kids to hold him down while she beat him, the kid layed on the bed for a couple of days DEAD, so she called to cops to report the kid missing and when the police did a search of her home there this poor baby lifeless body was stuffed in a garbage bag and hidden under a Christmas tree. What makes the case so sad it that his father trusted her and during her trial she was asked why did she do it and she had no answer, so she is now serving I think 45 yrs in prison. Forty-five years will never bring this child back, now this is a case where the death penalty should kick in.
I wonder the age of this baby, and if she gets the child back she will do it again and again until she kills the baby.

Children are innocent and the thought of someone beating on a defenseless child makes my blood boil. Give the child a chance and keep them away from the mother forever. I get sick of everytime you look around there is some baby producer out there pumping out kids from different sperm donors just to give them some kind of income. The kids hardly have a chance in life. They should take all of the kids away and sterilize that woman then put here away.

Did anyone read on yahoo about the mother that let her disbled teenage child die from starvation? This is horrible and when I read it, it made tears come to my eyes. She was 14 years old and only weighed 42 lbs. Her mother was embarrassed because she had cerebral palsy. They also indicted social workers for not accurately reporting how the child was doing. They have charged 9 people in connection with her death!

YUP, CUT, TIE, THATS ALL I CAN SAY, I CANNOT PHATHOM that a parent could harm this defenseless child, also, at the same time, i cannot phathom the sleepy little town i was born & raised in natchez, ms. having so much crime.

All of our children have done things in the past that warranted correction. You wait until you are not angry and then you correct them while explaining why you are doing this. You don't beat them. Usually they do bad things to get attention.
Since rashonda is only 21 she probably doesn't have but 4 or 5 kids. This little one perhaps felt left out--feeling that one of the others was getting all the attention. In all probability she doesn't have a husband to take care of the children, so they would be wards of the state for the 25 years or so in Parchman that she should get. So I'm going to have to pay for all their needs.
This isn't fair to me. I raised my sons without putting them in the hospital. They grew up and have sons and daughters of their own. Now, because of someone's ignorance, we're going to have to help raise more children.
It's just not fair.

This is tragic but let's let the authorities work this one out.
For every clear cut case of abuse there is another that looks bad but takes a while to sort out and is often not what it appears to be.
Everybody wants to hang the accused immediately, but that is the same sort of attitude that leads to slapping a child too hard, or trying to shake some sense into one who is being "bad". It's an attitude that is abusive and too often equals inappropriate action.
Make the child safe, let the authorities do their work, and the folks who want to stand up to enact the same punishment without knowing the facts should go to church.
Some of you folks remind me of the angry crowd in a Frankenstein movie, ready to burn the castle down. Then there's always someone on the edge of the crowd whining about having to pay for black folks' imperfection.

COOPER3K1, I read it and I nearly cried, maybe she wanted the disability check, it said the other kids were ok though, and not to mention the nursing agency falsified the records and all, could you imagine a child laying on a mattress for months or days so long that the body print was in the mattress when the lil girl's body was moved and to think of the stink in the house with the urine and the feces, I think that mother should be deprived of her right to eat, or put her in a room with no running water let her pee and $##t on herself, and let her see how that child may have felt.

I don't know whether she's black or white, or why it should matter at all. In all fairness, though, I've met fair few white "Rashonda"s in my day.
More family planning options around this area could probably help out a lot.. at least by reducing the amount of children being born to violent, self-absorbed idiots.
There ARE worse things than not being born.. such as, being born in to a mother who does permanent disabling injury to you or makes your few early years a misery until someone hits you hard enough to kill you. Even worse, should you live through that kind of childhood abuse, DHS is determined to keep you with the morons who are ruining any chance you have at growing up to be a healthy, sane, productive person.
Think about it.. this is a case of abuse which has been discovered because the woman at LEAST thought she'd better bring her child to the hospital. How many people don't even bother to get treatment for the ungodly things they do to their children? How many people are "smart" enough to avoid discovery by keeping their children at HOME with major head trauma?
But no.. every pregnancy is supposedly a wonderful thing.. including illegitimate, unwanted pregnancies to unfit mothers and fathers. Let's get some freakin' birth control out here, already.

Oh Fire, excuse me if this particular set of whines about daddys not being at home, mommas getting a paycheck for a houseful of babies, having children to draw foodstamps and a paycheck, yada yada yada wasn't about black folks. How could I have been so dumb?
Maybe I just assumed like the last 12,000 or so times I heard that language used about an article about a girl named Rashonda, that the complainers were waxing poetic about the imperfections of black folks.
Maybe I am just too racist? Or honest! He,he!

OMG I can't believe DHS is actually doing their job this time. How many times have I reported this one particular woman? Only to be told, "We'll check into it.", and nothing is done. This little girl I'm referring to lives in Natchez, has a fat, lazy, sorry excuse for a mother. She won't get her stupid butt up and get a freaking job, or even walk her baby to the bus stop so she won't miss school, but she thinks nothing of giving her FITAP money to a guy so he can buy a beer, or some crack, or marijuana. FITAP MONEY PEOPLE!!!! This worthless piece of crap has been in the welfare system since she was a KID and now all her kids are in it too. This poor child has open, weeping lesions on her body, her shoes and clothes are way too small for her, and there is NO BATHROOM or RUNNING WATER in their house. The floors are falling through, and there are rotten food and dishes all over the freaking house. Her father has tried NUMEROUS times to get her out of there, but everytime he shows up the dumb broad sends her out of town.
When will DHS actually LISTEN to the reports that are being called in to them? When will they even care? I'm really surprised that they even acted on this case; then again, the hospital was the one reporting it, so by law they had to act on it.

Yes, he is a black baby. But for all of you who feel that you are too racist, it's usually someone white who does these things. (drowns children, locks them up for years as sex slaves, leaves them in dumpsters, etc.) As for the father of the child, he died several months ago. His mother had cared for the baby for a while. I don't know what happened that she is not taking care of him anymore.

whatever ...please do not quit reporting this mother to DHS; call Jackson and report it as an emergency. Call the sheriff's dept. and ask to speak directly to a deputy and let them come check on the child; you can do this all anonomously with no questions asked. The mother you are speaking of needs to have a case started against her immediately.

I read this story (the link below) online earlier today, it's sad and it really distrubed me. You talk about child abuse? This is really bad and the people who did it and/or allowed it to happen should be bound, gagged, covered in blood and thrown in a pit full of angry rottweilers.....................for starters. Officials in Philadelphis Pa. are calling it the worst case of child abuse they've ever seen.
http://www.wtop.com/index.php?nid=104&am...
The folks who do things like this against children are the lowest of the low, I wouldn't treat a rabid dog this way. The kid in the above link died and now it time for someone to pay, and they should, but this isn't going to bring the kid back. Individuals to commit acts like this shouldn't be allowed to breathe or breed. I'm sorry for ranting but this is WRONG!

children raising children, it's sad
these youngsters that are having children, before they can earn a decent living, need to learn abstinanace and birth control-- other than abortion I might add. I was shocked to learn that kids in the public schools are getting condoms handed out to them IN THE FOURTH GRADE!!!!! They are being misled as to the consequences of sex and are being taught to have sex instead of being taught that ABSTINENCE is the best policy. There is NO danger in abstinence. Abstinence is a 100% effective technique.
The stress of raising a child without adequate resources and without a certain level of maturity attained by the parent must be immense, but no excuse for such injury.
I do support corporal punishment, appropriate and controlled, but not dished out in rage resulting in harm to the child.
I know most parents will snap and raise their voice and spank their child from time to time and feel guilty, but this is a whole different level of uncontrolled violence beating a kid and causing significant injury, and deserves social services and the State of MS to step in and take custody of the child, and any other children she may have, plus arrest and punishment as has happened.
My commendations and praise to the emergency staff at the hospital and to the police for taking action

yes you are right, the great socialization of the USA and the redistribution of wealth
used to be you had to take care of your own, now it's have all the sex anad kids you want and let someone else pay the bills- our taxes which OBAMA wants to raise.
at least even Obama is preaching for more responsibility within the family unit, but at the same time he is all for abortion of all types. He even supports after birth abortion, which is just another word for infant murder.

family planning? did you know that the family planners killed 250,000 babies last year alone? I think there have been enough infant murders. And enough kids brought into this world under irresponsible parents - I agree with you there. Kids are being taught to have sex by being misled by having condoms given to them at school. To the kids this is affirmation that it's ok to have sex without a significant relationship and without thinking things through.
Stop giving the kids condoms and start teaching abstinence, self-discipline, responsibility, morality.

take a look at the Adams Co sex offenders website
you will see that most of these are offenses against juveniles and that the racial mix of the offenders is not significantly slanted toward either white or black
I don't know about the child abuse cases, but I don't care whether it's a black thing or a white thing, either way it's wrong.

The_Punisher, thanks for the link to the article that I was referring to earlier.
I also believe in corporal punishment. My parents used switches when we were kids and it was nothing for our legs to be striped with redmarks. They loved us and wanted us growing up knowing what was right and wrong and to respect other people. They did not abuse us in any way and to this day I am thankful that they discipline us and kept us walking a staight line.

It never ceases to amaze me how freaking ignorant people can be. Who gives a damn about what color a battered and bruised child is? The key word here is child. A person who cannot protect themselves from the monster that is supposed to protect him. Why does it matter what crimes white folks do to children vs. what crimes black folk do to children? You people can turn the resurrection of Christ into a race issue!! It is beyond pathetic!!! A child is hurt, period!! Pray for the child or shut the hell up!!!

True this young lady obviously needs help and punishment however, most of you are so quick to judge without knowing the facts. The father is deceased and trust me if he were alive today we wouldnt be reading this article. Many of you are just simple bloggers, you have nothing more to do than post comments. If this situation has really touched your hearts rather than blog why dont you set up a bank account for the child or purchase items for the child, Im sure whomever has him in their custody will need the extra help because certainly this has affected their income(put your money where your blog is). Would you be so strong to react or blog if this had been one of your family members? Stop being talkers and become doers beacuse if you're not part of the progress you're part of the problem. You know what is so sad,if this mother is pregnant, and they let her out of jail, she will get to keep the baby, that is until the child has been thru so much abuse, then they will step in and take the child. Then they as in" DHS " will offer her classes on parent hood and if she passes them, they will put this child right back into the home.I know this for a fact.Like i said my sister and her husband adopted two children out of DHS.We were there when these idiots rights were terminated.Mayby if they had done this earlier, the children's lives would'nt have been put thru so much abuse. One thing that sticks in my mind today is while in court. All these names were brought out and still noone spent one day in jail. They baby sister that died while in the mothers care you can't bring her back.We found out later there were older children that were took from these same people.I just don't understand how the law let's this happen.Since then she's had two more children one is with someone else and the other is with the mother. They wait until the kids have gone thru so much abuse, before they try to do something about getting these kids out.My sister and her husband deals everyday with problems that these two little girls has had to face, the challenges can almost be unreal. But there ours and by the grace of God,we will do whatever to protect them from all harm!
