Chase involves shots

NATCHEZ — A 10-minute car chase led to an arrest and five deputy-fired gunshots in Downtown Natchez Sunday.

At 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Natchez Police Department patrol officers saw a Ford F150 running stop signs on Commerce Street.

Police Chief Mike Mullins said the officers caught up with the driver on Canal Street and signaled him to pull over using blue lights and sirens.

When the driver, Marcus Lorenzo McDonald, 32, 19 S. Sunflower Road, did not pull over, the chase began.

At that point, sheriff’s deputies joined NPD officers in the pursuit.

McDonald turned on John R. Junkin Drive and crossed the Mississippi River Bridge into Vidalia.

After traveling approximately one mile, he turned around and crossed the bridge back into Natchez.

While in Vidalia, one Vidalia Police Department patrol car joined in the pursuit, as well.

From the bridge, McDonald traveled down John R. Junkin and, near the Natchez Mall, ran over stop sticks placed by Natchez police officers.

The sticks, which contain spikes, were successful in deflating the front right tire, Adams County Sheriff Ronny Brown said.

Mullins said this slowed the car down significantly but McDonald didn’t give up his flight.

He then turned onto Lower Woodville Road, where Mullins said he threw what officers presumed to be narcotics out of the passenger side window.

Mullins said they were unable to recover any narcotics.

McDonald continued on Lower Woodville until he turned right on River Terminal Road, he then turned right on Lewis Drive, then turned on Providence Road.

From Providence, he traveled back onto John R. Junkin which he took to Canal Street.

He was headed in the direction of Madison Street when sheriff’s deputies decided to take action to finally stop him.

Two deputies fired three shots at the vehicle and were successful in taking out one of the tires on the left hand side of the car.

Mullins said since McDonald was moving toward a residential area, it was imperative to stop him in whatever way possible.

“At that point, he’s driving a deadly weapon,” he said.

Brown agreed.

“We had to stop him,” he said.

The loss of two tires was still not a deterrent and McDonald pressed on, taking Madison Street up to Martin Luther King Jr. Street.

From Martin Luther, he turned left on St. Mary Street, then turned right on Union Street, then took another right onto Lincoln Street.

Sheriff’s deputies fired two more shots and took out the other tire on the left side of the car.

McDonald chugged on for a few more blocks, turning right onto Claiborne Street and then right on Martin Luther King Jr. Street.

In the 900 block of that street, he pulled over and ran into the bayou.

“When the officers were trying to get him to come out, he yelled, ‘Come and get me MF’s,’” Mullins said.

He resisted arrest and was finally disabled when a deputy used a taser gun to get him under control.

He was handcuffed and transported to NPD where he received charges of felony fleeing a law enforcement officer and unauthorized use of a vehicle in addition to reckless driving and no driver’s license.

Mullins said the unauthorized use charge was given because the truck did not belong to McDonald, it was a family member’s.

A total of two deputy cars and two police cars were involved, as was the VPD unit.

Mullins said the chase was not high speed, that McDonald slowed down at intersections and only got up to about 60 mph and that was when he was crossing the bridge.

“If it had been 100 mph, it would have been called off,” Mullins said, because at that point, the lives of police officers would have been endangered.

Though no bond has been set, Mullins said he hopes McDonald receives strict punishment.

“This individual endangered the lives of several police officers and many citizens,” he said. “He should pay a high price for his actions.”

Once NPD has charged and arraigned McDonald, he will be charged with aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer by ACSO.

McDonald has a criminal history.

“He is familiar with law enforcement,” Brown said.

In September 2007, he was indicted by a grand jury for burglary of a storehouse.

“He’s alleged to have driven a vehicle into a business and stolen an ATM machine,” Mullins said.

March 3, 2000, he was charged with armed robbery which was reduced to simple robbery.

He was sentenced to serve 10 years, but was released on parole after serving half that time.

He also has numerous misdemeanor charges, Brown said.

Brown and Mullins both agreed this was a good example of the police department and the sheriff’s office working together.

Though it initially began as the police department’s chase, Brown said his deputies were nearby and got the call to help out.

“We work fine together,

Brown said.

I saw the chase and they are withholding information because there was a passenger and he jumped out the truck. While the truck was rolling. He was then arrested by a NPO.

Look like to me it was three people in the truck but whatever. And to ML if all those police officers where behind you because you didnt stop at a stop sign thats crazy. I am so glad didnt anyone get hurt Natchez hasnt ever had a chase to happen like that, they didnt know what to do. Shooting and no one in the truck had any weapons. Whats really going on?

I was standing on Canal St. when they came by and for them to say the shooting happened when no one was around they are wrong, I was at Canal and State St. I saw with my own two eyes a deputy shooting out of his passenger window. Im glad thy caught this piece of crap, but I think deputies should have used more caution when they were shooting, bullets dont have names on them.

Posted by ILOVEME08 (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 3 p.m. (Suggest removal)

From what I understand it was two men in the truck and when they went in Susie B West apartments one jumped out and a police officer jumped out and caught him. I was on Woodlawn when ML wrecked the truck and it did not have any tires. He jumped out the truck and ran down into a deep ditch behind the carwash and police officers and deputies ran after him. Bout five minutes later they was dragging him out in handcuffs.

yes sheriff and police you did a good job someone has to make a move on this kind of person, sorry goldie you were around, but glad no one was hurt police know when and where to shoot, i am sure they knew or at least hope so that the bullet would not hit anything. i was told the bullets hit the tires and that is what made it possible to stop it . yes dangerous, but these men do a dangerous job everyday we should give him a medal now the citizens should thank our law officers for stopping this man. it is not their fault this man is on the street. he is out on a bond from a felony charge last year when will we get enough i thank you mr policeman or deputy that shot this mans tire out before he killed someone I CANNOT DO YOUR JOB, AND SOMEONE HAS TO DO IT FOR US AGAIN THANKS

iluvntz this didn't all happen because MLM didn't stop at a stop sign, he was in a stolen vehicle.

Posted by Preacher246 (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 3:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Why wasn't he charged with anything more??? I am glad the police and deputies could get their adrenaline fix for the week, especially putting so many lives in danger. Would have been different if a tourist was killed. Speaking of national headlines.

Posted by iluvntz (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 3:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

O yea good job NPD for making a big screen like that. I thought ML had did something terrible this whole thing would have been avoided if yall wouldnt have harrassed him at the stop sign being that no one really stops anyway they only pause at those stop signs downtown.
And he was only charged with two things Great Job!!

Posted by GOLDIE (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 3:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree with you Andy i hear a lot of people saying they were driving to crazy and they should have just him go and pick him up another day. Well if that were done what type of message does that send to these scumbags, they can do something and not stop for police and deputies and get away with it. I can say that was like watching something off TV lets start paying these brave men and women for what they do. Just think if that idiot would have had a gun, we could be reading a totally different story today. NPD ACSO YOU ROCK!!!!!!! And I dont doubt he knew where he was shooting I was just scared out of my mind.

Don't the sheriff's office have a shooting range to practice at. Sounds like someone needs to use it.

Posted by GOLDIE (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 3:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Here come the negative comments. Iluvntz if he were innocent and only pausing at stop signs why did he run the way he did. How was he harrassed? The article says he's charged with fleeing, which is a felony. I do beleive it said he's also being charged with aggravated assault, a felony. And I research it, this is the same idiot that ran a vehicle into cellularsouth last year and tried to steal the money machine, but didn't get jack. Oh yeah was't he also charged in Florida for Grand Theft. Lock this fool up! Real news we don't know if he was pausing at stop signs or running straight through them God forbid if one of your family members had been around and got hurt by this fool. Then you would be singing where were the police. Damn if they do, Damn if they dont.

Posted by vanluna (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 3:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If the sheriff's deputies or police would have just let this thug go when he didn't stop they would have been criticized for not doing their jobs and sending a message out to the other thugs to run if the cops try to pull you over because they will not pursue you. Instead they pursue this guy and are still blamed for putting so many lives in danger. This thug MLM is to blame, had he pulled over like the cops wanted him to do in the first place no chase would have been necessary. The cops were doing there jobs and MLM was the one causing people's lives to be put in danger. Think of all the thugs and crime that would go in the area if the thugs new they could run from the cops and the cops would just let them go.

We make mistakes all the time and try to correct those we make. We want to get the facts correct as they are told to us. So when Brown called us with more info we corrected our story as soon as we got the information. If we are wrong we will correct it again.

thanks ben sounds like the sheriff wanted the story right more power to him, I can never get him to blog, he is smarter than that, but I donot blame him you can never win on a blog but anyway again whether it was the city or couty that stopped this man, he needed off the street this is nothing new, happens everywhere everyday. I remember when sheriff brown took over and the county chased a car 50 miles in louisiana and brought that man back. this was the same type thing, that man tried to run over a deputy and he ended up in the pen, maybe this one will or at least they know the adams sheriff will chase you, run you down and bring you back. (lesson needed to be learned by criminals)

Goldie remember if you try to argue with ignornace you can never win, they will only beat you down to their level. It's ashame that sometimes someone has to act up on here when others are trying have discussions and argue their opinions. It's nice to hear other people's view points on serious matters. But just like the outside world, the net has it's fair share of ignorant people. Some things we can't escape.

THE LONGER IT WENT ON THE MORE DANDEROUS IT WAS TO OUR CITIZENS. I'VE KNOWN ONE OF THE DEPUTIES MOST OF HIS LIFE.HE IS MORE THAN QUALIFIED TO MAKE THE DECISION HE MADE.HE HAS HAD MORE TRAINING THAN PROBABLY ANYONE ELSE ON ANY POLICE OR SHERIFFS DEPT. IN THIS AREA.I THINK WE SHOULD BE MORE WORRIED ABOUT THE LAW ENFORCEMENT THAT SIT IN THEIR CARS JUST TO DRAW A CHECK. I WOULD TRUST THIS DEPUTY WITH MY LIFE AND TRUST ME ,HE SHOT EXACTLY WHAT HE WAS AIMING FOR. HOPE TO SEE MORE OFFICERS OF THIS CALIBER ON THE JOB SOON.

SHERIFF RONNY BROWN HAS NO CONTROL OF THAT OFFICE. IT IS NOT JUSTIFIABLE FOR DOES BIRD BRAIN DEPUTIES TO SHOOT TIRES OUT ON A VEHICLE AND A RESIDENTIAL AREA OR ON A BUSY STREET LIKE CANAL. I WANT TO KNOW ONE THING ,WHERE THEY GIVEN AUTHORITY TO USE DEADLY FORCE? BY ARE IDIOT SHERIFF OR HIS PUPPET CHEIF DEPUTY CHARLES SIMS. ANYTIME YOU USE DEADLY FORCE AS A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER IT MUST BE JUSTIFIED.

The cops were hanging out of the windows shooting in downtown Natchez! Even in Los Angeles when there is a car chase they are more careful and mindful of their citizens....NO shooting should be downtown of Natchez or ANY town.

IN MOST ORGANIZED AND PROFESSIONAL DEPARTMENTS IN A SITUATION LIKE THIS YOU MUST GET APPROVAL FROM A SUPERVISOR.

Posted by natchez500 (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 5:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

sayitloud yes you are on brown and sims, but they are in office and won by 80% of the voters why don't you run for sheriff and sit in his seat just for one day

i like the part andy about going to the grand jury I think if these deputies or police did wrong or broke policy and procedures, they would be punished sheriff brown has had his own employees and chief mullins has also arrested his employees for committing crimes I think this proves my point I do not see any favors given out by either department do you want criminals to think they can just do anything or just run from police after committing a felony and get away with it sounds like you wouldn't be a good candidate for either one of these mens job I AGAIN THANK ALL THE AGENCIES FOR GETTING THIS MAN OFF THE STREET. LOOK AT HIS CRIMINAL RECORD AND DO YOU WANT HIM STILL RUNNING FROM POLICE AND THEM LETTING HIM GET AWAY WITH IT WHAT IF HE KILLED A KID WITH THAT TRUCK AND WONDER WHAT HE THREW OUT WHEN RUNNING FROM POLICE THIS MAN HAD TO BE STOPPED AND THE LAW WAS RIGHT

Posted by natchez500 (anonymous) on August 4, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

APPROVAL POTTERS WAS ON DUTY AND THE POLICE ASKED THE SHERIFF TO HELP AND ASSIST THEM FOR YOUR INFO I HEARD SIMS WAS CALLED DURING THIS CHASE AND YES BOTH DEPARTMENTS ARE PROFESSIONAL WHY DON'T YOU MOVE ACEDOG IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT HERE IS IT SAFER IN JACKSON OFFICERS YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR JOB I AM FOR YOU ALL

natchez500 you noticed not one natchez police officer fired a shot because they have structure over there , they have a supervisor on duty at all time, like most professional and organized departments do. someone must be held accountable for the complete disregard of human life by these bird brain deputies. the chase started off with misdemeanor charges not felony. you don't put the public at risk. a bullet truly doesn't have a name on it! i want to see the bad guys off the street as much as the next guy

The more you bash law enforcement and punish officers for stopping thugs like this the more they get the idea they can run ,get away and committ more crimes. So all you bashers keep up the bashing and you will bring the officers down to your level.

Let me get this straight. The ND said this man led them on a ten minute chase. He took off from Commerce, went down Canal, onto Hwy 84, over the bridge into Vidalia, u-turned and went back across bridge into Natchez, got road-spiked on John R. Junkin, went down Lower Woodville and River Terminal Road, then back down Canal, onto Madison, all the way to MLK. And this took only ten minutes? This guy must have been bookin' it. It's a wonder there wasn't a wreck and that no one got killed.

I've been saying it on here with the rash of crimes last week that Natchez is getting just as bad as Jackson and Baton Rouge when it comes to crimes per capita (and I do stress the per capita part). It's getting worse and worse.

Good job NPD, ACSO, and VPD.

I am sure they get in their police cars and ride around everyday waiting for someone to do something stupid so they can give ya'll something to talk about. Good for ya'll. One of these days, one of you will have the mishap of a crime commited against you, and you will be wondering where those police you call clowns are. They risk their life every time they get in their car and ride down the street, the sad thing is they want to do it for all of you unappreciative law abiding citizens. Live a week in Albuquerque, NM or Los Angeles, CA then when you know how many lives are endangered in a real police chase you will have something to talk about. What would you do if there were no police officers? All those innocent criminals would take over you sweet Natchez. This crap ya'll write is only good for nothing but a laugh. It used to be interesting to read what ya'll had to say, but now it's entertainment! There is a murder here every single day, everyone here is very happy to see their police on the street. Good Job NPD, ACSD, CPSO, VPD. Congratulations Kenneth Hedricks!

Shoots should not have been fired in a populated area to begin with. That is to risky. People live in houses and bullets can travel into houses. Should have tried to pit the vehicle before firing shots. Come on now this ain't the wild west boyz. Glad bystanders weren't injured.

mscoody:

Your point is well-taken. I agree with everything you have to say. I don't think people should slam the police like they do unless they have had to walk upon a vehicle full of unknown persons at 3 a.m. on a dark, deserted street.

The only thing I believe should be asked is whether or not pit maneuvers were attempted prior to shots being fired, and subsequently, was supervised authority given (if required) for shots to be fired? I think those are fair questions to be asked.

These men and women are TRAINED police officers, sworn to uphold the law. They are doing their best to serve and protect. Does the criminal ask for permission before attacking, killing, raping, kidnaping. No I don't think so, why can't anyone give the peace keeper the benefit of the doubt. I would bet money that every move they made was supervised. If you have ever ridden in a police car you would know they call in every single thing they do, just because we the citizen don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. A car ran a stop sign here in Abq, there was no wild moment for the police officer that stopped him, the car pulled quietly to a stop. As the officer approached the car, the criminal driving the car shot him point blank in the face with a .357 magnum, that simple stop was supervised, monitored, and allowed that murderer to be brought to justice. The streets of Albuquerque were lined with grieving citizens. If you could witness this (thank goodness you don't have that privilege) it would make you appreciate the men that risk their lives for you. Sure they make mistakes, but ...everybody does. I bet there is not one person that can say they don't make mistakes while performing their duties in their own occupation. These men are TRAINED NOT TO MAKE MISTAKES. It makes me so angry for people to sit back and point fingers. I grew up in Vidalia, there is crime there, but nothing like here in these big cities.

mscoody: I have ridden in a police car and that's why I said I understood exactly what you were saying. I agree with everything you were saying. I only said that I wondered whether or not any pit maneuvers were attempted before shots were fired and whether or not clearance was given to fire shots in a downtown area. We can't just assume that the answer is "yes", clearance was given. I don't believe these questions are unreasonable to ask.

BRAVO Mscoody!!!!!!!!! I couldn't have said it better myself. I hope this punk sits in prison until he's old and grey. Judges how many crimes does he have to commit before he gets what he deserves or are you waiting on him to kill someone. Personally besides scaring me to death I think NPD, ACSO, and VPD did a damn good job. Also the supervisor for NPD that let his men do what they are trained to do and go get this punk GOOD JOB.

You don't have to apologize to me mscoody. You haven't said anything to offend me. I was just wanting you to understand where I was coming from. I am not one of the people who are on here slamming the police. I have the utmost respect for police. I feel they are highly underpaid for the work, no service, they provide to the community. I just had a couple of thoughts after reading the article and was expressing them in questions. Sorry if I made you upset. Not my intentions. Thorninyourside, this statement was truly uncalled for this is a human being who happens to have a lot of issues, sometime we fail to realize that narcotics take over your mind and body, your are under a deep spell, and reality of one's actions are uncontrolled, have you ever watched Intervention, if not you should.
As for mscody, you sound very uptight about the citizens of Natchez comments on THEIR police officer did you get it THEIRS, no sorry this isn't Cali, Chicago, New York or Albuquerque, this is a small town where almost everyone know everyone especially the boys and girls in blue.
Just in my opinion, other measures should have been taken in residential neighborhoods where this incident occured, that required these officers to open fire, bullets have no shame and carry no names, wouldn't it have been sad if some innocent bystander would have been struck, accidents are unfortunate, so maybe the head person in charge, should have thought about the ok to fire and the FAT @## law suit that would have followed if someone was struck.

Therefore I don't care what happens to him. If you hadn't of caught him. Next week he would be robbing someones home and possibly hurting them in the process. So Thankyou again for a job well done.

Alright. I have an obvservation so to speak. Acedog, this is directed at you. If you were offered a job at ACSO, would you take it? Or just perhaps, you did have an interview and you simply failed it? It honestly sounds like you are disgruntled and angry on a level that is unhealthy. You should seek professional help. And honestly, typing in all caps, is really bad etiquette.

You have GOT to be kidding me - I do not have time to read all of these comments but the few I have hear just makes me so glad I do not live in that town anymore!!! BRILLIANT!!! The bottom line - the guy was running stop signs and HE decided to run from the cops!!!!!! The cops did not stage this event - they did a GOOD thing - got this idiot off the streets - no one got hurt and hopefully he is off the streets a LONG time now! It really makes me angry when people like to criticize police officers for the quick decisions they have to make - I sure don't see YOU out there trying to protect anyone!!!! YOU go do their job for the amount of pay they receive - maybe then you would SHUT your mouth! Yeah - there are crooked cops but there are crooked people in all lines of work - that's life - deal with it or go live in a hole!

Lookingout I am not saying he does not need to deal with his issues so what are YOU talking about, read my post over again if you wish. My POINT was the fact that the cops had a shoot out in a residential neighborhood were there are CHILDREN playing OK, and other measures to apprehend the subect COULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN!!!!!
If you are not in the medical profession, then please explain to me how you would know the effects that drugs have on a person.
Of course no one cares about his issues, you pay your time when you commit the crime easily said.

I know that pit manuevers look pretty on television but they are more dangerous than a bullet in the tire when a vehicle is going at high rates of speed.
Also, if it had been attempted and several city or county units had been totalled in the process, there would be some that would scream about money for vehicles.

Glad they used force to stop him and get him

I'm not for letting them go, even at 100 mph, I say get em and lock em up, and if they resist arrest, beat the hell out of em

McDonald will go away for a long time this time and hopefully without parole this time.

sayitloud - tell that nonsense you are spewing to the criminals

I say shoot em law enforcement, wherever you have the opportunity, it'll save us a lot of red tape, court costs, and time, not to mention tax dollars paying for incarceration. In the county, in the city, if the bad boys want to play rough and won't obey- then give em what they're asking for, a quick ticket to their Maker for judgement. Save us all a lot of anguish, continued violence, and fear on the streets. Take em out and clean up the garbage that seems to be piling up out there on the street. I don't see any point to cutting the bad boys any slack and taking any risks, the officers have their personal safety at stake as well as innocent citizens so any punk that wants to to play rough should get it right back in his face, but even rougher.

Krogers, I agree with sayitloud. I only know what I have read from this article, but if they were shooting out the window of a moving car THAT IS NOT SAFE. I am not sure what expereince you have with firearms, but a shoot out a moving vehicle is very hard and can miss very easily. If this was done in a residential neighborhood it could be borderline wreckless.

Posted by RobinBrownHayes (anonymous) on August 5, 2008 at 1:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The way I read the article was that they were trying to shoot the tires out, which is what they did. Bravo!!!!!! I'm glad they have the nads to do what has to be done. Although I no longer live there, I do have family there and want to keep idiots like this guy off the streets whatever it takes.

Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on August 5, 2008 at 1:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Mike- maybe you can't hit the broadside of a barn when you shoot, but some of us can hit what we're aiming at, whether standing still or from a moving car. I can hit a gallon jug at 50 yards with my .45 handgun (5 in barrel) so I feel confident that NPD or ACSO can hit a car tire at 20 - 30 yards which is what I am guessing the range was. They were shooting DOWN at car tires you know, not UP at the suspect's head, (which may have been a better choice all things considered). But I do appreciate the police's restraint in being patient and only shooting at the tires as the chase wore on and it became quite evident this guy was NOT surrendering without a fight.

and I know the officers have to train with their weapons, so I trust them, and applaud their action (clapping of hands and hoooorrrraaahhhh!!)

Shoot em up GOOD GUYS, take em down HARD!!!!!

I say it's a lot more dangerous to let the bad guys get away and allow them to do more stealing and killing than to take a measured risk and GET EM LOCKED UP OR DEAD!!!

I'm getting tired of you pansies not wanting the punks put away in this town, there is too much crime going on and the only way to stop it is to get tough on the bad boys and I mean tough as nails, make em hurt bad, of course not police brutality or anything, but justified self-defense only.

Posted by mike8427 (anonymous) on August 5, 2008 at 2:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Krogers - I'll challenge you to any shoot off you want to have, been shooting all my life, and 6 years in the military. I have shot from the ground, from vehicles and from helicopters and I know how hard some shots can be. Shooting from a moving car, on the terrible roads in Natchez in a residential neighborhood would not be worth the risk.

Great job. Shows what working together as a team can do. These officers involved should all recieve an award for a job well done and thanks for living up to your code to "serve and protect". These officers get paid so little to do so much.
As for "RealNews" and "acedog" maybe both of you should move to Jackson where they have more crime and you can complain how their police/sheriffs depts handle crime there. We are lucky to have both Chief Mike Mullins and Sheriff Ronnie Brown running our law enforcement here in Natchez!! We have good leadership in both depts.

Mike; I am not here to start an argument. That being said...SAFE? How safe is a doped out ex-convict driving around town in a stolen vehicle, ignoring law officers signals to pull over and blatantly evading and running from them? What else was this character planning for the evening? I agree with another poster that pointed out that the shooting was done at a downward angle towards the tires...a typical police action. Good going officers, and thank you.

Noneya, I know you aren't trying to argue, and I am not either. I stated when I started this discussion, I only know what I read from the article. I don't know what angle or what distance these shots were made. I do know that a firearm is for taking out people. If they were close enough to use a firearm, then they could have used their vehicle to stop them right? We are all making alot of assumptions, but I think we would all agree that shooting a weapon in a residential neightborhood is dangerous. That was my point.

Mike , I have also served my time in the military and taken shots from the ground , vehicles and helicopters in combat. Many of the comments I have seen posted here are made from assumptions so I would like to state some facts. The first deputy to fire shots on Canal St. fired one shot at the rear driver side tire. The shot was fired not from 20 to 30 yards but from 5 to 10 yards with a Hydroshock round at a downward angle while he was right beside the truck. The shot reached the objective. The next two shots on Canal St. were fired in the same manner at the driver side front tire and also reached the objective although it did not deflate the tire. The second series of shots were fired while the sqaud car was stationary and well aimed shots were taken and the passenger side rear tire was disabled. Yes , the pit may have been sucsessful at some point but keep in mind this was a large pick up truck capable of tearing right thru a crown vic (especially with out push bumpers). The driver also attempted to strike police cars several times. Under state law deadly force is authorized to stop the suspect , gun or no gun , so the way I see it the Deputies were merciful. This will be my only post , I hope this information has been helpful. God Bless.

So let me get this right, if a criminal pulls a gun on a police officer he must say, " wait let me contact my supervisor and see if i get permission to shoot you". No No i dont think so. You got a chip on your shoulder im guessin cause you cant get a job at the S.O. youre prolly a security gaurd at Ilse of Capri drinkin cokes and pretending youre at Broward County S.O. with the white shirts like you saw on cops. This post was intended for the more recent/updated article on this incident, but as the comments have been disabled, I'll post my comment here.

The headline reads, "Top Officials: chase, shots OK"

Then everything must be OK? Right? Sorry, but what else would these folks say? "I did not have sex with that woman", "I'm not a crook", "I have sinned"...

What's wrong with questioning the actions of our law enforcement officers, when deadly force is applied in the narrow confines of downtown Natchez? There's more than one way to skin a cat isn't there? What's with the "Yer either wid us or agin us" mentality?

If no one voices concern over issues such as the ones surrounding this case, then this simply becomes the status quo. No questions asked - business as usual - shoot first and ask questions later. It wasn't all too long ago that young people died in an accident, the result of a car chase through Natchez. How often do these situations have to occur before law enforcement officials come up with a new strategy or alternative course of action to deal with individuals who seek to evade officers of the law?

This is a small town. Couldn't the perpetrator be picked up later? Are these cruisers equipped with video cameras? Wouldn't video footage suffice for a transcript of the alleged crime?

I do support our law enforcement officials, but I am entitled to ask questions too. That's a right guaranteed by our constitution... and if you don't use your rights, then you are apt to lose them.
