I am all about unconventional education and all (I homeschool 2 of my children), but I totally agree with the poster who said this family should wait until the kids are older! I think it would certainly be more meaningful to slightly older children. Also, at age 6 (Kindergarten or 1st grade), one should be focusing on the basics of reading and mathematics--which is difficult to do on a bicycle, I would think. And workbooks...don't get me started on workbooks!! To my Education professors, "workbook" was a dirty word!! (the very lowest form of education, according to my professors).

I hope that they are truly taking all safety precautions. I am also the mother of three girls 6, 4, and 2, and I barely make it around the block with them on bikes!

We switched to Dish Network several years ago, because Cable One had such bad service in Vidalia.

I laugh at the Cable One commercial where the guy with sattelite goes over to the other guy's house to watch the game because it is raining and Cable One gets so much better reception... That was not the case when we did have Cable One. Every time the wind blew, or a cloud passed, or it sprinkled, our picture would get very grainy or go out altogether for several hours. We were constantly calling Cable One and being told, "We don't have that problem in Natchez." Like it was our fault for living on this side of the river!

Our neighbors recently switched back to Cable One b/c they wanted TBS (which Dish does not carry here). They got the HD channels. I've been over there watching TV sometimes, and the lower "non-HD" channels are still extremely grainy.

Right now, I have a plan with Dish called the Family plan, and it is only $25 per month, including Monroe local stations. We've been very pleased with our Dish service....occasionally it will go out in a very heavy storm, but it always comes right back in a few minutes (as opposed to hours of no TV with Cable One!)

MsRedHead--Would you at least agree that if the fetus has a viable heartbeat it is human? The heart begins beating when a woman is considered to be 5 weeks pregnant--3 weeks after conception. Most women don't even know they are pregnant at this point. Yes, the fetus is still completely dependent on its mother, but so is the newborn! Regardless of when any person may say life begins, the truth is that an abortion will stop a heart from beating.

Iconoclast--Did you know that Jane Roe has since become a Pro-Lifer? She greatly regrets the part she played in getting abortion legalized. Check out this interview:

I do not live in Natchez, but, being a resident of Vidalia, I go to Natchez on an almost daily basis. My confidence in the Natchez Police Department is very low.

My first time dealing with NPD was when I was rear-ended in front of Natchez Regional. I was coming from Wal-Mart, and turning right toward the bridge. I was near the end of the turning lane, and had stopped to yield to oncoming traffic before merging. There is a yield sign at the end of that turn lane. A fellow bumped me from behind. We pulled over and called 911. When the officer arrived, both of our stories matched as to what happened. At first glance, there appeared to be no damage. The rookie officer looked at both of our drivers licenses and insurance. He said I could pick up a report after a certain time on a certain day. When my husband looked at my car, he noticed that the bumper, although not dented, had actually had been knocked in several inches. I went to NPD to retrieve the accident report, for which they charged me $5. It was practically blank. The officer had not even written any of our information except our names, and those names were apparently both misspelled. We were never able to file it with any insurance b/c of NPD's shoddy work.

My second time to deal with NPD was when our car was vandalized. We parked in the lot near the Post Office and Cock of the Walk, and were attending the Spring Pilgrimage Pageant and Confederate Ball. When we got back to our car, a very large rock had been thrown through our back glass. There was also a tour bus and another car or two that had glass broken. The Barney-Fife-looking officer who came had a little dollar store notebook that he took down everyone's information, but we never heard anything back from NPD.

Maybe what they really mean by saying "crime is down" is that "arrests are down." That's my opinion, anyway!

I know where the money for the PJ raise comes from-- My property taxes this year are over 6 times what they were last year! If PJ has 6x the amount of money they had last year, they've got to spend it on something, right? What better than to spend it on themselves? This will Insure that they will never roll back the millages as promised, b/c it would come out of their personal pay check!!!

Um, Vilou09, should children in Natchez really be travelling to school in Vidalia or Ferriday? I can somewhat understand going from Vidalia to Natchez for school, afterall, there are some good private schools in Natchez. But only public schools in Vidalia, and public schools have this technicality called a residence requirement.

Of course, many parents in this area of the country seem content to provide a wonderful example to their children of how to break the law...

I, too, decry the city of Vidalia as they begin putting up decorations in mid-October! I guess they don't want to climb the ladders when it's cool, because they then leave the decorations up until mid-February or early March. Never fails.

Most scholars agree that Christ's actual birthday is nowhere near Dec. 25. But I am glad that we do have this time to celebrate Christ's birth, even though we don't know the actual day. I hate that the commercialization of Christmas has led to the hustle-bustle that makes it almost impossible to feel peaceful.

In my own home, we have a few traditions with my children to try to bring the holiday into focus. One tradition is our special Advent Calendar. We add a figure from the Nativity story each day, Dec 1-25, and tell what makes that figure important to the Christmas story.

On Christmas may not come on Dec. 25

Okay, I've been reading all the comments here, and I'd like to add a few of my own.

First of all, I will state that I don't consider myself racist. I happen to be a white female who tries to vote values over race or party.

I did vote for McCain in this election, not because I was crazy about him personally, but because his views are closer to my own than Obama's. The person I voted for in the primary was actually a black Republican preacher and statesman, Alan Keyes, and I would have been simply THRILLED had he won. Not race, but values.

Neither do I vote for a person because of gender. The 1st time Bobby Jindal ran for governor I proudly voted for him and against Blanco, even though she is a female. I would not have been happy to have Hilary for the 1st woman President, but I would have been very happy to see Sarah Palin as the 1st woman VP. Again, for me, it goes back to values.

To me, it is more important that a nominee share my values than share my race, gender, or party. I would certainly hope that a large majority of the 52% did their homework before pushing the button for the President-elect.

The good that has come to me personally from the election, even though I'm not terribly happy with the result, is that I have begun praying for Obama. I hope that the Lord will soften his heart in many areas, and that the Lord will help our country stay strong and get better instead of worse.
