The right thing to do would be to ask EACH public university to cut their budgets by a certain % WITHOUT raising tuition. That way the institutions can get rid of all their redundant positions and high paying salaries for people who don't do SQUAT. Alcorn is poorly run, but creates some great citizens who are VERY well educated. Whoever has oversite on Institutions of Higher Learning should have some insight in to how these schools can cut costs. Combining them will only cause more headache and frustrations for those trying to further their educations. I wonder if combining the schools would cause any type of recourse from the Ayre's Case? Not sure of the details about the Ayre's case....

NO that is not the case. If your read the article you will see the state just completed year 1 of testing with the MCT2, which is harder than MCT taken previously. Of course, our district, along with others, never came up to par on the original MCT. So to make the test HARDER actually made no sense. Why not give districts the chance to meet the standards you originally set before upping the bar? I dont believe in lowering the bar by any means, but giving districts realistic goals that CAN be achieved would be a great boost for the entire state!

I remember several years ago when Frank Melton spoke at NHS graduation ceremony. He told the boys to pull up their pants, get the earrings out of their ears, and told the parents to take responsibility for their children. It was really good.

I wonder if the mobile units over at the high school are in the same zoning requirements?

Reader- the headache and frustrations I was referring to were those going to be had by the STUDENTS after such a merger. Like I said, Alcorn on the business end was enough to make you WANT to quit going, but I wanted that degree so I got it! I just can't see it being as quick to be a help-all to our current situation
On Barbour budget has education mergers
