Great story! And what an honor for Natchez to have the highest average statewide on this test! Congratulations, Mr. Stewman and your class! Keep up the good work!

The shame of it is that the public schools must share the federal dollars provided by NCLB with the private schools, but only the public schools have any accountability for it! Without testing, I'm not sure that every private school is providing "higher learning equivalences" (whatever that is:).

You are so right, jerrip! Parents have to be the monitors of their children's education, have to hold teachers and schools accountable, and MUST be a partner in educating their children!!

Are they teaching kids how to live on a budget, how to balance a checkbook, promote higher education, promote trade schools, (why aren't their any around here?) not everyone is college material."

Many things that used to be taught at home are now the responsibility of our already overloaded school system! My parents taught me how to balance a checkbook and live on a budget! There is a course in Personal Finance offered at the HS, but few take it. As for "trade schools" there are two very fine ones in our area: Fallin Career and Technology Center for high school students and CoLin Vocational Center for adults!

Thanks for your encouragement, foghorn! In the next week schools all over our area will be welcoming students. Are you going to be there? It might have been a stupid gimmick, but perhaps it was a lesson they needed to hear. Our teachers need all the support we can give them. As you have demonstrated, it is sometimes a thankless job. Personally, I am thankful for those who choose to devote themselves to helping our children.

Well said, Julie. I would also add to your "heroes" list those in the military who have been killed during the past two weeks while some have been obsessed with MJ.

There are around 4,000 children in the school district. But, remember when comparing the public to the private schools, that public schools have to take everyone who comes along. They do not get to choose which students they will take and which they won't. They also don't have the liberty to ask parents to take their children elsewhere when they don't perform up to par.

Congratulations, Dr. Barnett! And, well done, BOS, an EXCELLENT choice! Dr. Barnett will not only bring some school experience to the Board but also a fair mind with knowledge about what is being presented!

Of course, we should elect our school board! Just look how well that's worked out for the BOS, BOA and other county and city officials!
