Concordia Parish Fire District No. 2 firefighter Bill Mitchum works to extinguish a trailer home fire in Vidalia Sturday afternoon. Firefighters from Concordia Parish assisted firefighters from Vidalia fire department in battling the blaze.
Fire leaves family homeless
Published Sunday, August 10, 2008
Vidalia — On Saturday afternoon the Vidalia Fire Department was dispatched to a trailer fire on Danny Drive that left one family homeless.
Dudley LeBlanc Jr. said he was at home with his fiancé Sherry McCage and their young daughter when he heard a strange noise.
“It sounded like a pop or a loud snap,” he said. “And (McCage) said ‘I smell something burning baby,’”

After battling a trailer home fire in Vidalia Saturday afternoon, the water hoses were used to cool off firefighters, including Captain Kenny France, in front.
LeBlanc said the noise sounded “electrical.”
By the time LeBlanc walked to the bedroom, where he believed the noise had originated, it was engulfed in flames.
“The whole room was going,” he said. “The smoke almost knocked me out.”
LeBlanc and his family immediately left the trailer.
“We didn’t take anything,” he said, shirtless in front of a neighbor’s trailer.
The only clothes spared were those hung on a line to dry in front of the trailer before the fire started.
The scene drew several neighbors from their trailers and even prompted one to help fight the fire.
One man wearing a John Deere bandana tied around his nose and mouth doused the backside of the trailer with a garden hose while the VPD sprayed the front of the burning structure.

Firemen eventually forced the man to give up his efforts.
LeBlanc said he and his family will stay with his father until he finds a new home.

It's like this, everyone gets involved, you don't even have to ask for money.Someone out there may have a used trailer that they will let this family have. Then you get volunters to help with the cleaning and painting if need be.The Democrat will help put this in the paper, ask for items that you will need. You will only need one table and chairs. If you have two bedrooms then only take enough items for those two bedrooms only. One refrigerator, stove, couch and chairs, lamps whatever they need only.People look around you're home and see what you have and go from there.I know that this will work.We had two families in the last three years that lost everything due to a fire. We helped these families get there lives back. We set out on a mission and that was to get them a home.We took only items that these families needed. And people remember that anyone can be down.I know the first thing people will do and that is get them some clothing, but they need more than that.So i challenge each and everyone if you know someone that has a used mobile home that would like to help this family out call them. And if it has to be moved, someone please step up to the plate and let's help them move it.My prayer is that they have somewhere to put a trailer on.They also may need help in cleaning up where there home burned.Go thru you're kitchen cabinets and share you're food with them also keep in mind that if their staying with someone, you may want to take food to wherever there at,i think the paper said his father.People this can work if we all pull together. Then once there set up we can throw them one big house warming. You don't have to ask for one cent, just some sense this can work.I call on all our Miss Lou Churches, communities, family and friends lets help make a difference.

"One man wearing a John Deere bandana tied around his nose and mouth doused the backside of the trailer with a garden hose while the VPD sprayed the front of the burning structure."
Yes, this was my SON and I was so proud of him, he did not even think of his saftey, I was worried that something might blow and he could have gotten hurt...but being the kind of young man that he is, all he thought about was the safety of the family and their belongings. People listen up, They lost EVERYTHING, this family has 5 children, 4 small boys and 1 baby girl. This family is in need of clothing, food, or just about anything to put their lives back together. If anyone has things to donate please feel free to contact me and I will give you a place where it can be dropped off to the family...
I just want to Thank Our Heavenly God above, no one was hurt or killed in this fire..

Amen Bobcat ! Excellent posting !
Will a list of items this family needs be published somewhere?
Maybe the Democrat would follow up in a few days and keep us
informed of progress toward helping the family.
Would be nice for our community to come together to help them rebuild their lives after this tragedy.
Kudos to the VPD and the civilian gentleman who helped fight the fire !
:)

This was a truly devastating event for the family especially the children. Once again the VFD and Concodia Fire District 2 have shown they have the right stuff. The young man with the bandana is to be commended and should join a local volunteer department and get the training needed to do this type job. Our local Volunteer departments are always looking for people who have the drive and stamina to do this job. Who will take the place of the men and women who are donating their time everyday when they get to the age where it's time to hang up the turnout gear? With the temps as high as they have been lately more people are needed to battle these structure fires. The more people the easier the job. Heat exhaustion is a deadly force to have to deal with.
Again the firemen onscene did an excellent job of containing and extinguishing this fire. Great job Guys!!

>>na1015<< you deserve a round of applause for your work of getting the list of needed items. I have experienced many times how our community pulls together when others have need such as this. The outpouring of love and compassion is very great in our little corner of the world and it is so awe inspiring. I am so glad to be able to live among such awesome people that are so quick to come to the aid of others.

I totally agree that the young man who was attempting to help the fire department should join a local volunteer department and get trained in how to extinguish fires. And wifetoone, Bulldozer was probably just someone who could not make the cut as a firefighter and is just trying to make hisself feel better by sitting on his butt behind this computer screen and pointing his finger at what he believes that the fire department is doing wrong. At least the guys on these fire departments are out there training and doing something to help the community besides sit on their lazy butts at home and point out everyone else's faults.

I just sent an email to na1015... my daughters had a garage sale this weekend with baby clothes in it. Most of the size 2 clothing we had did NOT sell. God thing(!) cause he knows he really needed them. I have clothes, shoes, and toys for the baby. I wish I could for the boys and parents but can't. But what we have is theirs! And what I have is plenty for the baby. Just waiting to hear!

XXBeautifulDisasterXX it's ok! Lets stick to what's at hand and that's trying to help this Family out. There's so many way's that we all can help.First you have to go to the sorce and make sure there's a need.Which in this story there is.Then you ask what you can do to help? Then you get the Democrat come and do a follow up story on what's going on with this family and update it.Did they have insurance, but keep in mind that insurance does'nt cover everything or renters insurance as well. And if there is know insurance then people get going and get involved that is make sure you and i have permission.Remember that this family has lost everthing material wise that they have.Keep in mind even the simplest things like a salt and pepper shaker.I don't know this family, but i know that there so thankful that there lives were spared,so many times people lose their lives over a home that has burned to the ground. But now the after affect will set in.I thank God for this family that they do have a place to go and stay until they can all figure out what to do at this point.Alot of people don't have that.We had a faimily that was burned out when Katrina Hit no insurance at all,i have pictures that i took where they were living in a tent. The Democrat came and did the story after that people opened up their hearts and their doors and gave.We only would take what was needed to fill a home up.We had one person who wrote a check for $50.00(thanks Liz)and we went and bought personal items that were needed. So many people reached out and gave. This was the only" monetary"that we took everything else was given to this family. After they got a used trailer everyone that could helped with their time.Just enough that was needed to get them out of the tent they were living in.Then Springfield Baptist Church gave them a house warming to finish out what they were in need of. I made a list and when someone asked what they didn't have i would show them,to give them an idea of what they did need. Some people gave out of their home and some would go buy , items that was needed. The Miss Lou came together and helped. We as a whole did all this without just handing money out, other than the $50.00 check. On another note 2 years ago their was a family who was also burned out, samething happened to them, they got out with just the clothes on their back. Adairs That sells new Mobile Homes had a used 12 by 60 someone had traded in,they gave this to the family(again thanks Adairs for contributing this home)it took 6 weeks but with everyone helping they were in there new home 2 weeks before Christmas. All this because of people working together.God says were to help each other and im a firm beleiver it can happen when everyone stands together.

besides clothes, just go into a room in you're home, look around, and picture what you have, make a note, this family lost everything, this should help you on what you need to give.Don't forget food items.Once they get a fire report take this to the Salvation Army, they moved back uptown, they may have somethings as well that can help besides clothing.American Red Cross, will give you a little help. You can take that and go to Walmart and get some items. To the Family make sure you have copies of the fire report with you, people will be more willing to help out if they have proof theirs a need. Some people does'nt get a paper .

I'm sure the boys go to Concordia schools and could use school uniforms, if anyone has extras. I can't remember what colors they wear in Vidalia.
Even if we all just pitched in a dollar or two that would add up and help.
