The Natchez Democrat editorial seems to pose a new question and is somewhat evasive about its original premise. The purchase and safekeeping of the site by the people of Natchez, city or county, would protect the site and thus benefit all our citizens. When I attended the public meeting where the National Park Service unveiled their study at Natchez Council Chambers, the conditions were proven for the site to become part of the national park here. However, the public was advised to acquire the site and have it held by a local government, rather than, say the Forks of the Road group per se, so that any future plans for the site would be facilitated if and when the NPS moves forward. This was not a slam on the good hardworking Forks of the Road members, but a recognition that the local government is theoretically and perpetual entity, as opposed to a community based organization that may or may not remain viable forever. A representative from Tulane was also in attendance and there was discussion of the university partnering with the community and other groups to develop an interpretive center. There seems to be a lot of interest in the site and if the local government on all our behalf holds the deed, that would be a big step toward maintaining some local control and seeing to it that a responsible interpretation is made. I find it hard to understand why the Democrat would oppose local government acquisition and why the Democrat suddenly links doing nothing with somehow progressing toward the day when the Park Service takes real steps toward development.

If you looked at the last three years' profits under Mr. Sours you might think it would be a good career move to come here. But then, when you find out that two more casinos are coming in and the Isle will not only lose its monopoly here but perhaps all three casinos would close as the market to support three casinos isn't here (heck we don't have a big enough market yet for Target to justify a store here) you would realize you might go down with the boat. I don't blame the guy. It's a career ender.

Very excited to hear about new Italian restaurant. If the food is as good as it looks in the photo, and the ambience, as they say, is as pleasant as one imagines from the photo, we have a winner! Can't wait to try it! Good luck!

Shouldn't there be a federal charge on these guys since they kidnapped the woman by ordering her to drive with them in the car?

This is just the kind of thing that makes me wonder if our market can support more than one casino. The folks who come in here overestimating this market won't just take their own casinos down, they'll cause all of them to lose money and the gamble might cause us to lose them all. I hope the market can support more than one, for the thought of not having a "boat" here as a lure for tourists doesn't sound too good. However, I also worry that the cost to the lower income community here who may have a gambling illness is a cost most of the rest of us don't have to bear.

A reputation for good health care is also important in attracting retirees and new residents. Natchez Regional is part of the balance necessary for a growing and prosperous regional community.

Developing Forks of the Road is important to not only Natchez but to our country. Responsibly adding that piece of our story will add more respectability to the living history tourists can experience here. Many more tourists will visit when it is ready for them to see. It will be a similar experience to going to D.C. to the WWII memorial and the Holocaust museum, which are hugely popular. But, this story is best told in Natchez. Book sales in recent years demonstrate huge interest in this greatest American story ever told. This project is much higher priority than William Johnson House was in earlier years and the timing is right. Work hard with National Park Service now and they will get input nationally and handle it appropriately. It will take lots less than 15 years but only if we demonstrate our willingness to support NPS as it works toward this goal.

Noneya's right. And teens who want to rebel a bit by tasting the forbidden could end up dying in accidents because they are driving drunk down those scary two-lane roads. Better to preach temperance from the pulpit and let people choose than use government to restrict folks' private lives. If visiting hunters and fishermen realize they can't buy one beer, they'll buy cases when they come and drink way more than if they know there's one beer if they want to buy it there. A nice sit down restaurant by the lake would be nice and offer more economic incentive if people can enjoy some wine with their meal.

And a good time was had by all! What a wonderful heartwarming story. And the photo looks so appetizing. The "dart" is a great way to get reporters out there just recording the lives of folks. I hope Mr. Dee had a great birthday with a meal fit for a king!
