Betty Stiles is one of the most honorable and trustworthy persons in Natchez. I hope she enjoys her retirement. And to all of you that are making comments on this forum, all the article says is that it is common for an audit after a clerk leaves; so I am sure there have been audits before and all was okay. Betty, I want to THANK YOU for the fine job you did, and if anyone deserves a happy retirement it is you.Take care.

I think they need to put some $$ in their budget to pay for all the lawsuits they are going to face because of the "water" fiasco!

When you travel to these conventions you usually stay in a hotel that has arranged special pricing for those with the convention; that being said these prices are in line with most conference trips from all over the US. The auditor needs to make sure no alcohol, extra food (guests not at the conference, such as spouses, children, etc.) or extra expenses for others or themselves was paid for by the city/county/state/federal government; that must be paid for by the individual and accounted for also.

On Recent trips cost county $6,800

Angels on this earth come in many shapes and sizes, and we have truly witnessed how God can use someone to be an angel here on this earth without them even knowing they are one. Thank you for saving this child's life, there is a special place in heaven for heroes like you.

The deep fat fryers should have been taken out of the schools many years ago, more fresh fruits and veggies should be offered, and only use the ovens: there are recipes for "oven baked chicken , oven fried chicken, baked chicken tenders, baked fish, etc. (even french fries can be baked) it can be done and is being done all over the USA. What needs to happen is the fryers need to be taken out (and sold at auction to bring in some $$), ovens should be repaired so they can be used correctly, and the child nutrition workers should have training to show and teach them how to cook healthier. There are a lot of rules and regulations (USDA) that effect a child nutrition program, and the hardest part is to meet the amount of calories that are needed daily without doing it the "old way" by adding fat and sugar. A full belly (of nutritious food) does yield a healthy mind and a healthy body. I was in Child Nutrition for over 20 years (I am from Natchez and now I am in Texas) and there are many pieces to the puzzle that have to match together to make a successful school districts' child nutrition organization, and it begins with the willingness of the "heads" of the organization to be open to change. Natchez could be in the pilot program for "Universal Feed", that means every child in the district gets to eat breakfast and lunch free, and a daily snack is given in the afternoon to the elementary students free. There are other programs that are available that gives a student (all students are offered so as not to embarrass or overtly identify them) on a Friday afternoon, a "backpack" that has fruits and fresh veggie sticks along with sandwiches or prepared non-perishable foods that will feed the student for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the weekend and the "backpack" is brought back to school on a Monday morning so it can be prepared on the next Friday for the student; but it does take someone that cares and is willing to work to organize these programs. "The $$ is not always great and the work is tiring, but the satisfaction and gratification that you recieve from helping a child is the greatest gift and a fantastic feeling of accomplishment"

Mix chlorine bleach and iodine, are they absolutely out of their mind? Chlorine bleach is corrosive, and who knows what parts per gallon to use; only a chemist would be able to make a decision like that, I am appalled to even think about how ignorant the suggestion is.

And they want you to continue to pay the bill for contaminated water. The health department needs to condemn the water, if anyone becomes sick from this water they have a personal lawsuit against the mayor, council, head of the health department and a civil suit against the city entity. I own 2 homes in Vidalia that receive Ferriday water and I have had it disconnected, they continue to send me a bill but I will not pay it due to the fact the water is not "drinkable" nor useable. Remember the "Erin Brockovich" case, this could turn into the same thing.

to generoberts: I remember Mr. Porter and Coach Wade, I agree with you; everyone respected them and NO ONE dared to talk back to them, it was out of respect not fear that everyone loved them. You knew they did not tolerate any disrespect, and the parents stood behind them. When they called a parent to let the parent know the student had received "swats", the student knew when they got home it would be the same. There was discipline and it was fairly administered to all. I agree Natchez schools need stronger people to run them, schools and town included.
