Thank you, Mr. Tucker, not only for your service to our nation, but for your service in fighting to free those under the hold of a ruthless dictator. The world is in debt to you and the millions like you who fought to bring freedom back to an oppressed Europe, and to prevent the evil of fascism from spreading further.

Congratulations on being awarded this high honor. May God bless you and your family.

"Once refurbished, the homes will be put on the market at an average price of $150,000.

Mathis said the benefit is the homes will be returned to the tax rolls and will be available to low-income residents."

I was intrigued by this part at the end. How is it going to be possible for low-income residents to buy (and keep) a $150,000 house? One of the problems that kicked off the current economic mess was the mortgage crisis, in which people who had purchased homes they really couldn't afford were losing them. Maybe there will be another bailout / stimulus package to pay people's mortgages if they get overextended. Big brother is not coming, he is here.

On Block advances in state playoffs

I know that Julie wants to get a good crowd out to support NHS, and I sure support that. You hear way too much negativism about Natchez schools and this is a great bright spot. However, another area team is playing Friday night as well. The Block Bears of Jonesville won their first-round playoff game last Friday night and they travel to Ruston to take on Cedar Creek. If you're a Bear fan, take that trip to Ruston to cheer on the Bears. Coach Vault has rejuvenated a team that had a couple of hard years and that spirit has spread throughout the school.

Good luck to both teams as they play on!

On They have built it, will you come?

I was sorry to hear about Mr. Dick passing away. He was a fine man, and I will miss getting to visit with him at our veteran's get-togethers. He and so many like him are why we are a free nation today. Our prayers are with you and your family.

It's true that the parents have already bought supplies, etc, but it's also true that the parents knew where their kids were supposed to be attending in the first place, so it was their considered choice to send them to the wrong school. This is not a new rule or requirement. As long as I can remember if you lived in a certain area you attended a certain school. Of course, once lawsuits and forced bussing sent kids from one neighborhood to a school other than the one in their neighborhood, that changed a bit, but students were still supposed to attend a certain school. These are not cases of avoiding bussing, but of wanting to attend another school other than the one where they live. This federal desegregation order has been in place for a long time, so it's not new news. It's pretty clear-cut, but I guess the renewed emphasis on enforcement of the rules is what is considered to be news. I am a parent and a teacher so I totally understand wanting your children to get the best education possible. When I moved back to this area I made sure I bought property in the school district where I wanted my children to attend school. I would suggest that parental interest and involvement would go a long way toward helping make improvements in all our local schools.

And as far as droppping out and selling drugs, I doubt very many kids, if any, do that because they are required to attend one school over another. They are not being stopped from going to school, they are just being told to go to the one in their district.

grrbrts: The Red Cross can give you information on shelters and when they will open. Parkway Baptist is one, and the Vidalia Convention Center is another.. Not sure what you mean by a "permanent shelter", though.
