Natchez High School quarterback Javon Washington dodges Jefferson County’s Kevin Lewis to score a touchdown during Friday night’s game in Fayette.

Bulldogs bite back

Published Saturday, August 30, 2008

FAYETTE — Led by Javon Washington on offense and a better-than-expected defense, Natchez High defeated the Jefferson County Tigers 42-14 Friday night.

Washington completed 14 of 20 passes for 204 yards and Rico Richardson completed his only pass of the game for 22 yards and a touchdown. Washington also had eight carries for 57 yards and a touchdown.

“We started off slow, but we picked it up,” Natchez High assistant coach Ivan Evans said about the offense. “(Washington) made some nice reads and some nice throws.”

Natchez High (1-0) took a 20-6 halftime lead and pulled away in the second half as the Bulldogs avenged last year’s 30-27 loss at home to Jefferson County. The defense had one of its best games in some time as it forced several turnovers.

“I was pleased with the effort. Tackling was good except for a couple of times,” Bulldogs head coach Lance Reed said. “Defensively, we blocked a punt. We recovered two fumbles and had an interception. We rushed the passer fairly well.”

Derek Matthews led the Bulldogs in receiving with two catches for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Natchez High will travel to the Gulf Coast to take on Gulfport next Friday at 7:30 p.m. while Jefferson County (0-1) plays at Port Gibson at 7:30 p.m.

I was wondering why last year everyone was bragging on Jefferson County! Didn't know it was luck. Well, way to go Natchez on your BIG win, keep them coming. Good job coaches and staff!

They got lucky last year . Luck didn't help them this time . I hope the tissue man made a lot of money off crying JC fans . Where's the trash talk now ? On to better things Bulldogs !

Here's your trash talk. Just wait until next year Bulldogs. But seriously. I said on the last article that we don't have the same boys we had last year. I expected it to be worst. No crying here. Last year wasn't luck. Them damn boys were good, but now they are gone. Congratulations, Bulldogs. I'm still proud of you Tigers. If half our football team was on a powerlifting team, then I'm sure we would have had a chance. Keep your heads up Tigers.

Drawpaintsing here's some trash for you trying to make sorry excuses . Everybody in highschool moves on . You just got beat . Ha ha ha ha ha !

I personally don't believe in luck, but I guess one good excuse deserves another. We had our victory last year and whether it was luck as you say or not, we still won. But as you have already said "everybody in high school moves on." You won and congratulations, it is the man that can move on that really wins in the end. Whether we win or lose, I still support my team, the TIGERS. The season just got started and maybe "luck" will be on our side again. And by the way, if by chance you make it to the playoffs this year, because we are both from the southern district, I will support you too.

One down 1 to go. We got to go one week at a time. Its funny because last year we lost to JC but beat Gulfport. Hopefully history wont repeat itself again this year and for once we can start off at least 2-0. I think our Dawgs can handle the pressure. They practicing on Saturdays right after gameday too. That shows the committment that these guys are putting in to make it far as the hard work will take them. One at a time fellas, one at a time!

I dont think its luck. It just depends on who can execute better on gameday. Yeah, hard work pays off, but it takes nothing less than that. Both teams worked at it. My brother is the kicker for Natchez, and he mised quite a few last night because he didnt go through the fudamentals of kicking and keep his head down and follow through with his stride. Like I told him, "you just have to learn from the mistakes and look past them because we go need you in Gulfport because I know its go be a close one too".
I did a lot of trash talking last year from Iraq plus I made a little comment last week, but not this year. Instead, Im behind both teams and hope they both make it as far as possible. Good luck to everybody and GOD bless both teams and fans this year!

Justice, you fell right into my trap. I knew somebody was going to say I was making excuses. Your own fans asked for trash talk, and I gave it to them. I was going to talk trash regardless. I true fan can take a loss. Like I said, before, "Congratulations, Bulldogs". See you in basketball. I have moved on. Hello, TRON601. Nice post. You all have a nice day. I have a busy day ahead.

Why is it that when teams from the same immediate trade area play each other the intensity is so great . The atmosphere is almost like that of a state title at stake . Kind of makes you wonder if local teams playing each other and bragging rights is worth it .

Drawpaintsing it was no trap . I've read your past posts and I know that you can trash talk with the best of them in sports .

Hi TRON601,
Glad you made it back safely from Iraq. I agree with you, gator, and drawpaintsing, we are rivals (have been ever since I can remember and that's a long time because I graduated high school in 1972 (smile), but we don't have to be enemies. I support my home team in Jefferson County when they play, but I also support Claiborne, Adams, Wilkinson, and Franklin Counties, when they are not playing against us. ......I shout, "MAY GOD BLESS ALL."

Wait till FC gets hold of the Natchez Bulldogs!!!!

Posted by BJ1979 (anonymous) on August 30, 2008 at 3:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Congrats bulldogs you executed ur game plan better than we did. There were a lot of miscues and mistakes on both sides. JC just seemed to make more. We had a lot of opportunities to turn the game around but did no capitalize on them. That's the kind of thing that happens when u play this great game. Like I said before the game was gonna come down to who made the least amount of mistakes. Hope ntz does well the rest of the season. I know our coaches are gonna go back to da drawing board and prepare the boys for the rest of what I belive will still be a wonderful season with one blemish so far. But still I'm a TIGER 4 life. P.S. Go ahead an soften up FC for us. GO TIGERS!!!!!08
