Natchez Police officers and an unindentified man wave in a tow truck to take away an automoblie after a man was shot and killed on the North Circle Drive approximately 2 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Man murdered in Roselawn
Published Wednesday, August 13, 2008
NATCHEZ — Police responding to a fight in the Roselawn area Tuesday morning arrived to find a murder victim.
The Natchez Police Department was dispatched at 12:59 a.m. to the intersection of Roselawn Drive and North Circle Drive, where a car had run into, and partially up, a light pole.
Charvius Martin, 24, 3 Dale Court, had been shot and killed while driving the white Chrysler 300 belonging to Erik Hutchins, 20, 2910 Miller Ave.
“The victim was in the driver’s seat and was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance personnel,” Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said.
Hutchins was also in the car at the time of the murder. He had left the scene of the crime, but returned while officers were there.
Jordan R. Bates, 18, 2707 Roselawn Drive, who was also allegedly in the car, was arrested at his residence at 2:12 a.m. Tuesday, on charges of murder.
“We recovered two weapons (from Bates) and we believe one of those weapons was the one that was used, from the preliminary investigation,” Mullins said.
Police said all three men knew each other, but the extent of their relationship is still under investigation.
“The motive for the shooting is under investigation, as well as the exact circumstances,” Mullins said.
Based on the damage to the car, Martin was shot while the car was either stopped, or moving very slowly, Mullins said.
Martin was shot in the head twice, Adams County Coroner James Lee said. One of the bullets also struck him in the arm after it exited his head.
“There was certain evidence that he may have been shot from behind,” Lee said.
Lee also said that the killing did not appear to be an accident.
“One fact remains, whoever the shooter was, he intended to take a life,” Lee said.
“It’s a tragedy for Adams County, it’s a tragedy for the family.”
Martin worked offshore.

My prayers go out to families of those involved, especially those of the man who was senselessly killed.
I know it won't be long before people come on here like yesterday and start villianizing the victim. Before you do that, consider the family. We can debate all day long about whether or not people should be out at night or where they should be, but ultimately, it will not bring this young man back.
Once again family, I'm extremely sorry for your loss. I can't begin to understand what you are going through.

Once upon a time long long ago Roselawn was a nice little community with working families and children riding their bicycles around the circles and Melrose and Linden. Where have all the good times gone.

I agree, Roselawn use to be a very clean peaceful neighborhood. I think drugs & gangs have taken over Roselawn & many other nice neighbors.
The Natchez we once knew & loved no longer exist.

Chuck was a very nice young man. Someone mentioned in a comment to be mindful of his family when making comments-so true. They are going through a tough process right now. We have to also pray for and remember his 3 month old son who will never know him. I am going to miss you Chuck. My prayers are with you and your family.

How in God's Green Earth can you "Crazed Cyco Kid's" take the life of a living human being with a beating heart? It sounds like a "get into a gange" type of killing to me. But God Forbid...he was an innocent hard worker from the sound of the artical. I can only immagine the traumma the parents of the killed victim's Family must be going through.
Family, you have all my prayers to God for blessings and recovery...May God Rest His Soul.
I fear the vilence in kids today but with God at our right hands...whom can be against us Amen. Pray Adams Co... Pray that it isn't your only Son next time. My son barley excaped the killing that was ment for him years ago from messing with Pot in High School. Dear God I pray...Please Mom's & Dad's...get your High Risk Kids into Church and more pleasent things in life...me, I took him and moved to Florida to save him. That was in 2000, his Senior Year at Natchez High. He's still there but I am back. He's found a new life and his sister's are with him...Praise God. I really feel that the kids of today are numbed to the violence because of the Video Games they play on a daily basis. I have only gotten glances of the games because I forbid them in my home & also, no MTV, Super Natural Movies, etc. Our children need to be supervised 100% untill an accountable age of 21. I know it's hard with Single Mom's and working parents but someone can keep an eye...at least let them think they are under an eye from a neighbor or something. My heart is sad for all the family's pain and grief. It didn't have to happen. Also...maybe the bullet was ment for the owner of the car...Please be careful and investagate that theory Mom of the other child. With all my love and prayers too Our Children, Our Town and all that are hurting, "In Jesus's Name" Amen

I really am truly shocked and saddened by this news. Chucky was a very sweet and loving young man. I do not care what everyone else says, I base my comments on how he treated me and my children. I loved this young man as if he were one of my own. He grew up with my nephews making him a part of my family. My heart goes out to his mother and sisters. I am going to miss you Chucky...Rest in Peace my baby.

The bullet was NOT INTENDED for the owner of the car. He, too, is a young man working hard off shore since graduating from High School-AND COMES FROM A GOOD FAMILY. He left the scene, momentarily, PANIC STRICKEN over what he had just witnessed and RUNNING for his life to a nearby relative's home. How do I know!? He's my son!
While it is true, the violence needs to stop; so does the flow of assumptions.
My heart goes out to the family of Charvius, the murdered young man; to the family of Jordan who has to endure what he did; but even moreso to my stepson~because he SAW THIS and has to find a way to stop the nightmares and come to grips with seeing another human being, whom he knew, die senselessly!

I drove around North/South Circle a few weeks ago to take a look at a house for sale over there. I though I might get it, fix it up and have family live there. NO WAY is that goinna happen now.
***
As I drove past the north east side of North Circle I saw a couple of fellows standing in the shade of a tree there. One of them was wearing the standard red/black/white of the "Bloods" California gang with the red cap cocked at that prescribed angle. Sheriff Ronny has denied that there is any gang activity around Adams County when speaking to the public but the truth is there ARE gangs in and around Natchez and he knows it.

I don't understand why young people are riding around with guns in Natchez. Is this a warzone? When something like this happens, I can almost agree to banning weapons, because some who own them have no idea how to handle the responsibility of ownership. Was the gun involved in the shooting a registered weapon or illegally owned? Why on earth were these young people riding around with weapons in their hands?
I hope this was an accident, but still a young life has been ended too soon. My condolences to the family of the victim.

Such a sad thing. We have all known loss and some of us know parents who have lost a child. To lose a child in this way has got to be one of the most horrible events that could happen to a family. Let's not forget the families of the other two. Even the shooter's parents have lost a child! My heart goes out to all of them.

My prayers go out to the Martin family.. Yes, there is a lot of gang activity in Natchez, and it's sad that they don't want to grow up and do something better with their lives like graduate from school and make money the right way! And for the shooter, Hopefully justice WILL BE SERVED towards him! He is 18 and will be charged as an adult! RIP Charvius "50"Martin..

Who was the bullet intended for? Are you saying the bullet was intened for your son? Ok, so your son was the owner of the car, who was the passenger that ran off, but then came back after the cops arrived. You said your son ran because he was afraid for his life, but you didn't say why there were weapons in the car.

My heart goes out to the family. I have known this family for years and I don't think anyone deserves to be murdered regardless of their "lifestyle". Chuck "FIFTY" was a good guy and his family does not deserve to go through this. As for the suspects family they do not deserve to have to go through this either. However, I have no sympathy for the suspect.

Every one on here needs to be thankful for what they got and leave the detective thing to the police. It does not matter who had weapons and who did not. A life was lost, a good friend will see his friend die in his dreams for the rest of his life, and a 18 year old will be in prison for the rest of his. There are so many people hurting from this. Natchez or any other city has the same problems. No matter where you live you will hear or see the same thing go on. I know because I am from Jena, La. Look what happened there a year ago and that was finally brought to the public eye when it has been like that for at least 28yrs or better.

I'm sorry for the lost of all involved. I am also sorry for your lost also, Butterfly. Don't let the comments on here worry you or make you feel even worst. I don't know what your stepson and his friends were doing, and I'm not going to try to figure out. What's done is done. I know some of these comments are unfair, inconsiderate, and hurtful, but this happens all the time by the same group of people. You are not the only one. So, try to look over it, and I know it won't be easy. You and all families involved have a long mourning ahead, so all I can say is the hope that God stay with you, look to him when everyone else turns away. Just because someone lived a certain way, they don't deserve to die. God has helped the worst of us.

MAY GOD BE WITH YOU ALL & GIVE YOU PEACE.
THIS IS VERY SAD TO EACH PARTY INVOLVED. NATCHEZ IF YOU THINK THE VIOLENCE IS BAD NOW & IT IS, JUST WAIT UNTIL ANOTHER BOAT GET'S HERE!!, WE WILL BE LIKE JACKSON, MS. THEY HAVE THIS ON A DAILY BASIS THERE!
THIS IS ALL BECAUSE OF DURG'S, ALCOHOL, GANG'S, ECT..
THERE IS ( NOTHING HERE FOR OUR YOUTH TO DO!! ) I WROTE ARTICLES OVER 15 YRS. AGO ABOUT THIS & NOTHING HAS CHANGED! WHY CAN'T OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS GET DECENT PLACES FOR OUR CHILDREN & GRAND CHILDREN TO GO TO & HAVE FUN & BE SAFE IN NATCHEZ? OUR CHILDREN OF THIS GENERATION SEE VIOLENCE 24/7 & NO THAT DOES NOT EXCUSE WHAT HAS HAPPENED, BUT OUR KID'S HAVE NO HERO TO LOOK UP TO! MOST FAMILIE'S WON'T EVEN TAKE THE TIME TO ( TAKE THIER CHILDREN TO A GOOD CHURCH! ) OR TELL THEM ANYTHING ABOUT GOD & HIS COMMANDMENTS, BECAUSE THEY ARE STILL IN A DARK CLOSET IN GEORGIA! AS LONG AS WE KEEP GOD IN THE DARK AS A NATION, WE & OUR CHILDREN WILL SUFFER FOR IT AS NATION! OUT GROWN KID'S WITH OUR GRAND CHILDREN DON'T THINK GOD IS IMPORTANT ANY MORE & THIS IS BEYOND SAD! I HAVE TOLD MY SON TO (PLEASE TAKE MY GRAND CHILD TO CHURCH & TO TELL HER ABOUT JESUS, BUT THEY WON'T ),SO I DO EVERY TIME I HAVE HER I TELL HER ABOUT GOD & HOW MUCH HE LOVES HER! I HAVE HER A LITTLE BIBLE HERE & WE LOOK AT IT TOGETHER & I TRY MY BEST TO TELL HER ABOUT GOD & I ALSO HAVE A BEAUTIFUL BIG PICTURE OF JESUS IN MY DINING ROOM & SHE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHO IT WAS UNTIL I TOLD HER, & GOD THAT BREAK'S MY HEART! HER PARENT'S ARE IN THERE MID 30 BUT REFUSE TO TAKE HER TO CHURCH! I AM ON DISABILITY INCOME & I WOULD TAKE HER EVERY SUNDAY BUT THEY LIVE OVER 30 MILES ROUND TRIP & I CAN'T AFFORD THE GAS PRICES, I DO GOOD TO PAY MY BILL'S EACH MONTH! I HAVE DECIDED A BILL WILL JUST HAVE TO WAIT, BECAUSE AS OF THIS SUNDAY IM GOING TO TAKE MY GRAND DAUGHTER TO MY CHURCH WITH ME! I TOOK MY SON TO CHURCH EVERY SUNDAY SINCE HE WAS BORN & WE ALL WAY'S SAID OUR PRAYER'S TOGRTHER AT BED TIME, WITH OUR KNEE'S ON THE FLOOR BESIDE HIS BED, ( WE AS PARENT'S HAVE TO TEACH OUR CHILDREN ABOUT GOD! ) IT IS OUR RESPONCIBILITY, NOT THE GOVERNMENT, BECAUSE THEY ( DON'T CARE! ) I TAUGHT MY SON ALL I KNEW ABOUT GOD AS HE GREW UP & TAUGHT HIM ABOUT ( LOVE, KINDNESS, SHARING, & HELPING OTHER'S THAT ARE IN NEED & THE LOVE OF GOD.)
IT SEEM'S THAT ALL ANYONE CARE'S ABOUT THESE DAY'S IS GOING OUT & GETTING DRUNK OR POPING PILL'S, ANYTHING TO GET A BUZZ! I PRAY TO GOD THAT THEY WILL WAKE-UP & DO THE RIGHT THING FOR THEIR CHILD BUT THEY WON'T, SO I WILL STEP UP TO THE PLATE & DO WHAT I KNOW IS RIGHT! ( PLEASE GET YOUR CHILDREN IN A GOOD CHURCH ASAP! )
MAY GOD BLESS US ALL! AMEN.
PS. I ALSO PRAY THAT THIS SENCELESS WAR WILL END ASAP! WE HAVE WAY TO MANY OF OUR YOUTH GETTING KILLED ( OVER STUPID OIL & POLITICAL POSITION'S! ) OUR ELECTED PRESIDENT IS AN IDIOT!
I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT BEING POLITICALLY CORRECT!, THE TRUTH IS THE TRUTH!, PERIOD!
GOD BLESS & HAVE A NICE DAY!

Did you mean that they live 30 miles each way or 30 miles all together? If it's all together, you should be able to make the trip for about $4.50 or so. Is there anyone you know that could spare you the $20 a month it would take so you could do this?

this is always ashame when it's such a young person losing their life. people are heartless at times on here, but it is their right to write what they want.to the family who lost a loved one i'm sorry for your lose to the guy who ran your nightmares want get better unless you talk to someone you trust it will help and also keep a note book around and write down what you dream about no matter what it is and find a dream book and look up what everything means, i know someone who done this and it helped them deal with what they had been through. now with that said, ronnie brown he's a big fat lazyas.... he doesn't know his head from his as... neither does his so called investigation unit. if you want to get away with murder come to natchez,ms,cause if you don't leave a finger print ,the murder weapon,or your own blood behind, you'll never be caught by the law here. they don't know how to do their jobs, cause guess why, they have never been taught, never taken classes,or trained in this. just hired on to do other jobs, and by going to afew crimes oh, that makes them investigators, oh please , i wouldn't be this way if the law would do their jobs the right way from start to finish and when the law deputies think they are above the law that's what tee's me off. no one is above the law,but only GOD. my prayers are with the familys my GOD BLESS you in this time of need.

My prayers goes out to the Martin family. Chuck was a very nice and easy going person and he will be MISS VERY MUCH by all. And the people that said or think that it was about drugs it just shows how you people think of young black men and its just sad. He had a job trying to make it. Please let the memory of him stay that way.

50 was cool as a fan with me, but some of you are trying to make it like he was this upstanding citizen, when that just was not the case. I knew him and his family well, 50 did have the opportunity to do right, because he had a good job, a girlfriend who loved him and they just had a beautiful son. But he still chose to include himself in a lot of bull, that the streets had to offer. The street life offers death fast or slow. some people say when its your time its just your time, wrong, we can rush our time with fast living. rest in peace chuck, I love you boy.

What difference does it make what time of the day it was and what they were doing. People are so narrow minded that they think if you out late at night you are up to no good. They think because you are young and black you are up to no good, but there is no excuse for what happened to CHUCK. CHUCK was a good person and was murdered without good cause so think about that when you are assuming something. Everybody does not live their life by other peoples standards and CHUCK was one of those people.

Until then there will be no compassion or sympathy from this hootch.

Hey Swap, I did see that last message...I still don't agree tho. Ok, so let's assume that these lost souls are in denial; even though, the bible (Romans 1:20) says that since the beginning the attributes of God are clearly visible and people are without excuse when they deny the existence of God, and even Satan believes in God (he has to in order to exist). Unless one consciously makes the decision that there is a God, there would be no point in them seeking His Kingdom and repenting of sins they haven't yet realized. Therefore, the most important decision would be to decide whether or not to believe in God and learn from there.

One more thing you people need to get a life and stop all the FOOLISHNESS and put this situation as if it was someone in your family. There's not a family around here that is perfect, everyone has a bad one in the family somewhere, so stop the NEGATIVE talk and put these families IN YOUR PRAYERS (if you pray) & RESPECT THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

50 will be truely missed by all of us. there is nothin u can say bad about Chuck, he was always there to help anybody. he took good care of his baby, who my heart goes out to because he has to grow up not knowing his father. the only thing he have to remember Chuck by is pictures and stories from his family. Even though Chuck wasnt no saint, he was a Christian and he always did the right thing. My prayers go out to Tootsie and her family. No one can imagine how she is feeling right now. My prayers also goes out to Keyla, his girlfriend. She also has to raise a baby without his father. Chuck didnt deserve none of this and i believe everybody feels me on that. We Luv U Chuck N U Will Be Truely Missed! C U When I Get Dere!

Natchez, Natchez,Natchez.
I lived in Natchez for 15 yrs believe it or not in Roselawn for all 15 yrs, Guess why I moved? Well lets just put it this way, Roselawn was a nice little community I raised my kids there most of their lives, I helped out neighbors, I even got involved in the neighborhood watch untill the rest of the people involved got tired of going out and making rounds at night, and the police dept lost interest in our neighborhood watch. People started wanting out of our neighborhood because property values were going down. Then hud house signs started popping up all around the neighborhood.
Then guess what happened? The hoodlems started showing up stealing from outside our houses and then breaking in our houses, It got so bad for us at one point that my wife and I started carrying guns wherever we went, the older folks in the neighborhood started getting scared of our neighborhood and they started moving away.
As for this murderer ( Jordan Bates ) I had some dealings with him and his brother when they took my son's bike, and when they trashed my mail box, after I had gotten the police involved in the bike theft.
This just goes to show that when they start out being criminals at a young age it just esculates as they get older.
Natchez needs to wake up and focus on the future of their children.
Natchez is extremely hung up on the past and needs to look to the future to set positive goals for their kids. Because their kids are their future.
In closing I would like to express my condolences to the Martin family in their time of sorrow.

I too lived in Roselawn and guess what.....I STILL DO. Roselawn is not as horrible as some try to make it seem and EXCUSE me did you(timefertruth) say 'then the hud houses started showing up and the hoodlems started showing up stealing' what are you trying to imply only hoodlems live in hud houses? I think not! As for the three that where involved, I know each one of them personally and they are all good men.
I knew Chuck and he was a good person my church member and just like family to me, he was raised by a church going family and, every child he knew loved him. I know Jamar and he is my friend, neighbor and he also was raised by a good church going family. Jordan is also my friend and I know him very very well and the Jordan I know wouldn't have done this. He also has a loving mother who is hurting and crying every night because another mother is never going to get her son back and also she has to live with her son possiblly in prison for the rest of his life....How do I know?.....because she told me.
Sons and Daughters make there own decisons whether they be right or wrong, don't be so quick to blame parents because you don't know how a person raises or raised their child, just raise your children the right way. And one more thing when this world is over and done your opinion won't matter anyway only GOD's will.
My heart goes out to all three families:
Chavarius "Chuck" Martin's
Eric Jamar Hutchins'
and Jordan Bates'
you three are always in my prayers
I love all of you.
Much Love

I'm going to keep this short and sweet.
1.) Go to courthouse look up Jordans record.
2.) Reserch Roselawns past and present problems and decide for yourself
3.) I did not blame any parents, although parents are resposable for their childrens actions untill they are 18.
4.) Just because a person gos to church it ( does not make them a good person.)
5.) No not everybody that lives in a hud house is a hoodlem.
6.) Research the crime rates of neighborhoods that have went to hud housing, decide for yourself.
7.) (AND FOR GODS AND CHUCKS FAMILY'S SAKE DON'T CALL A COLD BLOODED MURDERER A GOOD MAN.) IT IS DISRESPECTFUL.

timefertruth you got a lot of nerve, 1st of all I'm not disrespecting anyone, Chuck was very close to me so by no means would I ever disrespect him or his family. I stated that they were all good men and from what I know about them they are. I'm not making any excuses for anyone because wrong is wrong but don't you disrespect his (Jordan's) family because they have feelings also. His family has nothing to do what he did or possibly could have done, and you blaming his parent or parents is non-sense. You need to focus on your own child and children because you can raise a child right but the child makes their own choices. All I'm saying is they were good men to me and you(timefertruth) need to start thinking before talking and typing because you sound like a racist idiot. Talking about "hud houses" why did that even have to come up and I know what you are thinking 'she must live in a hud house' but no I don't. Think before you speak. And put the shoe on the other foot if your son killed someone whether is be on purpose or acidental you wouldn't want people calling your child a Cold Blooded Murderer.

( ladykaye )
RACIST? STATING FACTS IS NOT BEING A RACIST!!!!!
This is about cold blooded murder, total disrespect of human life.
It has nothing to do with race, you need to go back and read the first comment I wrote and try and comprehend what it says.
Do you not have enough intellect to understand what you are reading?
I did not single out any race I was correctly stating the
FACT that hud houses bring down property values in a neighborhood, and the crime rate goes up in those neighborhoods.
As far as blaming parents for what their kids do, I stated another fact that parents are responsable for what their children do until they are 18 years of age.
I do feel sorry for Jordan's mother but I call them as I see them, I DO NOT feel sorry for Jordan! if he did not want the title of COLD BLOODED MURDERER then he should not have taken another precious human life.
As for my children, they have been told from the day they understood right from wrong that if they were to do something wrong they would have to pay the consequences.
As for NATCHEZ I was talking about it as a whole, the city and it's population need to get some positive structure for their kids or they will have another tragedy just like this one.
AS for( Idiot )you need to go back and read sentences TWO and THREE of this comment!

I understand perfectly what you stated and I'm not a bout to argue with you behind the monitor of a computer. All I want to know is who are you to judge anyone? and as I said before when THIS world is over and done it does not matter what YOU or ANYONE else thinks, GOD has the last say and trust me his judgement will be fair, so stop the name calling and go on with your LIFE and tend to YOUR CHILDREN. I could care less what you think and I'm sure the feeling is mutual, so get a life and let sleeping dogs lie.

You cannot talk about judging someone,Was it not you who called me a Racist IDIOT?
As I said before go back and read sentences two and three of my last comment.
