Local man beaten, robbed

Published Tuesday, August 5, 2008

VIDALIA — A 36-year-old Vidalia man was reportedly threatened with a screwdriver, kicked and beaten early Saturday in an apparent armed robbery.

The Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested two Vidalia men in connection with the incident.

Patrick T. McGraw, 23, and Quancy J. Hawkins, 19, were charged with armed robbery Saturday.

The men reportedly stole $29 in cash from their victim near a U.S. 84 convenience store before fleeing to a silver SUV, a sheriff’s office release says.

The CPSO received a call of a fight in progress.

Deputy Stephen Karabelen spotted the suspects at the end of Louisiana 3180 running a stop sign and making a left turn toward Martin Luther King Boulevard in Vidalia.

The deputy stopped the vehicle, which was also occupied by two juveniles. The cash was reportedly found on the floorboard.

The juveniles were released to their parents’ custody.

The robbery victim was transported to Riverland Medical Center after complaining of chest pains.

so the juveniles just get away with being a part of this?????

Sad but true, police departments either release juveniles to the parent or they go to a juvenile detention center and live another day to continue on their same path, since there are bascially ZERO consequences for their actions. So many of them are being recruited by adults on how to do things because adults know for the most part, little to nothing will happen to a juvenile. Career criminals know that if the juvenile is busted, he will basically walk. Record will be cleared after 18, in most instances, so poof, there you go. Another career criminal in the making, to repeat the cycle.

Why were they released to the parent when that is where the problem started?

Teach4Peace----your are totally right in your post, and that's why parents should hold on to there children at all cost. I believe in parents being good role models, and not t.v., or sports personalities.

What about charges for contributing to the delinquency of a minor? Assault?

Posted by Kaintuck (anonymous) on August 5, 2008 at 8:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Police departments are generally effective in catching criminals; the problem occurs when criminals leave police custody and are placed in the hands of liberal judges and corrections officials. Our current judicial/correctional system no longer serves to deter criminals: Witness the number of felons that have years worth of documented criminal activity that are repeatedly loosed on society. Until "turn'em loose Bruce" judges (or governors) and revolving door corrections facilities are dealt with, we can expect this lawless trend to increase.

Poor ole Dr. King... so much violence occur on or near streets bearing his name. I don't think this was his dream.

"Poor ole Dr. King... so much violence occur on or near streets bearing his name."

It may not have been his dream but violence followed him around. And he didn't practice what he preached.

like I keep saying

get ready to take up for yourself and teach these punks a lesson they won't soon forget when you have the opportunity

the victim should have taken that screwdriver and shoved it where the sun don't shine up that punk's you know what

he could have grabbed a board, broom handle, chair, anything and equalized the situation and then proceeded to give those punks a good beating, then call the police

wait, first call the parents and beat them too, then call the police

The children should go to jail, and put their parents in jail with them. After Mommy and Daddy stay in jail for a couple of weeks they will take parenting more serious.

Releaed to their parents, they will be back soon sticking a icepick in somebodys ribs for $10.00 fo feed their habits.
Next they will be shooting people down in the streets like Jarvious Cotten did that young man years ago for a few dollars. They sit in court whenever by a slight chance they ever go to court and laugh and snicker at all concerned.they will end up with a rap sheet a mile long and keep on thuggin, thieven and killing...You can bet on it..If they did it once they will do it again.

HARDCORPS "and he didn't pratice what he preached." Please list examples of this, since YOU apparently know so much about him. The violence that followed him was brought on by "people" (ie, local and state police, "good ole boy groups",and particular segements of people) who disagreed with his message of fairness and equality and wanted things to stay as they were. Enlighten us---PLEASE!!!!!

Krogers,

I am with you on this one. we better get ready to protect ourselves very soon. The courts are not doing the job and jail has become a place for thugs to go learn better ways to commit crimes instead of getting rehabilitated.

Arm yourselves even more than you already are.

I fail to see what MLK has to do with anything in this article. I hate when people try to advance an agenda, erroneously, to cover up their hate and bigotry for a person and try to discredit the movement. I don't care who is doing what nor do I care what street they are doing it on, WRONG IS WRONG. Also, MLK faced far more attacks and violence towards his person, than he carried out. I tend to think he probably should have been violent, but that's another story. I will however agree and state, it WAS NOT MLK's dream, that blacks would turn on each other and commit crimes against each other at the rate and heinousness that is being perpetrated.

are you people retarded? Or do you think that you are better than the "criminals" that you want to kill. I have personally seen people go to jail for 20 years for killing in self defense.

In this country we are blessed to have a system where you are innocent until proven guilty. if the criminals get "off" then it is because the government or the prosecutors did not do their job. The judges have nothing to do with it. Many times the judges sentence these juveniles to the RID program to keep them from going to prison and learning to be harder criminals.

And before you start throwing stones, has anyone here read a book that another person "lent" you or watched a movie at a friend's house? Then you are a criminal. Have you ever gone 56 mph in a 55mph zone? then you are a criminal.

Inevitably "criminals" deserve to be shot until the "criminal" is you.

sounds like an appropriate name....anonymous coward.

I think that coward has put a little too much emphasis on generalizing "criminals". If what is said in your post about reading and watching movies were true then I would think we were living in a communist country.

These "kids" knew exactly what they were doing, at what point does accountability kick in? If they dont know right from wrong by now they should just rot in prison or worse because they obviously will never add to society only take, take, take until they take a life of one of their future victims

Posted by anonymouscoward (anonymous) on August 5, 2008 at 4:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

So, Warcraftfan, what is the solution? Feed and clothe them in prison? Hurt them? how about making them live apart in a "work camp" until the public realized that the cost of keeping them was too much and a "final solution" was proposed?

Sound familiar?

Don't get me wrong, I believe in people being accountable for their actions, but the punishment should fit the crime. We should not release any pent up hatred or frustrations on someone to punish them. To send a juvenile to prison now is to condemn them to a year of sodomy.

Why can't we help and teach; why do we always hurt and inflict even more pain?

Posted by Teach4Peace (anonymous) on August 5, 2008 at 5:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

IF teaching and helping them would work, then I'd be all for it. From someone who worked in the prison system, I saw all too many of them come into the system joking and laughing, they aren't afraid, then leave with even more criminal skills! I have seen some take advantage of the system in a negative way, while encarcerated, you would think they would take that time to find Christ, get an education, a trade/skill, all of which are offered in prison. A few do but far too many enter prison, still wanting to gang bang, run dope, and yes, they run dope in the pen. To REhabilitate means the person had to have SOME from of habilitation before entering prison. Sadly Anonymouscoward, some have not. The reality today is some children are in training now by family and friends, on how to commit crime. I know, it's sad. What do you do with them?

I was just watching WLBT and a store clerk was working behind a counter. A family of 4 women came into the store. 3 were adults with one 6 year old child. The store camera caught the little girl, being coached by one of the adult women, to take the clerk's purse off the counter. She did and the tape caught the little girl taking that purse to their car. Now, the clerk had gotten in a hurry to service this group of low-lifes! Kids are being coached on how to commit crime just like you can bring a child up to respect others and their property. What's going to become of that little girl when she is a teen? Adult?

Prison ONLY works for those who don't enjoy it when they go! Three hots and a cot, no bills to pay, sure, you can't leave when you want, but hey, some don't mind that even. We all do a good job at pointing out the problems, where are more viable solutions?

I bet if we bring back chain gangs and more death by injection, they will slow down the steady revolving door of prison.

I like the movie they did about the serial killer in Russian a few years back. He was called the most prolific serial killer in Russian history, something like citizen X or a name like that. After all the court days were over and all the hoopla, he was taken into a room with a floor drain and ceramic tile and he was shot in the back of the head, nice and quiet....and it was over. He did not get 25 years of appeals and see his picture on TV every other week. There were no candlelight vigils for his release...he was found guilty and put to death......

I wonder if we could speed up the death sentence appeals in this country and get these over with. I am tired of seeing these guys that are put to death after 20 years in jail. Why couldn't we get it down to a better number, like 7 years or something like that. If they can't get an appeal overturning there sentence in 7 years, get them out of the prison and move on.

Posted by SniperX (anonymous) on August 6, 2008 at 12:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)

7 Years? How about they get three appeals. If they are found guilty on the third appeal they are taken from the courthouse to that room with the drain. I figure three strikes and your out.
