Vidalia asks Danny’s Lounge to close at 2 .a.m.

Published Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Vidalia — The City of Vidalia has made a request to Danny’s Lounge that it shut down at 2 a.m. each night.

Due to altercations that take place around the club and a slew of complaints from residents, Mayor Hyram Copeland said he believes it best that the club close at 2 a.m.

“It seems like most incidences are happening after 2 a.m.,” Copeland said. “I know not all of these are your fault. We ask that you consider this and work us. I think this will hopefully cut down on incidences in the area.”

Ultimately, it was decided between the mayor, Danny’s representatives and the chief of police that a separate meeting will follow to discuss ways to alleviate crime.

Right now, it’s not mandated that the bar close its doors at the suggested time but Copeland said he feels a compromise can be reached.

He also said that with the City of Natchez and City of Ferriday considering mandating bars within its city limits close at 2 a.m., that all bar goers will filter from their respective cities to Vidalia, hence clogging its bar scene and exponentially increasing crime.

Copeland also said a curfew that’s already set in place with the city be strictly enforced in the future.

Alderman Triand McCoy said he is in favor of having a meeting to come up with ideas.

“The main concern is the safety of the people that come to Danny’s and the safety of the people who live in the area,” McCoy said.

In other business:

4A resolution was passed to honor Huey Richmond, the former superintendent of street sanitation maintenance who recently died.

Copeland estimated that Richmond worked for the city for 40 years.

“Everybody loved him, he was a pillar in this community,” Copeland said.

4The board considered amending city policy to regard hiring relatives.

Chief Ronnie “Tapper” Hendricks said one of his employees at the police department had considered trying to get a job for two relatives.

Board members were unsure of the city policy as it relates to Louisiana policy they requested that the city attorney get an opinion from the state attorney general.

4The city’s audit came back but will not be public record until Monday.

Copeland said this was no indication that anything was wrong.

“We had a good audit, we had three minor technicalities but it will be available Monday,” he said.

4City Manager Ken Walker advised the board that switching the city’s insurer from Blue Cross Blue Shield to Cigna would save the city $165,000 a year.

The board voted to make the switch.

4Two bids were received by the city for a new chipper. One for $37,490 and another for $44,448.38.

A motion was made and passed to take the bids under advisement.

It must be the Garden Club that is shutting down all the good places to get drunk. Me and my friends don't cause any trouble or hurt anything. We just like to have fun and play jokes wen we get drunk on the weekend. They are trying to shut down everythig we do and it is not right.

not that i go to any....
but it seems like bars are the only fun thing to do round here

Close the bar down. Not only is it an eye sore there are always fights happening & I'm sure CC is the ring leader like he is at every place he goes.
Anyone that goes to bars much knows who CC is.

Is it CC Rider from the legendary rock & roll song?

Garden club in Vidalia? I think the only reason I read online anymore is to see how stupid some people are that write on this.

"Oh C....CC Rider" hahahahaaGopherBaroque!!! Who the heck is CC? Well, I don't barhop anymore...or stay out late. There's nothing GOOD going on that late. (I hate it when my parents were right) I'm not down on people who party...heck yeah, it's fun...but 2am is just too dadgum late for any memories to be made precious. It just gets nasty after midnight.

The town council decided to switch insurance just like that? Did they check out the premium difference or coverage difference? $165,000 could be a lot of goodies lost on employee insurance policies. (That's the part of the story they don't print)

My thought exactly mike8427! They attack the garden club and blame everything on the garden clubs in Natchez!
go fiqure

Well for everyone i used to party at these bars and yes the fights would normally break out after two but its not the cities place to make them close there doors thats how the owners make there money. If people want to stay and drink after 2 thats up to them and their wallet!! Now i disagree with one of the comments above* there are a lot of things to do in natchez other than bars!*

Fenwick...let me get something straight before an all-out war is begun. The Vidalia Garden Club is not to be compared with her sister across the river. In Vidalia, you don't have to own an antebellum home, have a "special name", or have a huge bank account. It's all about the love of gardening and beautifying our city. That's it. Club members will actually speak to you when they see you grocery shopping...and may even ask you to join, if you love gardening. The only plot the Vidalia Garden Club is concerned with is winning the "Cleanest City" award the state gives out every year.

(Last I heard, redusmfan spotted the Natchez Petticoat Mafia slinking into their undergound bunker to plan the upcoming visit with Iran's President. I hear they're giving away framed pictures of Adolf Hitler) See how ridiculous that sounds?

if you just MUST drink alcohol stay HOME to do it. Those places are nothing but asking for trouble. a drunk will do any thing, with no remorse! it altered the thought process.

Well maybe the Garden Club isn't doing it this time. But that's what everyone else says that they don't want us to have fun. Me and my friends don't cause any problems. Getting puking drunk is the only thing around here to do since we don't have a race track or stuff like that. On weeknds we like to stay downtown and get drunk till we vommit and it doesn't hurt anyone and it makes us laugh. maybe if we had some tractor pulls or races we'd have more. But now they are even trying to stop the chicken fights.

Fenwick
Puking all over the place for someone else to clean up shows how very inmature you are. I'm sure you must look a pathetic sight vomiting like a baby. I'm sure you parents are very proud of their offspring!!!! Maybe somone should video you & let you see what a complete jackA** you are making of yourself & your family name.

Miss Over The Hill, it sounds like you are trying to be mean to me but i will be nice even though you mite be one of those ladys of the Garden Club. Me and my friends do not bother anyone unless we are just joking around and then everyone thinks its funny. Not to long back downtown some old boy had left his truck right outside and we took turns going outside to vommit in the back of it. I could only vommit two times but there was this one old boy was able to vomit in there 4 times. it was funny and everyone there thought it was funny and we laughed about the old boy finding his truck bed full of vommit. I bet if you had been there you would have been laughing just as hard as we did.

good move Vidalia

I agree with the above commentors that state not much GOOD happenning after 2 am

Just an accident waiting to happen and bad boys looking for trouble

CC et all will soon find out, the late night bar scene is going nowhere and will wind up screwing up their life

idiots

And for your info you don't have to have lots of money or an antebellum home to be in the Natchez garden clubs, all you have to have his a good heart for Natchez, I know cause my family was in them and they are good for Natchez.

Amen overthehill , he'll just have to learn the hard way, if he keeps it up he'll wind up in jail with DWI, I just hope he doesn't kill someone driving drunk, cause anyone out past 2am is going to be driving drunk, I'm sure of that.

Natchez should have done that to UndertheHill Saloon years ago

Well most cities have rules of how bars are operated ... reason being is that any bar owner is responsible for the saftey and conduct in which his patrons act upon..

Meaning that the owner is responsible for maintaining the situation should fighting occur and seeing that it does not escalate and if it should then shame on him because he can have them banned from the location to prevent future problems...

The city can , will and has the legal right to shut down any establishment should the owner not be able to control the crowd... if a business recieves many complaints and ploice are called out repeatadly and on numerous occasions then yes the city does have the right to close the establishment down..

Why? because it is a menace to society as a whole and it is leading up to someone possibly getting killed... it is the resonsibility of the bar owner to maintain a resonable and safe enviroment of its patrons...if they know a patron or patrons are going there to cause problems then they should have them banned or removed from the business to avoid future problems and save their own business...

If the owners are allowing this to happen then they are just as guilty as the ones causing the problems...therefore they deserve to be shut down and the city also has the right to deny them any future bar license due to this fact... common sense will go along way when actually used....

vomiting will occur when someone has reached their limit but thats expected even in the best of establishments its the fighting, bodily injury and weapons that can cause a business to be closed... fights will happen at times but it is all in how it is handled... and that makes the difference!

I have never been to this establishment and have no intentions of going but the from whats been said it is a ruff place and probably does need to be closed before someone looses their life...

Aside from the fights and other things occuring, did anyone stop to think about the drug usage that was occuring? Not in the club that I know of, but in the parking lot for sure. How many of the people posting on this forum would have the nerve to walk up to a complete stranger in the parking lot, ask to borrow a lighter, and light up a JOINT in front of said stranger?? Yes, this is a true story, and YES this did happen to myself and a friend. That was the first and last time I ever went to Danny's.

Was it the first time it happened like that? I doubt it! Good for Vidalia, I'm really glad they finally got smart, but I just wish they would send some officers to check things out, not in patrol cars, but in their own vehicles to see what's really going on there.

I can't believe you all are arguing with someone that is probably 19 at the most. Keep on, young people are generally very reasonable and take advice well!
Once again, there is no reason to close the bars at 2:00, it resolves nothing. They will just take the party elsewhere (on the road) and cause the same exact problems.
For those of you arguing against drinking, you are entitled to make decisions in your life as everyone else does. You are not entitled to judge people when they are not doing anything illegal or immoral.

In regard to the city policy on hiring relatives, what about the different members of the staggs family that are employed by the city of vidalia; aren't they related to the mayor??? If this policy applies to the police department, it should apply to all departments of the city of vidalia and maybe we can get rid of all of these **** kissers; not to mention cutting down on people being given jobs based on WHO they know and not WHAT they know.

Its crazy to think government is allowed to mandate hours of operation for a buisness.

I understand that bars and nightclubs are high risk for crime, problems, etc. But it is the responsibility of the buisness owner to regulate its customers, not government.

Local government should have fines and penalties in place for problem locations, but regulating when you can open and close your business is over the line.

Make the business owners responsible!

The Insurance coverage for the City of Vidalia has changed 2 or 3 times in the last 4 yrs. No, they do not look at the coverage, only their out of pocket expense. You would think that the city would really want to take care of the employees ..... VIDALIA is growing! This is the first I have heard of them wanting to change or should I say 'CHANGING' our coverage, but not surprised ... who gets a raise now?

If I am not mistaken, most of the CRIME, drug busts, MURDERS ect...are happening on weeknights when the majority of Natchez clubs are not even open.
Seems most of the crime is happening in neighborhoods.

I think a closing law is absolutely ridiculous---the all night weekend nightlife is a draw to Natchez.

I don't live in your beautiful state but have visited several times. In my state all bars close at 2 and I see no reason they should stay open any later.DUI's and fighting are bad enough without staying open any later than that. You can always invite your buddies to your home to party after that..but DON'T let your friends drive home drunk!

I agree with the Owner of the establishment; he and only he should mandate the hours...unless a law is already in effect. On the other hand; the city of Vidalia P.D. is always responsible for the (bad things) that happen after hours or durning. That's your job boys. Do it better and it won't be a problem. The little kids...(teens) are not your problem, it's the 20's, 30's, 40's and I think by 50 we all know better. Amen...Should have learned it in your 20's!!! I love that town...I was raised there. We always knew all the cops and had good relations with them...Go, Vidalia...God Bless you all..and yours.

I don't understand why It take all night to have a good time. Back in the day when the owner Danny himself ran the place and I use to go there it closed at 2 a.m. we had a good time. I believe they need to go back to that, because it is so much different with this generation of kids. They are popping pills, mixing all these energy drinks with liquor and ect. no it's not going to make them go home they will go somewhere else but at least the owners won't have that on them if something terrible happens. In this day and time we need to be encouraging them to pray, not worry about a club staying open all night.

The way I see it, if Ferriday can refuse to allow in a bingo parlor because of the potential to cause problems, then Vidalia can insist all bars close at 2am because of the potential for problems.

My husband and I were coming home about 4:30 Sunday morning,we had been night fishing at the locks and dam. When we got to Clinton Street, there were about 8 cars waiting to go.We entered Industrial Park Road. They came that way too.We were going to Ferriday. As soon as they got to 84,they started racing. They were 2 at a time.I was driving about 58 mph. When they passed us they sounded like sonic booms. It was a liitle scary. And I know these people were coming from Danny's.Thank God there was very little traffic at that time of the morning and it was a Sunday too.Ther should be policeman at red light at Kaiser's Mobile. They could catch some of these thugs. But like some one said, they would have to be in unmarked cars.

him2her, the staggs are not related to the mayor. Get your facts straight. This story had nothing to do with hiring anyone. Why do people always interject statements that are false? I wish people would do research before they make false statements, it would make life alot easier. Stick to the story. This bar should close at 2 or even before if they cannot act right after midnight.

him2her, you need to get your facts straight before you rant and rave about things you know nothing about. The mayor is not related to the Stagg family. He knows just about everyone and calls most of them his friend. What is your beef with someone having a job and doing their job? Can only people work for Vidalia that the mayor does not know? It would be hard to find someone like that. Seems to me you are unhappy with your lot in life so you want to make waves for the ones you don't like, how sad! On the subject of Danny's Lounge, the owners have not been consistent in their controlling what goes on in and around their business. They could be shut down because of all the complains over the years. If all the bars in Natchez close at 2am then Vidalia would see too many people cross the bridge and possibly cause more problems than already exist. Natchez Belle, how can you say that the VPD is responsible for all the bad things happening? Doing their jobs have nothing to do with someone doing drugs and driving drunk. Do you think they buy them the drugs and alcohol and make them take it? The police can only catch the ones they see and I do believe they do their job. If you have any ideas how to do it better then let all of us know. Justayappin, why don't you call city hall and find out about any change in your insurance.

I don't think Danny's Lounge should have to close by 2am. Unlawful activity takes place all of the time any hour of the day, so why is this club the exception? Since the city is making this request, why don't they step in along with the owner of the club to beef up the security outside the club and share the expense if there is an expense incurred? 1-No one can hang out in the parking lot or in their cars and perhaps they have one of those detectors to check patrons as they enter the club so they KNOW no one has a weapon on them. 2)They could also place an older age restriction if it is believed younger patrons are the cause of any problems. There are already few places to go for a good "clubbing" or nightlife experience in this area as it is. I know I had big fun there back the the day.

MsKitty and Vilou, if you took the time to read my post correctly, I did not make a statement of fact, I asked for confirmation in the form of a question (note the ???? marks). I did not make an attack on the mayor I was simply pointing out that if there was a city policy on hiring relatives it should be followed by all departments.

As for my comment being posted under the article of Danny's lounge, if you read the entire article it not only discusses the closing of the lounge it talks about other city business (such as the policy of hiring relatives).

So before you start jumping on your soap box, accusing people of making attacks on others and being unhappy with their life maybe you should stop being so defensive, stop jumping to conclusions and take a good look at the big picture not just want you want to see.

For the first time, scientists have proven that "beer goggles" are real - other people really do look more attractive to us if we have been drinking.

Surprisingly, the beer goggles effect was not limited to just the opposite sex among the ostensibly straight volunteers recruited for the study - they also rated people from their own sex as more attractive.

Him2Her, you need to read your post again. You implied the employees were a-kissers and did not know how to do their jobs. It was, who they knew, not what they knew. The mayor hires and fires so you had to be talking about him hiring all the do nothings and a-kissers. why not just ask if the Staggs are related to the mayor instead of such a hostile post. Has someone rubbed you the wrong way? What is wrong with defending someone who has a hard job and from my observation doing it well. Why is it I'm on a soapbox and you are not? To The Duke, with the help of others the Mayor has made Vidalia a better place to live. Danny,s lounge is a problem but the Mayor and Board members are trying to work with the owner to make it a safer place. The owner has to work to change things for the better are he probably will have to close.
