What should Adams County do with the money from the Rentech land sale?
July 2, 2008
"Vidalia's got all this recreation going down by the riverwalk. It seems like all we've got is Duncan Park. We need more recreation; something for the kids to do."
Clay Owens, Offshore drilling, Natchez
"Recreation — number one priority. These kids around here need something to do. "
Marie Lofton, Mall manager, Natchez
"They need to fix the streets, number one. We should work on benefiting Natchez and advertise, advertise, advertise."
Carmen Raisner, Natchez Fine Framing, Natchez
"I don't think we have enough entertainment for kids. My grandkids come in from Monroe and they don't have anything to do. They could use more family entertainment."
Barbrer Boykin, Receptionist, Natchez

Why not use it for the hospital? Why borrow 3 million dollars when you have 3 million dollars? Or does the county like making the taxpyers pay interest? I am sure the bankers like it, but how about the taxpayers/

Spend it wisely. We, the people, don't want to hear the words...in the red...in the future...like no funds to fuel the city's vehilces...or...the hospital is in the red...again!

If you play golf or baseball Duncan park is a good place to be. But what about everyone else? I've always wondered why Natchez doesn't have a park? One that would incorporate wonderful gardens with maybe a zoo.Make it FAMILY oriented. It would be utilized by everyone, tourists included. It would mean jobs also.

Those are good thoughts- hospital, streets, recreation, but also invest that money and save some for a rainy day.
Maybe buy some Rentech stock with some of it. It's going to go up I think.

great...when the hospital sells they will have a lots of millions to play with. I know they should spend it on giving the kids something to do. Whatever that is. Since I was a teenager everyone has said there is nothing to do in Natchez! The riverwalk has turned into medical so maybe natchez could be the fun city. oh yea..fix our streets!

I certainly do not want to be negative and rain on anyone's parade today, but the past has proven one point. Something for the children's interest will always be destroyed by the ignorant low-life who thinks it should be their free baby sitters.... remember what happened to the public swimming pool at Duncan park?? That's just one simple example......Until someone has back bone enough to stand up to the low-life and put restrictions on them and enforce the rules concerning the destruction, the other kids will never have anything around here. JMO tho'.,

Most of the vandalism happens at night. Maybe more police to patrol at night?

Recreation for children....and a whole lot of security for the property and children

There are two reasons Natchez cannot draw the intrest of industry. They are the school system and recreation. Invest in our school system. No company is going to build here and ask it's employees to enroll their children in our public school system! They will look elsewhere for a town with better public schools to locate. Family recreation would help, but first and formost are the schools.

Something has to be done about the school system in Natchez. If you want to put your child in a private school, be ready to fork out $4,000 per year. Why 3 private schools and one public? I think the schools should be combined based on subdivisions. North Natchez, South Natchez, Natchez High (like it used to be).

Syoung, I've been preaching on that subject for a long time now. The parents have to get together and demand this take place. One man, (our illustrious?) PW, ex-mayor caused all this chaos. Why can't the majority of the parents get together and demand the system be reversed? The families that have had to cut down on their food supplies and whatever else, for their children to get the education they deserve, need to make a strong stand for this. One lady I know of that had to resort to sending her kids to private school, ran for mayor. Her platform?? To reverse the school system!!!! I voted for her because I knew in her heart she wanted the best for the kids. Naturally she lost. This woman was not wealthy. Her campaign was paid by public donations. In fact every time she had to use her car, she had to jump start it b/c she did not have the money for a new battery. She would not take the public's money even for a battery. At least she tried. Why can't we have public leaders this devoted to our children?????

Note to the new mayor -- my top 3 priorities
1--fix the streets
2--get moving on the sports complex issue
3--address the public school issue
What's the status of these?

The city may want to hold on to that money for a bit, at least until that million dollar lawsuit filed by that construction company gets settled.

give the money to the poor people of adams county who are struggling to survive.there is no jobs here.more people are on walfare and food stamps than ever, and your worried about recreation for the kids?get outa here.do the right thing, help the poor people of this county.what i mean by this is>give the money directly to the poor.put the money in there hands.they need it and deserve it.find it in your hearts to care about the poor in adams county.you sold land that belonged to the people of adams county.this money doesnt belong to county officals to squander.do something nice for a change, help the poor people of our county.but being the selfish repersentitives and officals of the county that you are,i know you wont do this act for god or anyone else.but the idea is a good one cause there is so many needy people in our county that cant make ends meat with inflateion and the ecconomy in shambbles in adams county!nevertheless im probley wasteing my time because adams county dont know how to do the right thing.ty

Wow. What a mind boggling topic!!! Hmmm!!!???
I would like to see Natchez become more attractive to investors and potential capital. That would mean developing something recreational for kids and families. After all, there is very little for the kids to do, besides becoming involved in some type of delinquent activity, staying at home, or simply riding around or standing on the corner. The concept of increased recreation with enhanced security would simply be a start. Also, if Natchez does not have one, it should hire a small staff of grantwriters for perhaps 2-3 years to see about pulling in some dollars to renovate old buildings for other uses. Alsol, those grant writers could compete compete for government funds to assist those persons requiring aid for whatever focus the grant will focus (Based on Supertrucker47's statement.) The precept would be that as more money is acquired from various agencies around the nation, i.e., government agencies, corporations, funding agencies, etc., that money would be used to enhance/build programs and to create jobs.
As far as the school system, it is in need of more intellectual capital vs. financial capital. I'm sure that many teachers and administrators are doing the best that they can, but the overall administration, the school board, may need revamping. Appropriate after school programs will be needed to help overall grades and mandated test scores to increase. I'm not even saying that current administrators will need to be removed or fired, but rather there may need to be an assessment conducted by an outside evaluation team to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the school administrative body.
The problem is that if somebody wants to do something positive, there is always somebody ready to tear it down. If a majority of people could come together and work diligently together, then even the smallest change will benefit Natchez.
Eventually, investors would become interested due to Natchez's rich history and a booming economy. Natchez could easily become one of the fastest growing retirement communities in the south, but it's gonna take some good leadership to do that.

TWO WEEKS IS MORE THAN LONG ENOUGH!

I think they should use it to hire a competitor for Walter Brown. That might save the city and county some legal fees.
Then, they could use some of it to hire two or three city employees to go back through the Democrat archives and look for prior statements of "leaders" that contradict later actions and rewrite those earlier statements in the interest of historical consistency and social harmony.

Red and Free, think this is bad? Peek at CHATS!!
Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on July 21, 2008 at 7:17 p.m.
I know destiny, I just kind of "ass u med" that the chats were only for the election. It would be nice to have one with Riveria about what he really meant to do in Natchez, or with some of the Rentech people, or maybe Sheriff Brown and Chief Mullins. Hmmmmmm?
Posted by Syoung (anonymous) on July 22, 2008 at 1:33 p.m.
I am confused. I keep seeing Mr. Owen's comment on the Rentech money. The Vidalia Riverwalk doesn't have any recreation for the kids. Hospitals, hotels, and doctor's offices?? What in the world can a child do down there besides jump in the river? There are no swings, no picnic area, no slides, no bbq area. Duncan park has a lot more than Vidalia Riverwalk. I think Vidalia needs recreation. Natchez has a nice place for children to play.
