Casino sees delays
Published Tuesday, September 16, 2008
NATCHEZ — The Roth Hill casino project’s approval from the Mississippi Gaming Commission to proceed with the development has expired.
Mississippi Gaming Commission Deputy Director Allen Godfrey said the developer Natchez Enterprises had six months to submit the project’s financial documents and never did.
“They never got them in order so that approval expired,” Godfrey said.
For the Lane Company, this means no construction work can begin until the commission’s approval is given.
Natchez Enterprises President Ted Doody said this is because for the last 90 to 120 plans for the project have been reworked.
Due to flooding earlier this year, the low-lying base of Roth Hill Road was covered in water.
To avoid any potential problems with flooding in the future, Doody said plans were being modified to prevent that.
“We had to let our approval expire because we changed our designs,” he said.
The plan is to submit the financial documents for the October commission meeting.
Godfrey said while approval expiration isn’t entirely uncommon, the commission finds mostly that developers want to move as expediently as possibly on projects.
The Mississippi Gaming Commisison approval isn’t the only one that will have to be once more attained, Doody said.
City approval is necessary because of the changes made.
One such change in plans is scaling the project down from a two-story building to a one-story building.
Doody said the project is still the same but they created efficiencies in the building’s space.
He said the building was originally drawn out to be 50,000 square feet but has been reduced to approximately 42,000 square feet.
He said removing the second floor is actually more beneficial.
“(It) lends itself to a better casino layout,” Doody said. “It’s a more enjoyable experience for guests because they don’t have to go up and down.”
He said as planning wraps up, new renderings of the design will be released in a few weeks.

In one area of town, buildings can't be too tall, the other? Well, you can't much lower than on story...lol. I do wish them good weather. 80° for the high, today! 'Trick or Treat'...treat for me...lol.

This is one project that I do not see ever getting completed. The casino that is in Natchez already barely stays afloat and teh new one already being built is going to "spread the butter very thin on the toast", so to speak. A third one would be the demise of the owner. I can not see where there would be enough patrons to keep all 3 open.

One casino here in Ms. played host to a poker tourney and brought in players from Las Vegas, Reno and all over the U.S. The city announced that double digit millions were spent during the week by all the visitors. Boy, just think what Natchez could do with revenue like that for one week. 6k signed up for the tourney. That's the sign of the 'new' times and it's taking over. Of course if the 'new' times took over here in Natchez, the 'blue-haired mafia?' would be in a snit b/c they would have to take a back seat to all the gamblers of the 'new age' and that wouldn't be their cup of tea would it? So I guess the local gamblers will just have to continue to hide in the little backrooms of the local bars or rent a private room at a hotel/motel for their games without the city or county recieving any benefit from their 'grown-up' sport. But I guess that's ok, we still have tourism to keep Natchez 'a-float'.

Destiny,
I agree with the basics of what you are saying and if you read some of my previous comments from April, there will be no question as to how much distaste I have for the Blue-hair Brigade, Hysterical Society and the Natchez Prevention Society. BUT, the need for long term jobs for the average Joe in Natchez should be first and foremost on the agenda, not an occassional tourism job.
Nobody will make it in Natchez selling pralines on the sidewalk in front of those old houses...or casinos....Natchez needs to be trying to lure real industry, just like a windmill factory or another company like RENTECH....or another corn-to-gasohol plant.

We have said that before, but they seem to multiply just like cockroaches...and they never die off. The bunch that was in charge of Natchez when I was in high school has died, but the next generation took over without ever missing a beat...but of course, they have no heart so they could not ever miss a "beat"

How does a casino see?

I very much agree with you red, but think of the idea that maybe one of the gambling miilionaries that could be lured to Natchez via the games would take a notice of Natchez and could be lured into doing what we need here. Industry, I mean. Who knows who could be holding the 'Aces' and bring in a clean energy plant or what ever the furture holds. We need to start thinking of the future and let the past take care of itself. The hard working poor folks here in Natchez can't live on the past. We keep getting poorer while taking care of the tourist that come here for the past. We cannot financially move from Natchez even if we wanted to, we're stuck here, it is our home as well as home to the private sector. So the best thing to do is take the bull by the horns and make a complete turn around and put this private sector in it's own little private world and stop letting them get away with their dictatorship. It's time for the public sector to step up to the plate. Unite and let the private sector know we are tired of it. They love taking the taxes from the poor, but they have as of yet to do anything for the hard working poor public sector. It's definitly time to make a change. Does anyone have the courage to make the change?

Does anyone really care about another casino???
This is an invitation to destroy our community in my opinion, people that cannot control their lives are tempted to throw away their paychecks for the empty promise of a JACKPOT and will do it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, a few people will get minimum wage jobs
SO WHAT- for the most part this is a hole in our economy that will siphon money OUT of the community and line the pockets of fat cat casino mafia. It make me sick.

Destiny-
what are you talking about? what nonsense you spew!!!
Any high rollers coming to a casino for a poker tournament are staying at the casino hotel, playing at the casino, eating at the casino, drinking at the casino, and then leaving town.
They will NOT spread any money around town to locals.

Blue haired mafia? What a joke!!!
are you nuts? You're talking about hard working families that have invested EVERYTHING they have into homes and real estate to have a decent life
Can you fault anyone for trying to live the American Dream?
Come on and quit trying to put blame on those that CAN to make yourself feel better for your own FAILURE to take a risk and DO SOMETHING for yourself!!!

Let's just face the facts
If you want to live in a big city, you need to move.
If you would enjoy working in a factory, well that's your choice, you need to move.
If you want to live in a nice small city that is beautiful, tourist and retirement oriented-- you're in the right place. You can be content with working for someone who had the smarts and effort to start a business and make it work, or start your own. There are job opportunities here, I have met several folks lately that have MOVED TO NATCHEZ and got a job. I'm sick and tired of you bellyaching crybabies that want to blame someone else for your own failure to take action and make something of yourself.
We can make Natchez better, yes, but only within certain reasonable limits. And I like it like that. Finally after all my life I can breathe clean air that doesn't have that foul IP smell that some people foolishly claim is the smell of money - hogwash I say. With a good plan we can improve industry but for God's Sake let's have it downwind.
Posted by mslugirl (anonymous) on September 16, 2008 at 12:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)
That is exactly what happens....People MOVE TO NATCHEZ and get the good jobs, not the people that have lived here for years and tried to raise their family here. New people come in, get the jobs, and our children have to leave home for a better job. Some of the people struggling to hang on to their hometown for a living are members of families that have also lived here for years, just like the ones who have everything.

Krogers, you need to get a life. How can you own your own business and manage it properly and be on these blogs constantly as you are. You are probably another dead beat like several that we have on here that want to spew venom constantly. Your loud mouth spewings mean nothing to me. Even tho' I have read several of your blogs that at the time made sense, you have just destroyed what little respect I had for you. You seem to exist only to find the window of opportunity open a small crack to enable you to pounce on someone. You are an egotiscal, fanatical no-where person who proves this when you get off your meds.

By the way Krogers how do you suppose 6 thousand people could stay at the casino hotel at the same time? And they were there for the week. Even all our motels/hotels in the nearby vacinity could not have held that many people. Give everybody a break and get off these blogs long enough to take your meds....

krogers, the problem with your idea about Natchez is eventually the population will decrease to nothing! And you cannot argue with the census that indicates the steep decline! My guess is that your one of those people whose life expectancy is almost over. And 10 years after your dead we will have a whopin 5,000 citizens!

I'm a little confused, mslugirl says people "MOVE TO NATCHEZ AND GET THE GOOD JOBS", while redusmfan says there are no jobs because of the old ladies with money and clout. I'm wondering what good jobs are out there, that people are fighting to get into Natchez for,and that locals have no chance of getting

People here live in a dream world! On top of that, we want to blame everyone else for all our problems (Blue hair mafia, etc..)... Problems in Natchez go much further than just the local level. The state we live in has been as much of a detrement to our growth as the city itself. Our narrow minded, backward way of thinking has held us back in many respects. The majority of our citizens have a pathetic work ethic, are lazy, and expect everything to be given to them free of charge. We have a poor excuse of a school system that most people relocating to a community would not even consider. We have a bunch of rednecks with no civic pride what so ever.
Then we have a bunch of pretentious wanabees that think they are too good to lift a finger and make improvements to their community. Our small town could be so much more if not for all the ignoramoses who reside here... For all you nay sayers who are anti casinos--who is holding a gun to your head making you go onboard and spend your hard earned money???? MSLUGIRL: What have you been smoking? What people are moving here for what JOBS???
The few people I have met that came from elsewhere (by the way, I relate better to those who come from far away) are either retired, or don't have to work... All joking aside, PEOPLE, PEOPLE,--- quit bashing everything that goes on around here---- Its so easy to sit in your doublewide and poo poo anything different that comes this way! Be positive, supportive, and lend a hand to make this place the special place that it could be!!!!

first of all if people are going to a casino and they take their hard earn money thats them, but don't cry about it cause you know what your doing when you do it. now if you go to a casino just to have a few hrs of fun and it want brake you to where you can't pay bills, then have fun. now if all everyone wants to do is b??ch all the time, cause things aren't done your way or you don't see eye to eye on something then try to come to a medium happy where it makes everyone is happy and getting what they want. how is it that having another boat here is going to help, besides with jobs.

Eric,
A few years ago, I was trying to move back to Natchez and do something good for the area with my education. I tried real hard for a year. I did everything that I could do and the best job I was offered was $40k a year. Then, they wanted 6 days a week and no personal life while I bowed down to kiss their a##. Well, I got enough of the total complacency of the whole area and the few people that were pulling all the strings, so I came back to the Jackson area. Then, My first job was $60 with a company truck, gas card, and employee benefits. The company in Natchez tried to hold total control over my life, while the company in Jackson gave me plenty of time to have a REAL life away from work.
Now, I am self employed, and doing close to $95k yearly. There are some struggles, but I have been happy to be away from Natchez. I go down there about every 3-6 months to check on family matters, but see no real chance of ever moving back or even breaking the clique in construction down there. So, I come on here and encourage many friends to keep fighting from the inside to change the whole climate and demeanor of Natchez..
Their are no real jobs there that will support a healthy family of 4 or 5. You can find some work, but you will not get ahead, only barely make ends meet if you live on a tight budget.
So, now you know some more details about the Red USM Fan.

To make clear what I said: The jobs that do come to town, ie: the prison, Rentech, casinos, and any other business, bring in their own people for the higher paying jobs and the lower paying ones go to locals. GETALIFENATCHEZ..I resent you implying that just because I had an opinion, I was "smoking something"...If you relate better to those from "far away", maybe that's where you need to be.

mslugirl,i see what your saying and has for redusmfan you are right it's very hard to make it here in natchez when the jobs don't pay anything. i am lucky,my husband has a great job and we don't blow our money on needless things.my husband and i made agreement when we got married, he would work and i would take care of the house, yard, kids, ect. and thats been 12yrs ago and it has worked out great, thanks to GOD and hard work. i don't blame you for not wanting to come back.

MSLUGIRL: Our major employers have to truck in staff from elsewhere because of the total lack of competent people to chose from locally. I crack up when something new comes here (retail/restaurant). They bring in management from else where to get things kicked off, but you know good in well when the out of town staff takes off, that business is going to go to hell in a handbasket when the locals take over running things. Don't imply MSLUGIRL that I need to relocate... It's people like me that are trying their darnest to change things around here and I refuse to let people like you run me off.... You and Dragonflyday are cut from the same cloth.... I will not however continue the back and forth bashing.... I'll stick to my guns......

I look at the spelling and grammar of certain people on this blog, and that further drives home my point of why new companies have to bring in staff/ management from out of town! It is scary what some of our local schools are producing and turning loose on the streets! Ignorance is alive and well in Natchez, Mississippi (not that we run a monopoly on poverty and ignorance I should add).... Good grief!

GETALIFENATCHEZ: This is most insane, to be on here putting down people and a town that you obviously have NO loyalty to. If it is so ingnorant, then please LEAVE. People in Nathcez have been running businesses long before you came here, and will continue to do so.
Posted by ericstratton (anonymous) on September 17, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I think GETALIFES loyalty to Natchez is unquestionable.Looking back at his past blogs,he shows his dedication to the town but also his frustrations with the "throw the arms in the air attitude " so many on this site tend to exhibit when something they dont agree with happens.People gripe at the old ladies of Natchez who have supposedly ruined it so many times with their refusal to ok blue collar jobs, yet these old ladies constantly with their families and friends contribute to Natchez , though some may consider it a small amount, by opening their homes, opera fest, literary fest, etc. They along with so many other Natchezians have never stopped trying to make Natchez better for everyone . But the trained workforce is not here unfortunately, which your better companies obviously look for. Whose fault is it that there isnt any more qualified people here, the companies?

Thank you Eric Stratton for coming to my defense. At least someone around here has a brain in their head. I love Natchez more than anybody---o.k., I have to admit, it's a love/ hate relationship. I love the beauty, history, and friendliness of the people who reside here. I hate the redneck/ ghetto/ ignorant mentallity of many who unfortunately call this place home. Is it enough to make me want to leave? Quite obviously no, since I have lived here permanently since 1992. Will I spend the rest of my life here?---Thats remaining to be seen.
You have to make sacrifices in order to live here.... Your salary will not be what it could be in a larger metropolitan area. There are limited opportunities in many aspects. There is a very small percentage of educated, professional type people.... MSLUGIRL: to question my loyalty to this community is once again another ridiculous accusation from your end. I have done more for this community than you could ever dream of and are capable of doing... Drop it with the insults, o.k.?

getalife, you are the most ridiculous, ignorant person on this blog. you have done more for this town yea right, like to see that. you have put this town down, but in the same sentence you say you love this town.mslugirl knows what she is saying, but not you. these companys are bring in workers and their familys and that is what she was referring to,these companys want hire people from here right off, they would rather have thier workers here working than to hire home town people. what makes me mad, is ignorant people like you who think they are right no matter what,so do all of natchez a favor move, cause we can do without the name calling on here. i'm one who is very proud of were i come from, and if being called a redneck is how you see me and many others then your list of friends should disown you or knowing you, you've shown you don't care for your southern roots. oh,and another who in GOD'S creation made you GOD,you act like you are so perfect, well i have braking knews for you and another blogger on here GOD is perfect surely not you or anyone else.

I think what GETALIFE is referring to dragonfly is the way you argue or debate. You throw out how ignorant everyone is who disagrees with you, when you can't even spell simple words and have trouble forming simple sentences. Now I'm not saying your arguments are'nt valid but it it would strengthen your position if you could spell words bigger than "braking knews". (Should be breaking news)
