Home burglary leads to arrest of four teens

Published Thursday, August 7, 2008

NATCHEZ — Three thousand dollars worth of shoes, a $4,000 TV and one pair of blue jeans were stolen in the 300 block of Old Washington Road Aug. 1

Four Natchez teenagers allegedly broke into a house, gaining access by knocking out a window unit.

It was reported to the Natchez Police Department at 7:30 a.m. when a neighbor noticed the window units had been removed and the back door was open.

“Investigators developed enough evidence to charge four individuals,” he said.

Benjamin Hargrave, 19, 110 North St., Kendrell Damon Johnson, 18, 4 Henderson St., Jerry Dwight Shinard, 18, 204 Bowman St., and Sylvester Dewayne Williams, 19, 23 S. Concord Ave., were arrested Tuesday and Wednesday.

Each has been charged with burglary of a residence and no bond has been set for any of them.

Mullins said so far, four of the 30 pairs of shoes have been recovered.

“The suspects state they sold the flat screen TV,” he said. “We’re trying to locate that and the rest of the items.”

Three Thousand dollars worth of SHOES? Man I have a hard time shucking out $80.00 dollars for a pair of Nike's.

Four Thousand for a TV? Mine works fine and we may have paid aroud $500.00 for it. We all get the same channels.

"Three thousand dollars worth of shoes" what kinda shoes are them people wearing?!

I'm not trying to be faceitous here, but what ages are encompassed by the term "teenager". When I think teenager, I think of someone from 12 or 13 to 17. I believe that if you are old enough to vote and old enough to die for your country, you are an adult.

Having said that, these young adults need to be treated like adults and punished to the fullest extent of the law. Labeling them as teenagers could give people an excuse to say, "Oh, boys will be boys. Don't be so hard on them."

I'm not saying that stealing is justifiable in any situation, but I would be less apt to be so harsh if one of these guys had done something on a whim. This seemed premeditated though. It was four of them, they seemed to know what house to go for because of the amount of stuff stolen and oddity of what was stolen, and they sold the TV for money and didn't steal it for personal use. It's highly possible they had been "casing the joint" and planned it out.

I'm sorry to keep harping on it, but it seems like everyday there is an increase in the amount of criminal activity which is being reported in the ND. Very sad.

*Getting off the soapbox*

It was thirty pair of shoes so they would have averaged $100 a piece which doesn't surprise me if they were Nike's. That wouldn't be the depreciated value of course. You know the old saying: "The car loses half it's value when you drive it off the lot." Well, in this case, it depreciates when you walk them out of the store. LOL.

Another plausible possibility: I had a friend one time who was a huge Michael Jordan fan. He had every "MJ" shoe that ever came out. They would introduce a new style every year. He wouldn't even wear them. If they were in mint condition, they would be worth more than the original price, especially the first year pair. Sort of like a rookie card is worth so much more. Anyway, it could have been a collection of sort that placed the shoes at a high value. Just a thought.

Good to see people have their priorities right. $7,000 for shoes and a TV - yet they did not upgrade their house to have central air. Much more efficient, more secure and adds value to your home. If someone took all my shoes it might run $200 - although they would have to go to 3 houses in different cities. My T.V. is 6 years old and cost $150.00 - I must be living wrong.

LOL!! I am in the same boat as you natchez1. Although my TV is better than yours. It's only 5 years old and it cost less than yours. I got mine on sale for $149.99. LOL.

Swapmeet - I have another T.V. that is 15 years old and I bought at Wal-mart on the day after thanksgiving as a special "earlybird" price of $50.00. it is just a small TV though my other T.V is 27" --- I understand that they make bigger ones now (and flatter)---- the really sad thing is my computer runs on Windows 98, (oddly the computer is a 98 too.)

I must be cheap.

Thug,s and killers and humbuggers only understand one thing. Somebody meaner than they are. That will be the one and only answer to stop it. It,s a mean cruel world getting meaner and more cruel by the second. Natchez will not be spared. Just remember this was said. Gas prices shooting higher, everything costing more and more, doubling a lot of places. It,s going to be bad quickly.

Texasranger - yes higher prices may lead to a little higher crime - but it will not suddenly turn Natchez into a crime ridden den of iniquity. Natchez has a low crime rate and the majority of its residents won't turn to crime if the price of milk and gas rise 20%.

Keep reading the papers natchez 1. You will see the same names over and over. It will get worse not just because of gas, most don,t have anyone to answer too or give them direction that do these things and it,s not going to get better. It cost $60.00 to have a septic tank pumped last year. This year it,s $130.00. I know i paid it. The freon they put in my new central AC unit last year cost $60.00 after they installed it. The electrician said the same amount of freon is now $180.00,,,where you been ????? Wait till someone does a strong arm robbery on you like they did my friend twice in the last few years because he walks to town. While they were choking him from behind they told him to give him his money or they would kill him. He doesn,t carry cash anymore...All plumbers, grasscutters, etc, rates are increasing steadly. It will make a difference just wait.

I'm with natchez1's first comment on this..

$7000 in shoes and ONE television.. yet no central air.

I'd love to have a nice flat screen LCD myself, but I'm waiting out the prices and making do with the older model I have. It'll be like DVD players and computers were. Prices will drop quickly as the novelty wears off and they become more commonplace.

I just can't believe it.. 7k on shoes and a tv. That's close to half of my student loan debt.. lol

That's a chunk of my student loan debt too, djarum, unfortunately, even though they call it "good debt". And I got my tv off the side of the road...blew it out a bit, plugged her up and been watching it for 5 years now! haha

texasranger...I think this crime is only a hint of things to come. Total anarchy is our future and if folks don't believe it, pay attention for the next five years. Our own congresspeople have sold us Americans out for their own profit. Yep, only a hint of the living hell we are facing. Half the country screams "unfair" while the other half hollers "where's mine". It's politically incorrect to make a stand on any issue in case it offends someone. And crooks are turned back out on the streets at an incredible rate. Where is our free America folks? What is happening to our world? We have to bolt ourselves in our homes to have a chance at being safe from thugs cause the ex-mayor has convinced folk there is no crime problem in Ntz.

You might spend $100.00 on a pair of COOGI pants today and tomorrow it's Dolce & Gabbana and then you want them. Before you know it you could have bought and paid for a good used car (7000).

Evidently these shoes were stolen from somewhere to begin with. Word gets out on the street what other have in their homes especially if you let people into your house.

These thugs should not get probation they should be taugh a lesson. No pending good behavior. The behavior that was displayed is exactly that PENDING. MEANING IT WILL CONTINUE.

THEY ARE BLESSED THAT NOONE WAS HOME, THEN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN "TEENAGERS SHOT TO DEATH BURGLARIZING HOME"

WOW ...30 pairs of shoes... why? you only have two feet and can only wear a pair at a time... thats insane...

$4,000 for a TV??? why? there is nothin on it to watch to start with.... I have one that I watch movies on some times but most tmes it dont get turned on....

I wonder does it really matter whos name is sewed in the garment? after all it is not like you wear it inside out to show the lable and definietly dont go around showing it to them... so what is the purpose of paying those outrageous prices for something that no one care about to start with and secondly is over priced? it makes no sense!

It amazes me what people will waste money on... As for the burglars... when people start blasting their butts out the wall then maybe the message will become clear to all that people will defend their homes and not just sit and wait for the police to arrive...

Question ? What if the owner was there at the time of this invasion
and decided to shoot and kill these thugs inside their home . You can't take any chances with these criminal slime balls . I would hope that the law would be on the property owner's side . When is a property owner allowed to used deadly force ? Someone familiar with the law regarding home invasion please comment .

People value systems are different/so it's wrong to critique another person order of priority.
What's important is how do we tame people who ignores other people right to own these things.
It's not right to break in private residence and steal.

I remember summers long ago before the Marines, before Vietnam, before marriage and two great sons, before long dreamed of adulthood when I ran barefooted all summer and didn't have a TV.
I would walk through the neighborhoods, bad ones too, and sell Christmas cards, seeds, knick knacks, and even sold cosmetics. I would dress up and put shoes on when I was selling Blair cosmetics to the pretty ladies. I must have been ten years old and had no worries. Now I have just about everything a man could want and people want to break into my house to get it. Makes me think kpage was on target. So Sad. :-(

Hey Hard...even when I was coming up in the 70s things were great in my neighborhood...the place where no one locked the doors and kids actually could play in the woods without getting run out. My kids today are playing in a neighborhood much like my old one and are told to "break it up" when the crowd gets too big during a basketball game. I'll quote a dear friend of mine..."Ya can't have nothing niiiice no more".

You would think so but that's not the case. I have seen kids lately wearing their shirts inside out. I know they do it on purpose because I've seen it too many times. I just don't get the reason why. Just curious.

And yes guys, I used to live in Gloster as a 5 year old in the early 80's. I would tell mom I was going around the block or going riding bikes with my buddy. I could be gone all morning and she wouldn't worry. Everyone knew each other and watched out for each other. Those days are so over.

I hear a lot of you guys talking about your fear of what's happenning around town, don't be afraid, just get prepared.

Try to start working out and practicing your self-defense skills, marksmanship, get handy with your weapons of choice, lay out a plan to deal with home intrusion invaders and carjackers, practice confrontation scenarios, get some good dogs, motion detector lights at strategic points around the house, set the motion detectors so that they don't come on when you come out the door and blind you, set them so they shine out away from the house so you can see. Go out in groups and think of personal security more. Find some good training partners to spar and wrestle with. Learn some good martial arts techniques and shape up. There's only one way to keep our town safe, MAKE IT SO, help the police and take action like a responsible citizen should.

We cannot cower down in our homes in fear, we have to exert ourselves over these punks and defeat them. The battle of good and evil is nothing new, it's just that so many of us have grown complacent and expect a few policemen to take care of us. It's just not possible, we have to participate in our own defense. I stand down punks everyday and call their bluff, if you face them, they will shrink. I'm just a little guy, (5ft 8, 180lb) if I can do it, you can too.

Justice--

Mississippi has excellent self-defense laws

Especially in your home or business, and your vehicle.

You have the right to have a firearm on you in all the above cases. You vehicle is an extension of your home in MS.

In your home you do not have to give ground and retreat to allow the perp the first shot or attack. If you "feel" that your life or property is at risk you have the right to take action as you see fit to protect your life without retribution from the perp or his family or heirs. Same is true at your business and on your "castle walk" to and from home and business.

To be on the safe side it is best to meet force with equal force, and once the perp goes down it is not a good idea to continue with unnecessary brutality. You could be charged for unnecessarily shooting, beating, etc once the threat is obviously neutralized. So make the first shot count, of course never shoot without knowing what your target is. We don't need any more accidents.

But the law is definitely on the side of the homeowner and businessowner in the case of attack by an intruder. You can take them out without question if they are a threat to your life, which you must determine for yourself based on the situation. If it's a big guy with ANY weapon, you are free and clear to take them out in your home or as they are in the act of entering.

Used to be you would have to give ground and retreat and then if the perp continued to threaten and attack you could retaliate legally, but now that has changed.

Out on the street it is he said she said unless you have a witness. So once again when you are out of your home territory, meet force with force only, and try to DEESCALATE any situation with control, so you will be in the clear, but once you have received some injury, or there is obvious threat to life (brandishing a weapon)then the way is clear for you to do whatever it takes to equalize the situation and render your safety.

This is on advice from my lawyer , but please seek your own lawyer's advice

Nobody wants unnecessary trouble, but neither do you want to give the bad guys the upper hand and get hurt.

Justice-

to more clearly answer your specific question about the above situation - if the homeowner had been there?

If upon confrontation the gang of thieves approached him, victim being greatly outnumbered, and they scared him to the point he thought his life was threatened, he could gun them down or slice them up with sword or use whatever weapon of choice, just don't shoot them in the back while they are running out the door. That would tend to make it look like there was no life threatening situation if they were shot in the back. I imagine these punks would have run if the homeowner had confronted them and they had access to an exit without the homeowner being in the way, in which case I'm sure the homeowner's safety would then be in jeopardy. But then again, they may have pulled knives, guns, or baseball bat, etc and if the homeowner had been a woman, they may have had some other thoughts..................... in which case death by shooting or otherwise would be an appropriate response by the homeowner in my mind.

And for all you wanna be criminals. Your day is coming. We are fed up. If you enter my home, and my children are there, I will immediately assume that you are armed, and take the appropriate actions. They will be swift, and final, with -0- questions asked by me. I will deal with whatever the consequences are.

I wish I had the answer to this issue. It is only going to get worse as long as we are forced to respect the rights of those who mean us harm. That's why criminals have the upper hand and will continue to gain more as long as the idiot lawmakers have anything to do with it.

Here in Maricopa County we have tent city and the welcome sign is always on. Residents enjoy green balogna, pink underwear and nice, hot days and nights . The point is, we have plenty of criminals, but Sheriff Joe wants to make an impression on the criminal element of society, that getting a job and abiding by the law is more pleasant than time spent at tent city. For some reason, he has very few return "residents." It makes me sad to know that the little town I grew up in has changed so much, but it is great to know the NPD were able to apprehend these criminals.

I think the purchaser of the TV and the shoes not found yet, need just as much punishment as the tweens. It is disgusting and I have to agree with natchez1 on this one. If you have $7000 to put toward items that add NO value, then you can certainly have some central heating and cooling placed in your home. It's not about what people have the right to spend their money on, but it is about PRIORITY. Like these people who drive Escalades yet live in apartment complexes. Anyone has the right to have what they want, but where is the prioritizing?

This young lady had just purchased the home as a first time homebuyer and was moving in with her children (I think 4). (She had only been in the house for a day!) Now, I have three children, a husband, and myself in my house and we all have multiple pairs of shoes. I can easily see how there were 30 pairs of shoes in the house; some women have that many pairs all by themselves. This young lady works hard and treated her and her family to a nice housewarming gift; I don't see a problem with that. Furthermore, she was in the process of pricing central air, but the theives didn't give her a chance to put it in, did they?

cevers there is no law that says she has to.....If she wanted to buy a tv it is her money....She can spend it on what she likes.....She may have been ok with window units...It is HER house to do with what she wants....She shouldn't have to spend the extra money on central air if she doesn't want to just to try and keep thieves out...But, They are just that thieves they will find a way in....Thank God she or her children weren't hurt...

Her priorities are obvisouly different from some of ours. And that's what makes the world go 'round. If they want to spend their money - provided it was earned - on shoes and tv's so be it. Mine goes for horse stuff, dog stuff, kid stuff, plants, but those are the things I enjoy. And nobody better ever try to take anything that is mine. I'll give food, money, clothes to anyone in need, just ask. But don't try to steal it.

Actually in Texas a lot of people are cutting the central a/c off and buying window units to save $$ on electricity bills.
As far as $3000.00 in shoes, I have 53 pairs of shoes, and enjoy wearing them. I have 3 pair of Manolo Blahnik that range from $725.00, $895.00, to $1495.00; and a pair of Gucci sandals that are $1295.00; so $3000.00 is not a lot of money for shoes. I am not bragging, I just wanted to set the record straight that $3000.00 is not a lot of $$ for shoes.
Besides, it doesn't matter what the cost of anything was; they were not theirs to take; stealing them was wrong.

They could have just as easily broken out windows to get into the house. A central air conditioner won't stop thieves, and locks only keep honest people out. Once they decided to break and enter, they would have found a way. A good burgular alarm might help to deter thieves once it starts alarming.

The police were on their toes to catch the perps so quickly...good job guys.

When there are people going hungry, without any clothing or shoes, homeless with no shelters, - then $3000 is a lot for shoes. Just my own opinion.

Why is there so much talk about the shoes and the TV. This is America we can have what ever we want if we have the ability to buy it and we shouldn't have worry about it when we're out working or buying more stuff. Regardless of whether you feel this person priorities are in line or not doesn't dismiss the fact they were robbed. I'm sure there are many hunters and fishermen that have as much tied up in a few rifles and tackle and we haven't bought the 4-wheeler or boat yet.

Freedom you're kidding right.

Sometimes its really sad to see the number of bored housewives, and and people who just want to see their clever username in print in this town. I mean really people...come on! There are 4 guys that broke into someones home, and all you people can talk about is what the owner spends her money on?

Its called democracy. If she earned it, she doesnt need you snobs with "$150 10 year old tvs" questioning her actions.

If I want to spend my entire paycheck decorating the interior of my home in pink neon and tin foil, who are you idiots to question me. Granted, it would be tacky...but it would be MY tacky home...maybe I'll spend my next paycheck on $5000 worth of shoes, that dont even fit...did I not earn the right to do that?

And the amount of talk about a window unit. Jeez. Do you people know how many window units are in Natchez? Probably 10's of thousands, and thats what you focus on? If these thugs wanted in, she could have had 5 central air units, and no window units....they would have found a way. Do you really think they were out roaming the streets looking for window units? How bout all the recent break-ins...were rogue window units involved...nope.

Some of you people couldnt get the main point of a story if it sat on your face....THIEVES WOULD BE THE FOCUS OF THIS ARTICLE. Ughh.

No I'm not kidding. I could not possibly spend that much on personal items when there is so much wrong in the world. However, remember I did agree that it is everyones right to spend their money on whatever they want. I just personally can't do it. We are not poor by any means, although I have never had the money to spend $700 on one pair of shoes, and I would not want to in any case. I would rather put a smile on the face of a child, or find a home for an innocent animal than spend that much on myself.
I hope that the thieves are punished to the full extent of the law and that the victims get their stolen items back. That is important to them. It is wrong to steal, and no one had better steal anything from me. That is what the whole article is about anyway.

Amazing that more people were concerned about the fact someone owned so many shoes and an expensive TV rather than the fact that some creeps stole these items!!

fire39212...I agree with you. I was just trying to let everyone know that this young lady was just moving into her first home and was in the process of checking on getting it equipped with central A/C. My husband and I owned the house for 10 years and never had a break-in (By the by...the house cooled just fine with the window units, and it was cheaper.) The day after she moved in...bam! I am just thankful that she and the children are safe. Good job - NPD!

What the heck does central air have to do with anything? Someones home was broken into by 4 useless criminals. Even if her doors and windows were wide open. THEY were in the wrong. Everyone of their personal possessions should be given to this lady to sell. And the 4 of them hopefully will put in prison forever..................... Because her life has now been changed forever................
Tougher laws.
