That will not fill our $750 million budget whole in fy10 with another $500 million to come in fy11.

On Is Gov. Haley Barbour’s plan to consolidate several public universities a good one?

The Coaches at MS State and Ole Miss make roughly the same in State money as the other Coaches in the State. The difference is the amount they are paid from their foundations. This is money raised by athletic donors. As far as merging those schools, these schools have record enrollment. It is best to let the healthy survive.

They are not being asked to cut, they are ALL being told they are being cut. Mergers should help take care of those redundant positions you speak of in your post. Alcorn can still produce educated citizens, but their degree would say JSU. The people that have insight at the Institutions of Higher Learning think that this is the best way to do it. How would combining them cause headaches or frustrations? The only real difference they would see would be the name, unless they worry about where their university buys its supplies.

2008-How does this show he is more concerned with his political future? These are difficult decisions that are not popular. I am just glad we have a Governor with the political courage to put policy over politics and a Governor who is not scared to do what is RIGHT forsaking what is popular.

Damon 76-MS College is a private school. They are not part of the equation.

Sideline-Why would you merge the Universities that are growing with record enrollments??? These are schools that people want to attend in record numbers.

All Universities as well as State Agencies are taking a 12% cut. The reason you don't try to redistribute wealth (communism) is because the 3 Universities you mentioned are growing.

Proudteacher-Please give me an example of the small colleges and universities that should be merged instead of the ones listed? Darylwalker-What is wrong with removing state workers from the personell board? Because of personell board protection, it took the Dept. of Corrections 6 months to fire an employee that hadn't been to workin 3 months, it's crazy. The State of MS is NOT an employment agency.

Chuckydaone-Tell me how the Governor's proposal limits anyone's access to education?? Take a look at a map with the Universities on there and explain how this limits ANYTHING. Valley is right next to Delta State and the W is right next to MSU. We have 17 or so Community Colleges that we cannot afford. We need serious consolidation there too.

Apparently some people cannot grasp the magnatude of the financial problems that are sweeping our State and Nation. There is a $750 million hole in the budget. Next year, that hole will have an additional $550 million or so. Mississippi cannot afford 8 Universities. If it were up to me, we'd close 2 of them completely. MS Valley State and MS University for Women are dying right before our eyes. Enrollment is decreasing EVERY year, at what point do you pull the plug?

It would have been nice if there had been one panelist there that isn't politically left of Obama. Also, not sure if Ms Edwards reported incorrectly or Sen. Hohrn mispoke, but the Governor's proposal DOES NOT call for the closure of all the State's mental health facilities. It calls for the closure of crisis centers.
