There will never be industry here. Look at Vicksburg, it is losing most of its industry except for LeTournneau and the Corp of Engineers. Greg is right only he wasn't harsh enough. Another thing that has happened recently is that every white pastor of a major Natchez church has moved away/been replaced in the past 6 or so years. WHY? The climate for the future stymied by the climate of the past!!!

Two comments: FIrst-long after we could smell the fire, two big fire engines passed my house on south Union, don't know why they were way down there? Second, as to police help. Well into the second fire, I saw two civilians directing traffic on Market Street near the court house, don't know why right next to the court house, that a couple of police cars couldn't have been used to help direct traffic?

How many of you complaining actually have debris in your yard and can afford to pay to haul it away?

It was explained last night that at the time of filing for bankruptsy, Fordice and others will be paid in full. The bankruptsy Chapter 9 process is designed to attract buyers and when one agrees, proceeds of the sale will pay off Fordice and others. They hope to attract not-for-profit buyers with deep pockets and deep ethical standards. The resturant will be local not a chain. It will have a big opening (a week or two) then nobody will go there and it will close. Same for the strip stores.
But hey, thank goodness for Office Depot. That is one bright spot on the bypass horizon.

Julie,
Are you aware the main reason the scores went up at Natchez High is that the test is not required, so only those who CHOSE to take it were counted?!! In other words, many, if not most of the students, did not take the test. Thus, the educational level of all students is not reflected in the smaller number, who actually took the test and their scores. That means the overall level of all students at Natchez High is not measured by the test, nor is it improving. The number (and percent) of students at other schools taking the test is likely much higher than at Natchez High. Researching the true numbers might give you a totally different conclusion to your article.

Isn't it curious that neither the article nor any early comments mentioned churches that do destination weddings, and ministers who are often called on to officiate. Too bad that most weddings are all about visuals and not about substance!

As to the theme park in Birmingham, it nearly went under and almost took the city of Bham with it. It wasn't until an outside owner took over that it worked. For the first three years, all the delinquents in the county went there. Regular folks were afraid to go. So be careful what you wish for here!!!

I have a bicycle, but find it dangerous to use in Natchez, to same nothing of the cobblestone streets, we have here. And for all you Vidalia enthusiasts, yesterday I saw someone riding a bike in the inside lane right down the highway in Vidalia!! Talk about dangerous!
As for contempuous northerns, why do you stay here? Enlighten the rest of us? Perhaps its because we don't use that very expensive heating fuel in winter.
