The Democrat's category includes the following newspapers:
The Vicksburg Post
The Commercial Dispatch (Columbus)
The Meridian Star
The Daily Mississippian (Ole Miss)
The Enterprise-Journal (McComb)
Delta Democrat Times (Greenville)
In the FOI and the Web site categories the newspaper competes against all dailies in the state ... including The Clarion-Ledger and The Sun Herald.
Thanks

The 3,393 troops lost was just in one day — D-day.
The numbers are from the National WWII Museum.
Hope that's what you were looking for.
Thanks

All,
I'd like to clear up the comments about the sentence that was omitted from Byrne's letter.
I did cut it for two reasons. First, because of deadline constraints Saturday I wasn't able to confirm the statement. I also deleted a statement about Ball in Bartley's letter Thursday for the same reason.
Second, Byrne's letter was more than 500 words long. Our policy states that letters should be less than 500. Combined with a long Top of the Morning by Mr. Schoby, there wasn't any wiggle room. Something had to be cut for space, and the sentence without confirmation was obviously the first place to cut. The statement in question seemed like a logical cut because it did not directly relate or connect to the rest of the letter and its omission wouldn't harm the meaning of the rest of the letter.
As our policy states, we reserve the right to edit for space.
No ill will was meant to any of the parties.
Thanks

You are right. We've changed the story, thanks for pointing this out.
Hunter is listed with no bond at VPD currently. The CPSO is reporting differently. Inmates are often transferred from VPD to CPSO where a bond can be set.
Thanks

Natchez High does have a school paper.
I actually met their advisor on Thursday at a journalism workshop at Co-Lin. She and three students attended a session I led. We talked for a bit that day about their paper, and specifically about how they would cover the powerlifting story.
They seemed like a very sharp crowd.
We've gone out there in the past trying to recruit sports writers and not had a lot of luck. I think, in the fall at least, they only had one male on staff ... and no sports-minded females, I guess.
But if anyone knows of an NHS student who would like to do some work for us, please let me know.
That is a great idea. We do have a Vidalia High School students who writes often for us and has done great work in the sports department.
Thanks

All,
Ntz143 has a good point about the district teacher of the year.
Since you all don't always know what we've got planned for upcoming issues of the newspaper, I wanted to share a little.
We have have a story already planned that focuses just on Amy Smith and the other winners. We think the honor is far too great to be buried in a school board meeting story, so we typically handle it by visiting each school, talking with the winners and taking photos of each. The story will be a front page centerpiece next week.
And in response to the point about the security at NHS, I believe Dr. Wayne Barnett was referring to the layout of NHS — the fact that nearly all the doors open to the outside.
The district has said numerous times that this is a major problem, and we've reported that. In fact, I wrote a whole story on the district's buildings in December that questioned why they had not been renovated and pointed out the security problem at NHS.
In this case, I didn't view his comment as any new news. Often, when meetings last several hours, we can't include everything said. Nor do I think that you all want to read a catalog list of every comment made. It can be long! :)
Thanks for your comments.

All,
Thanks for the ideas on the Humane Society.
We've done such stories in the past, and I'm sure we'll do more in the future. We've also talked with the folks at the shelter about getting a weekly spotlight going.
There is plenty of space in the newspaper for your ideas and the story I'm planning on look-a-like pets.
My story is part of our upcoming Profile edition, which has a theme and 40-or-so stories that match it. Profile is a magazine that comes out on the last Sunday of February.
The Humane Society features would be better placed in the daily paper.
So, keep thinking about folks you know who look like their pets. I have two submissions so far, but am looking for a few more.
Thanks
Julie

James and Kernel,
Which weeks of courthouse records are you referring to?
I've checked the last two weeks and they were published. And I'm not aware that we missed a week anytime before that either.
Thanks
Julie
