Good for you jammin1. Your daddy sounds like a very grounded and sensible man. He obviously gave you the tools (wisdom and attitude) to survive in the world. I am continually inspired by people such as your daddy--people who scrimped and saved to help themselves and their families. I was most inspired by the lady who washed clothes for a living and saved over $250,000 that she left to USM when she died. What a woman! Or, a couple I know who never finished grade school and worked less than minimum wage jobs to put six kids through college to become teachers and doctors. That IS inspiration. Like your daddy said, "You don't work, you don't eat." I always felt like it was our responsibility to help those in need, but today so many refuse to help themselves. All I can say is, keep on spreading your Daddy's wisdom. :-)

mojo: First, I believe Governor Adlai Stevenson was a liberal Democrat, wasn’t he? So, of course, he would likely subscribe to the idealistic philosophies of Saul Alinsky. Second, while you might interpret Jesus and Alinsky as sharing the same philosophy of “brotherhood, tolerance, charity and dignity of the individual,” for me, that is where any similarity between the two men ends. Jesus would never justify the use of criminal activity—break the Ten Commandments--to enforce his personal agenda. ACORN, as a community organization whose original intent was to help the needy, has long since morphed into a mob-like organization that wields its own form of “justice for all” and propaganda in order to attain political power. (See http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/con... http://spectator.org/archives/2009/09/28... More OBAMACORN News: White House Moves to Shutdown Disclosure of Big Labor-ACORN Ties « Frugal Café Blog Zone; http://www.acorninternational.org/) Since I was brought up by my parents, and taught in Sunday School and church, to be charitable to the underprivileged, I don’t need an alleged non-profit community organization utilizing MY hard-earned tax payments to subsidize its political agenda and call it “helping the needy.” I contribute regularly to all kinds of LEGIT charities, such as Salvation Army, Good Will, Habitat for Humanity, etc., who have not become a den of criminal activity in their quest to help people in need.
And mojo, you don’t have to preach to me the history of the civil rights era since I experienced it first hand, including car bombings, KKK marching down the streets of downtown Natchez, cross-burnings in front of Black churches, martial law and the National Guard combing the streets of Natchez, and student riots on the campus of Natchez-Adams High School, to say the least. The inhumane treatment of Blacks (and native Americans) by White men is the most insidious moment in our nation’s history. Black History Month every year is a constant reminder to all of us, as it should be. However, your attempt to use guilt to justify ACORN’s criminal activity just doesn’t wash with me. Since more than 40 years has past since the Civil Rights Act was passed, you would think that LEGIT non-profit organizations would not need to resort to the lowest common denominator of our society to help the disenfranchised help themselves.

Mrmojorism: You asked: “Do any of ya'll actually know who and what ACORN is? What they do?” (See http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/lo...,
http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/4767..., http://www.bbvforums.org/forums/messages...,
http://www.americanthinker.com/2009/09/a..., and http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/art....) Any altruistic services ACORN (now known as COI) provided in the beginning has been overshadowed by its decision to become a corrupt and fraudulent political strong arm for Alinsky-leftists Democrats who have no compunction about using taxpayers monies to promote their liberal political agenda. I don’t subscribe to ACORN's Alinsky philosophy that THE END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS, particularly its criminal activity, AND I certainly don’t want MY hard-earned income tax payments being provided to the now fraudulent NON-PROFIT organization that promotes it.

2great4myself obviously IS too great for yourself. In fact, you are SO-O-O great, you must have drunk the kool-aid dished out by your Messiah who also has a big narcissistic ego. ACORN, now known as COI, began as a legit community organization in Arkansas that helped poor families and single mothers. However, ACORN has now become known as a corrupt and fraudulent political arm of the Alinsky-leftists Democrats that will use WHATEVER means to promote its agenda, including voter fraud, embezzlement, and thuggery. (See http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/lo...,
http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/4767..., http://www.bbvforums.org/forums/messages...,
http://www.americanthinker.com/2009/09/a..., and http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/art....) ALL Americans—not just Republicans—should be concerned about ACORN. ACORN is promoting and carrying out CRIMINAL ACTIVITY using American taxpayer monies to do so. The fact that YOU, 2great4myself, can ridicule someone who shows concern about possible ACORN activity in the Mississippi electoral process proves that YOU, 2great4myself, must actively support and condone the criminal activity of ACORN. (BTW—I used to be a Democrat who voted TWICE for Bill Clinton, but am now an INDEPENDENT.)
yesindeed1980—You are sadly mistaken if you believe ACORN’s criminal activities are only occurring in the States of Washington, Nevada, Maryland, Texas, Illinois, etc. Or, maybe you and 2great4 myself both drank the kool-aid and can see nothing wrong with ACORN’s criminal activity in your backyard. Either way makes me realize how much trouble our country really is in with ignorant yahoos like you two walking the streets.

Although not mentioned in the article, I would be interested to know if Connie Hollins was a member of ACORN.

I don't know about the other candidates, but if I were back home, I'd be voting for RAY BROWN. Ray was a shy, but funny, high school football player who took his responsibilities very seriously. He has a strong work ethic that will help him succeed at everything he does. Ray has become a very mature and responsible young man who would apply those same strengths to being Sheriff of Adams County. Good luck, Ray.

Let me correct my previous post to reflect my good education. "He established and expected high standards in his teachers and students, and obtained excellent results."

During Mr. McLaurin's tenure as Superintendent of the Adams County school system, Adams County offered the BEST education in the State of Mississippi. I attribute that to Mr. McLaurin and his co-educators on the School Board. He established and expected high standards in his teachers and students, and obtained excellence results. Thank you, Mr. McLaurin for your dedication to education and to those students, like myself, who were lucky enough to obtain a good education because of it.

In addition to being a skilled doctor, Dr. Veller was the kindest and gentlest lady with her patients. Her extraordinary legacy will be the thousands of babies she delivered who are now adults and parents themselves. May she rest in peace for doing such a good life's work. Thank you, Dr. Veller.

Congratulations, Ray! Know that you have friends from afar pulling for you.
thetinman: Mr Brown, not from his campaign flier or from his website does he mention about GOD. MY COMMENT: Ray Brown embodies all and more that God expects in his followers. Ray is kind, considerate, responsible, empathetic, and will always offer a helping hand to his neighbor. ACTIONS speak louder than the WRITTEN WORD on a political poster.
Countryboy14u: Here we go again lets vote the blacks into office. MY COMMENT: As sheriff, Ray Brown will represent ALL RACES no matter who voted for him. If Natchez voters are smart enough to elect Ray as sheriff, they will be lucky to get someone who sees PEOPLE and not their skin color, unlike some of the voters.
On Brown assured runoff; battle between Mayfield, Freeman
