In 1871, during the Reconstruction era, Natchez elected Robert H. Wood as mayor. Natchez was the only city in Mississippi to elect an African-American to the mayor's office during that period.

Good for the NAACP & all awarded, but can't the Democrat do any fact-checking? WEST WAS NOT THE FIRST BLACK MAYOR. It was reported in their own paper that Natchez had a black mayor during Reconstruction just after the Civil War. The State Conference President is probably an out-of-towner who didn't know, but someone should have caught that.

I agree Jbird. I am appalled at most of the comments. Don't any of you realize that this teacher is a perfect candidate for an American citizen? She's doing everything right and legally. This is not an illegal immigrant taking advantage of us. Her supervisor wants her to stay, so she must be doing a great job. Special Ed teachers are hard to come by, especailly good ones. As far as taxes go, if she is working legally and with her visa for the school board, she probably IS having taxes withdrawn. Wow, what a great display "southern hospitality" and intelligence in the comments. Remember, she is NOT an ILLEGAL. Most of us are from immigrant families if we go back far enough.

The mayor's quote makes it sound like the current planner is being fired because of his age or family obligations --they want somebody younger, and single. That's illegal.

Gary I fear to tell you that the $300,000 cut did happen. there just not telling us. They lied to the press. I know from several BOA that there cutting staff in the amount of $300,000. 4 deparment heads and 3 staff. City Planner will be replaced with a secretary. No grants. This place is a mess.

Thanks, Curtis, for telling us that part of the story " spoke to Erika Felter at the scene on Sunday as they looked at the beheaded deer in the ditch." who else knew the deer was there? Perhaps the officer wasn't a bad shot afterall and just wanted to come back and get his "trophy."
Democrat, Please follow up on this story.

If what's reported is correct, the officer should loose his job -period. Perhaps in addition to all of his bad judgement in this case, he can't shoot. He probably thought those were fatal shots and as a law officer who carries a weapon and is trained, he darn well should know how to kill a deer with one shot. Felter should have never been arrested, poor judgement adn incompetence. The guy should be fired. I don't want my tax money paying someone like him.

Could have been released at a refuge.

One of Natchez's best. There are not many placed on this earth like him. He will be missed by many here, but is receiving his reward now in heaven. God bless you, Kirk.
