Miss-Lou should head to bed

Published Thursday, August 14, 2008

By 2 a.m. it’s just time to trade Danny’s Lounge for the Barcalounger.

Comfortable recliners, couches and beds are the best place to be in the wee morning hours, and it’s time local governments enforced that fact.

Natchez Mayor Jake Middleton started talking about a bar bedtime a few weeks ago. It’s a good idea.

Now, Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland sees the writing on the wall. If Natchez bars close, Vidalia bars are likely to fill quickly with patrons who may already be well on the way to being intoxicated.

At Danny’s Lounge in Vidalia, no more trouble is needed.

The bar has been the site of shootings, drug deals and an array of other crimes for years now. The city was already considering its options to curtail the problem, and Tuesday night, city leaders proposed a new idea — close the doors at 2 a.m.

Leaders across the Miss-Lou would be wise to adopt the same bar bedtime quickly. Earlier closing times will not significantly impact the sales of local establishments. The bedtime would simply serve as a crime prevention mechanism.

We are all safer in the living room recliner than on the streets anyway.

You must have lost your collective senses...not only is this attitude prudish, it also interferes with Natchez' claim to be a little bit of New Orleans without the big city problems...why would you espouse support for tourism and then try to kill the nightlife that is essential to tourism's attraction?

There are plenty of laws on the books to deal with Danny's without telling other responsible citizens when and what they should do! You go sit in the Barcalounger if you choose too, I won't interfere with your lethargy, but don't interfere with the folks rights to party, it helps draw people to Natchez.

Mr. Sammohon is right. We want to party and it is wrong for them to try and make us go home. We have never hurt any body. WE hit a mail box going home one time but it was old and that was funny any way and still no one was hurt.

"The bedtime will reduce crime"..????
If I am not mistaken, most of the CRIME, drug busts, MURDERS ect...are happening on weeknights when the majority of Natchez clubs are not even open.
Seems most of the crime is happening in neighborhoods.

I think a closing law is absolutely ridiculous---the all night weekend nightlife is a draw to Natchez.

Hometown, thats a very good suggestion. But I'm guessing local law enforcement has some very good reasons for not doing that.

I don't think this was on the list of things to do when our mayor took office. Stop the goverment waste, get rid of the dead heads in our goverment offices, FIX THE STREETS. This is such a petty and stupid thing to start talking about after being in office for 1 1/2 months. Can't our mayor get on to real problems like finding a way to lower the taxes, get the schools in order, and clean their own backyard up first? What happens when all these casinos that are open 24/7 have customers from out of town that want to go out and see some night life. Natchez mayors are not famous for making good decisions, i.e convention center, visitors center, waste, waste waste. I thought the open container law was going to stop the trash on the street. Doesn't this city have a sweeper? They use it after parades. Why not early Saturday and Sunday mornings downtown. And how the mayor of Vidalia can compare their nightlife or Dannys to our bars and nigtlife is beyond me. These 2 mayors surely have something better to do. I have seen the under the hill saloon fill up with people at 1:45am from the delta queen docking. What are they going to do when they close at 2am, tell everybody you have 15 minutes to party then go back to the boat? Even though a good portion of the tax money is wasted, this city needs every tax dollar it can get. Even if it comes from the bars. During hunting season, mardi gras, pagent time, and the holidays there is a lot of people out past 2am. Not to mention, we hope, when 3 casinos are open with people comming from out of town. There is already laws on the book for littering, fighting, indecent exposure, disturbing the peace, or drunk driving. Enforce those laws first before makeing or passing a stupid law that surely will not do anything but make our town less for what it is famous for.

Forget the time for bars to close.
Just have the Police Officers start hanging
around and watching the drunks leaving
and then pick them up for DWI.
It will not take long before they close.

The best stuff that happens after midnight takes place in private and never gets talked about. That's the reason a lot of the folks are still out -- waiting for that to happen.

Now if you folks at the Democrat are too old or too out of touch to know that so be it. But these people who want to stay out have an agenda -- or hope to have an agenda.

The convenience of you managing society in the fashion you wish should consider that -- it's tough enough already for some people to get their freak on.

Yeahuhuh, Do tell? Really! What's all this juicy stuff that goes on?:-)

scarlettohara, you might not want to ask. I certainly hope that it doesn't have anything to do with 4 used condoms in one spot on a downtown sidewalk early in the morning.

Why do we cry about recreation for the children? It's to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. The bars are in a way the recreation for adults. If the people have something to do it keeps them off the streets. If you close the bars, people will just drive around town from party to party and drink anyways. There are a few who choose not to act right, but should local govt. punish a whole industry for what a few people do? I think to close down bars would be a grave mistake. Natchez and Vidalia each have laws about noise, littering, and fighting. Start enforcing the laws that we have and you will find that there is no need for new laws.

This is what conservative thinking gets you...

Guess what? Subscribe to all this bible-beating crapola, all this "how it was is how it should be" or "back in MY day, sonny" mess that everyone hollers about and how it's so great, THIS is what you get.

Adults are no longer adults. We must give all people a bed-time and we're all supposed to say "Thank you Mother" for it.

Give over an INCH of your ability to think to anyone, and they'll take a MILE of your rights away.

And for the record, if you don't like what consenting, legal adults do in their free time at all hours of the night, then just don't do it with them. As far as I'm concerned regarding those four used condoms... sheesh.. at least they USED condoms.

Fenwick, so did you go back and fix the mailbox or pay to have it fixed? You say no one was hurt, but someone had to do the repairs.

If people have to hang around bars until someone is drunk enough to be willing, they have bigger problems than can be solved here.

If the bars staying open all night leads to people leaving their condoms on the sidewalk, then I am in favor of closing. We really shouldn't have to pay people to clean up what shouldn't be there in the first place.

Maybe if we didn't have some getting too drunk to drive, destroying property, car wrecks, fights and trash all over the streets and sidewalks; then people wouldn't care if the bars stayed open 24/7.

Mr. Fire, I wish I could vote for Mayor. I think that you people should vote Jake West out of his office. It should be about time for and election.

Miss Iluvntz, We didn't stop and fix it because we wer going home at the time. The next time we saw it the people had put up a new one so it was not a issue anymore. But it was real funny and you would have laughed to if you had been with us.

Well, I for one don't know how yall know exactly what time those thingies were thrown out on the sidewalk. How do you know they weren't thrown out during the day time and no one else had spotted them til you walked past? It could have happened the day before. For all we know, there could be someone working down there during the daylite hours and being safe about it. But, one things for sure, yall have sure burnt up some typing time on here talking about them. Everyone should know they were there now.

They now have proof that the girls do get prettier at closing time.

Miss Peace. I can vote but I do not live in Natchez. Maybe they will let me vote there but I did not think they would so I have not tried. I was thinking you had to live near a town to vote for the mayor. I live out of town and we just come to town to by grocerys and to get drunk on weekends. I think Natchez has some real pretty girls and that is why we come there to get drunk with them.

Black, I am as conservative as they come, middle age with kids and attend church every Sunday. I am very against making private companies close at certain times. Government needs to stay out of it. That is part of the appeal that draws people to Natchez whether they choose to stay out all night or not. I have no desire to stay out past 10:00, but if I choose to have a once every 20 year all nighter, I can do it. I know people from all parts of the country that love to come to Natchez because we don't have all of these rediculus laws that every other town has that is our size. Their are enough laws in place to handle all of the problems that are occuring. I think that they should put a police office on foot downtown on weekends, not to harass and arrest everyone that walks out of a bar, but just to have a presence and let them know that someone is watching. Tourist don't come to towns to get arrested. I miss the times when police officers weren't necessarily here to arrest you when you were doing wrong, but willig to help point you on the straight and narrow. You use to could walk out with an open container and if a police office saw you, he would remind you that you had to throw it a way. Know they are just looking for something to arrest you on. Believe me, I am a law abiding citizen and LOVE the police. I just think that common sense has been taken completely out of laws and government. So come on, let adults be adults and lets not let govenment be our baby sitters.

Thanks for that NPC. Now THAT is a conservative viewpoint like I was raised with.

I still think the police bend a little on some things. They have to. But the legislature uses them unfairly to look tough to voters, and I don't think it is fair to the cops.

What ever happened to the conservatives that chose to live the way they did and flew the flag for everyone to be free, even those poor souls who did not toe the moral line with them?

They got scared of liberals, potheads, drunks, drugs, running out of money, moral decay and the Lord sending the whole country to hell. Then they turned into nasty people who are liberal with punishment, guns, hatred and prisons but like to say they are conservatives otherwise.

Real conservatives are the salt of the Earth. Political conservatives seem mostly to be out for #1 and use government to get their way worse than the other side. Judging from the last 8 years they seem to be right on one thing -- government will sure mess up a good thing.

It seems we have consensus! Hooray!

Fenwick...your actions are reckless, immature and dangerous both to you and anyone who happens to be around when you're acting as you describe...your comments also don't help, but contrarily hurt the argument.

I wouldn't waste my time trying to reach Fenwick, Sam. I've come to the conclusion that he's just a kid trying to get a rise out of all of us by making outrageous statements.

I could be wrong, and he could be authentic. If so...God help him!

OldGrandDad
You're a nasty old man that only has one thing on his mind:
4 used condoms in one spot on a downtown sidewalk early in the morning. You are NASTY! The kind of men we teach our children to be aware of!
If you are a grand dad I hope your children warn there kids about their nasty old gramps!
